Rockstar discusses the past, present and future of GTA Online

Rockstars slogan should be

”We used to be a great company focusing on single player. Now, we are money hungry cock suckers who shift ALL our focus onto online”. You know, when I was growing up, I dreamt of working at Rockstar as a programmer or a game designer. Now I don’t. They went from awesome to sh*tty. (Yes I know they made RDR 2 an amazing game. That’s true but what is it now exactly? I don’t see no expansion for single player, all I see is focus on the online.) Noway in hell would I work at company like that.

When was that interview conducted? I kinda hope it was already past last Halloween and guy is referring to next year's one.

It seems like they rely on player data more than player feedback. Their spreadsheets don't really indicate if people are ENJOYING the content though, just that they're playing it.

I think its funny they consider the Diamond Casino a "major topographical change" They just slapped a fancy shell on top of the existing casino that was there.

- Halloween should be really fun this year.

- Gives us crappy new Survival modes with incredibly tiny play areas, most maps with little to no cover or hiding spots, and we don't even ge to fight the aliens, we play as the aliens and are restricted to 3 weapons.

Really, how cool would it of been if Rockstar created a new interior and our players had to survive against swarms of aliens after being abducted and beamed into one of the alien ships.      That would of been fly as hell.     Instead we got Rockstars version.

I have a feeling they are going to release GTAV again... for next gen consoles. I hope not, as its been 6 years now and it will be 7 when next gen arrives. Its time for a new game, regardless of player count. As a day 1 player I dont know what else this game offers. Tired of this map.

I highly doubt it

The game was released as PS3, Xbox 360 games in 2013, then a year later for PS4 and Xbox one which at the time was the "next generation consoles" so to speak and then a year down the line PC was finally released after a two year wait from the PS3 / Xbox 360 released.

As you mentioned it's 6 years old and will be 7 next year, I seriously have my doubts to them releasing a 7+ year old game on a new platform when their better off spending their time developing for a new title or series using the latest emerging technology. The most you could hope for is some sort of emulation  but outside of minor technical upgrades, it's pretty much going to run like it would on the PS4 / XB1.

besides as I mentioned small technical upgrades, what would bringing a 6 year old title built on very old code and an old engine version add that we don't already have?

Nah there's no way this game is getting upgraded again. They'd only he delaying GTA 6 further, and I think less and less people play this game between updates

I'm barely playing even when it does update - really bored of the same old approach to new content.

Shame that the Dynasty taxi took so long to drop. I can't be bothered firing up the game these days, especially as the novelty of new vehicles wears off in a matter of minutes

This, this is perfect.

I dont Race, at all, ever so new vehicles are only fun for a few minutes. I log in, check the bonuses, I might buy something and then I am bored because it's the same old sh*t we have done thousands of times. I hope that the rumour of a new Lobby with weaponised vehicles removed is true because it would breathe new life into the game if people were actually driving around again.

I spend so much time inside an armoured vehicle or invisible in my Akula that I might as well not the playing the game but thats the only way you can play it today.

I'm out of the loop on this, when did this rumour start?

Seems interesting to say the least but I think the only reason that it's come to this is probably because the game is heavily polluted with the weaponized vehicles in the first place.

I guess if this is true that'll mean no running businesses or anything???  Because that would make it so much easier and I doubt this is something Rockstar is going to let happen if we get weaponized-vehicle free sessions. I'm thinking basic weaponized vehicles may still be allowed to be used , I.E Rhino Tank, buzzard, Hydra (any weaponized aircraft / vehicle that was in the game at launch as their not really OP).

I would hate to have my Nightshark for instance locked in my garage in one of these sessions with the message "This vehicle can not be taken outside in this session". I at least hope you can still bring them out at but you can't use the weapons on it. Some of my best vehicles are weaponized ones due to handling, sped and armour, I do have regular cars but my weaponized collection beats them.

