Why is everyone hating on Franklin house

Recommended Posts

Over the years, I have seen that a lot of people have been complaining about Franklin house in Vinewood Hills, people say that the his house in South Los Santos is better because it’s like a real house and that the one in Vinewood is too big... I mean it’s the point, you start the game in a crappy house and finish it with having a huge mansion/penthouse/modern house... anyone in real life would prefer to live in his Vinewood house...

It's probably more the way he's depicted living it in. It should be like, he's been given an amazing dream house where he can hang out with his friends and get up to all sorts of stuff. From his childhood room in his aunt's house in the 'hood scraping by to a stylish mansion in the hills with millions in the bank, should be living the life. But instead it's a completely empty lifeless house where Franklin lives a lonely isolated existence ironing shirts, looking sadly at a picture of his ex, taking the trash out and talking to Chop for company. The Chamberlain Hills house has some character and life going on in and around it so it's a more interesting place to be in the game.

When I switch to Franklin to see what he's getting up to in his awesome new mansion

That's a great explanation to this.

I certainly never heard these complaints and I've been on these forums for 9 years straight.

The one major complaint about Franklin's house I did hear was that the mansion was to easily acquired, as it was given to him, making half the reasons for committing crimes like robberies for money so pointless.

Yeah there's really no sense of achievement to it, or longing for it since there's no real downside to living at the aunt's house in terms of actually playing the game. In terms of gameplay the new house gives you nothing, the activities you can do are the same as in the old house (change clothes, watch TV, smoke, drink), and you're just now in a house that takes longer to walk through to save and is in a more out of the way location that's much more annoying to drive to.

Contrast in IV where you're given the Middle Park East safehouse. Yes you're given it so again it doesn't really feel earned, but at least with that it gave you a useful new feature (internet access), and is in a much more convenient location than where you previously lived (right there in Algonquin where most of your missions are and central to the map, on a busy road full of cabs, while before you were in sh*tty isolated Bohan commuting everywhere and having to walk up and down stairs to access your apartment), plus you keep the old one so it's an extra not a replacement. One is a well thought out "reward" and one isn't.

I mean I like Franklins house but its super bare and just meh , the thing with a house is its supposed to feel like a home , Michaels story arc where he loses his family really shows this off as the longer he goes without his family the worse looking the house gets. Trevors trailer whilst not pretty is very lived in , you can tell hes at home there. Franklins penthouse whilst gorgeous to look at and certainly a nicer place to park your cars just feels hollow. It'd be nice if over time he got more stuff to make it feel like a home but sadly its not the case. I had the same issue with Madd Doggs House in San Andreas , theres game machines and stuff but really its just a big ass empty house.  At least with Franklins Aunts house the place looks lived in , theres clothes sticking out , the place has a homey feeling to it whilst the Penthouse place feels like a showroom with nothing in it

I have to agree with the others that his house doesn't feel very "lived" in. Even where it's situated isn't that convenient. It's shoved up in the Vinewood Hills and it's a pain in the arse IMO trying to get to missions from there. I think the aesthetic design is quite nice as you would expect from a house like that, but it just felt like an excuse to have Franklin get a "mansion" (And I use that loosely as it's obviously not a mansion) like Tommy did in Vice City and CJ in San Andreas.

This is also the point of the story where Franklin starts to feel like he becomes irrelevant and pushed more into the background. At the very least it would've been cool if you saw Lamar or someone hang out there occasionally just like the rest of the safehouses. That's probably why it feels empty and soulless.

Unpopular opinion: I prefer his Aunts house as it was fun having a roommate even if she's annoying
