The new patch has ruined the game for me - now getting ERR_GFX_STATE errors randomly. I did not install the Hotfix driver - I have a 10-core/20-thread CPU so I figured the hotfix was only for 4 - 6 core CPUs?

Gah, ditto- just got this on launch... what are they doing!
genuinely might just leave it and pick up the new Star Wars game - I hear it works...

did you figure out a permanent fix?

As a Win7 64bit User i cant use the Nvidia hotfix Driver.

Just wanted to say that i tried to delete the command line "-cpuLoadRebalancing", with the actual Patch. I got again frozen screen after 1-2 hours playing. Especially in a City like St Dennis.

As i went into the theater it freeze several times as the arabian woman did her fire dance. As i used the command line again all freezes were gone.

But i have a older Graphic card, Nvidia 970 GTX with a 3,5 GB + 500 MB slower Ram. Also a 6 year old intel i7 3820 4 real core and 16 GB RAM.

nvidia just updated win7/8 version 441.34patch

How much RAM does the game say you have in the settings screen out of interest?

People with ERR_GFX_STATE errors, try deleting the shader caches from Documents/Rockstar/RDR2/Settings. I have a feeling some of the errors are related to caches that have never been cleared and probably should by Rockstar every new patch if they change shader related stuff.

Change settings from the XML file. To access it: Documents>Rockstar Games>Red Dead Redemption 2>Settings>system

This will open in notepad. Now go all the way down and change the resolution - assuming it's 1920x1080.

<screenWidth value="1920" />

<screenHeight value="1080" />

To get full screen window - type "0" in the windowed value.

<windowed value="0" />

Save and close.

If it still crashes, then delete the "Settings" folder. Note: this will completely reset your graphics settings, so take a screenshot of them before deleting.

First of all - thank you for help. Effect is very weird.

-qfter change res and other in notepad game can run in full screen but most options in settings are LOW (not like before update)

- any try to change of most setting = crash
- deletting copletely settings folder = crash of game on start

I reainstalled game before this.
This is my hardware, its new, updated... https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ASUS-TUF-Gaming-FX505DY/

Go to the folder I mentioned and delete these 3 files:

oVBB1na.png

It might say Vulkan or D3D12/DX12 depending on what you use.

I try it. I even left over ONLY settings file.
Same results.

Only backdoor solution (thanks to you) - I can edit manual every graphicv option in "IN XML settings file, and IT runs like that = no crash.
Any change of settings IN game = crash.

Game is not moded. Fresh, clean install.
REINSTALL of GPU?

¯\_(⊙︿⊙)_/¯

Anyone else have cut scenes play out with no dialog but still have ambient sounds? Quite annoying as I like to watch the scenes to follow the story but then what seem like integral scenes play out without any voice sounds :(

Wow, this latest update has made a massive difference for me.

I've gone from this oddity, struggling to get 60fps in 1080p or 1440p with exact same settings in Vulkan, one image is 1080p the other is 1440p and regardless of resolution the fps didn't change from 52-54, in windows 7, windows 10 DX12/Vulkan was an absolute mess.

IVKRNnh.jpg
x7Lx40r.jpg

to suddenly getting full on multi-gpu support in Windows 10 with Vulkan with an average of 90fps @ 1440p

BxFJ4Zi.jpg
mABFqBI.jpg
ZKiQ9ve.jpg
Qy4yXes.jpg
fwAE3WK.jpg

the overall improvement for me is massive, however I did notice an anomoly, I ran the benchmark with VSync off and got the following results

Z2N1lrx.jpg

I then ran the benchmark again and got these odd results

9fXQwS3.jpg

Ultimately the 1% lows seem a little low but also with Vsync On, the highest fps I should be seeing should be no higher than 65 because the fps is supposed to be capped and the 1% low should only be around 48fps, would appear they have some issues with the sync side of things when the game is capped to 60fps with Vsync On with a non GSync 60hz 4k monitor in my case, something is not quite right there.

In one of my comments in the last update I mentioned the flickering with DX12 also happening the same as Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and wow Nvidia has addressed it in both games 😮 just a coincidence but it seems fixed in RDR2 but not completely in SotTR, it's a Global illumination/volumetric Lighting/Fog combination issue with DX12 shaders, it's also partially present in Farcry 5 and New Dawn.

Overall this update along with the Nvidia Hotfix and Kabooom, SLI/Multi GPU is finally fully working with Vulkan, and I no longer need an upgrade to play @ 1440p 60fps on my 4 and a half year old 980ti's in SLI, I F***ing ❤️ R* for that alone, those poor poor crunch workers at R* HQ having to take a break from snorting coke off the hookers long enough to fix the SLI, thank you guys, it's paying off 😄   :r*:

Yeah, show a little reverence when speaking of multi-national corporations. They are sensitive, and they'll listen to you, if you have the RIGHT attitude! Be happy you were even afforded the opportunity to give them $60 for bug-riddled software, smdh

Pretty sure the minimum 5 FPS thing is a bug. I get that result too and I've never gotten anywhere near that low in the game. Average 48 FPS, maximum, 60.

