Unlimited ammo glitch

I don't know if this is a well-known glitch but I remember discovering it back in 2002 - 2003.

 

Activate the code for unlimited ammo for electrogun (VOLTFEST), pick up whatever weapon at the beginning (pistol, shotgun, machine-gun) and go into Residential to the 3rd Kill Frenzy. (Map:http://en.wikigta.org/wiki/Kill_Frenzies_Residential_District_(GTA2)

Complete the frenzy and head over to the 5th frenzy (the Tank in the RV Park) and complete that one as well. Once you exit the tank, you'll have only one weapon which you can't switch from. Fire up all the ammunition et voilà: the ammunition will either go to K.F. or 0 and never end. You have unlimited ammo. Unfortunately it only works for one weapon at a time. I remember S-Uzi reaching the K.F. ammo and it was impossible to pick up new ammo for the weapon itself. Other weapons will eventually reach 0 and you'll be able to pick up new ammo.

 

What is the reason for this? Is this a common fact?