I will admit I may have embellished it slightly in my rant but I think @Fun 2 or one of the other leakers found reference to a new Lobby type in the last update. Theories have flown around with the mist popular being a "Role Play" style Lobby like what RDO has become because it's been incredibly popular.

I could go for that but it still makes ninety-five percent of the vehicles useless. Everyone will still be driving around in Armoured Cars and MkII's because they are convenient. I would want all militarised crap removed from the Lobbies entirely, unarmed helicopters and planes are fine.

What silly reasoning they've got for player habits. Of course content is popular when it's in the game, because it's something to do - the point of playing a game. It doesn't mean that it's what people want, or that other (non-existent) content is not, they're just looking for more gameplay in the game they paid money for. When you make the arena and fill it with tools, you can't make unbiased observations when players are using the tools in the arena and not the tools you didn't add to the other arena you didn't make! That's madness.

My thoughts exactly.  lol  I mean wtf?

To me, it's always seemed like Rockstar is more keen on doing what they want than what players want, which is backwards. They make content that sometimes is enjoyed by the community at large, and other times they're wasting everybody's time on things that either nobody is interested in, or things that are so half-hearted that many people who would've liked it can't even enjoy it right.

I always imagine the developers testing these new modes, particularly the adversary modes, as a group together using a LAN. And because they all know each other, and will respect the spirit of what they are trying to accomplish, their games and modes of play will work, and be jolly good fun. It's as if they then imagine that players will play together online in groups of friends and play the same way that they do.

The reality of course is that most players are in isolation, and most play with randoms. Therefore their game modes don't take this into account, nor the hostile, petty and vindictive nature of gamers who take great delight in being arseholes.

R*'s logic is ass backwards. They don't design updates to be fun or add to the player experience. Dont ever think that R* has turned over a new leaf with RDO. All the player friendly improvements we have seen are just hastily applied gauze to stop the game haemorrhaging players.

I have been playing GTAO the last few days and looked at it without the rose-coloured glasses and I can see multiple ways they have designed the game to purposefully f*ck over the players. There is no reason why its designed like this. Look at the Biker Delivery missions, why and how does my stock magically get transported to the docks in LS from the Desert? Why if you can transport it across the map does it need to be delivered? Its so that a large group of players riding across the map attracts attention or someone might stumble across the boats before you get there and destroy them. Why are the Buzzard helicopters park DIRECTLY NEXT TO explosive fuel tanks at the airfield? So people can easily destroy them. Why does the Trash Trucks and Post Op Deliveries even exist? So you are a slow and easily killable target.

They start out with a single goal, for them to sell Shark Cards. They then design the update around that.

This is something I noticed years ago: they seem to respond less (if at all) to direct feedback like e-mails and the like, and more to in-game metrics, like what gets used the most, what sells more, etc.

And the problem with that is that ...how do you gauge demand for something that doesn't exist?

This is the issue with 'vote with your wallet' as an argument in general, but GTAO is a perfect case study as to why 'vote with your wallet' is ...bullsh*t, basically. If they put out update after update where all the cars are high-end luxury cars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani, etc.), and I really want to putter around in a Honda Civic, I have two options: buy hypercars (and drive up the demand for hypercars), or ....don't buy hypercars, which means what exactly? If enough players do the same, then all they'll be able to take away from that is 'hypercars aren't as popular', but I can't vote in favour of 'affordable '90s runabouts' if there isn't one in the game to buy already, in order to drive up demand with sales.

I.e., you can only 'vote with your wallet' for something that exists, or simply abstain from voting for it - but you can't vote specifically against something, or for something that isn't included as a voting option.

As a result, GTAO has been getting narrower and narrower in focus, because R* keeps doubling down on whatever sells or drives engagement - and that'd be bad enough if they were ignoring less popular aspects of the game that actually existed, but in GTAO's case, they're viewing it as 'this thing gets used because it's what players want above all else', and not 'this thing gets used, because that's the only option available'.