Yeah, hoping it is just a one off, but it's good to see the game finally behaving the way I was hoping it would, it'll keep getting better in the coming weeks like GTA V did, this one has a lot more foliage and is heavy on gpu's but definitely getting better each update.

What the hell?
Did a pretty long session yesterday with barely any crashes, and today.

CRASHES continuously...

Vulkan Overclock Disabled: Crashes (ERR_GFX_STATE)

Vulkan Overclock Enabled: Crashes (ERR_GFX_STATE)

DX12 Overclock Disabled: Crashes (No specific error)

DX12 Overclock Enabled: Crashes (No specific error)

Deleting all the .bin and caches files from settings doesn't seem to change anything.

I'm on the latest windows 10 release and NVIDIA Hotfix drivers.

GTX 1070, Extreme Gaming (tested. the GPU is healthy)

It started crashing a lot the first time I reached the grass fields at night, although performance are super great in this condition, as there are very little vegetation shadow.

That said the game handled much more demanding scenes with no problem (sunset volumetric lights through the forest)
I don't know what to do...

By the way, is it normal that the night is so dark?

As you can see the shadowed areas are liek literally pitch black; it looks amazing, but I was wondering ig it was intentional, as it makes night time very realistc, but gameplay quite hard, as you can't see anything.
(This is also the area/weather that started causing me lots of crashing).

Night time in some regions is very dark and can be close to pitch black in some weathers, it's intentional. Use your lamp ;)

Ah OK.

As long as the gameplay is targeted to this visual style I don't mind.

Looks extremely real.

Any idea on my crash situation?

On console night time was too bright, and made the lantern nearly useless. I prefer how it is on PC.

Ok the situation is still awful...

The game runs well, but I experience random crashes without any sense.

Sometimes it crashes 3,4 times in a non-demanding area, sometimes it plays 2 hours in a super graphically intensive area without problems.

Still...this is really ruining my game experience, as I always have this fear the game will crash at the back of my mind...Don't know how to solve this...I cannot play like this.

Being a very slow paced game it's really annoying to re-do missions because the game crashed...

Anyway Do you have any idea on how to fix these 2 issues I get?

As stated before, in some lighting conditions (quite often) I get this sharp line which separates 2 levels of lighting:

0xF0oklb_t.png

jeyORdqL_t.png

And some other times I get these extremely stippled shadows:

aNJXZkV0_t.png

The majority of shadows are quite good in general, as you can see here:

SqHdLxPC_t.png

Any ideas?

Nvidia latest hotfix on a GTX 1070.

I have used up 2518 from my 2600 MB with my settings, at my Nvidia 970 GTX with 3500 MB + 500 slow RAM.

Seems the Game never let you use all your Video-RAM.

i have same issue like you, but i think i found the fix for myself dont know if its work for you.

in my case im using Vulkan API with Fullscreen, then when i move my mouse to the right in game it'll show the windows cursor,

i try to alt+tab and found the culprit, in my case it's xbox gamebar overlay showing tips, turning the tips off fix my issue hope it'll work for you.

I have the same card and the same issue.

Its ridiculous because even if the 0.5gb of slow ram counts for nothing it’s still low balling it by 0.9GB.

The first update also changed the settings consumption values so it can be set as high as before - even though my PC was giving 40-50fps at those levels.

Interesting...the soap opera continues.
So I did 2 things, specifically:

  • Reverted to the previous Nvidia driver (441.20)
  • Enabled Fullscreen (I hate the fact the game always defaults to borderless window)

Without any noticeable drop in framerate or evident stutter, I played 3 hours in a variety of different areas in teh map and it didn't crash.

I don't know which one of the 2 things did the trick, but considering I reached such a perfect balance, I'm not touching anything.
I also put soft shadows to high and the stippling seems to be better.

Is there a way to lock fullscreen once and for all?

The only annoying thing is that nasty sharp glitchy shadow line.

My game always starts up with borderless window mode. I have to set it back to Fullscreen via settings menu every time I start the game. Doesnt matter what the settings.xml file is set to ”0”.

About crashes, i have been playing for over 4-5 hours without a single crash. Then suddenly random crashes. The crashes are some random and sadly ruining the game experience since if you are unlucky, you sometimes need to replay the same mission 2-3 times.

funny how I said that I hope that the GTA V crash-problem wont  follow over to RDR2 PC. But it did.

In the boot arguments?

By the way, when rockstar says 4-6 cores, do they mean without hyperthreading?

Because I have a 4 core with hyperthreading but no stutters
