TL;DR: A windows 10 update prevents software from writing to folders on certain conditions. Set both Steam and the Rockstar Launcher to run in admin for all users (maybe it works for one user only, i dunno).

OK, so I had a similar problem, but it manifested itself differently depending on whether I started from steam or from rockstar launcher. When I started from steam, I got the following interesting error:

"Unable to launch GTA5.exe due to a lack of privileges on the Game Library directory. Please remove any compatibility mode settings or try running as an administrator. If you continue to have problems, please contact Rockstar Games Customer Service... "

The problem was that this screen was visible for only 1.1 seconds. I noticed it because I was about to write a ticket to rockstar support along with a screen captured video of the error. Then when I was editing I noticed the error message.

Bottom line: It's like "the company which shall not be named" is actively trying to push us over to Linux. Good luck!

I just fixed the crashing launcher bug for me. For me it helped to change the sound settings from the current used device to either 16 Bit 48000 Hz, 24 Bit 48000 Hz or 32 Bit 48000Hz.

It seems that the launcher is using kind of system configurations before launching the game. For me GeforceXperience recognizes the launcher as a game and puts his overlay above the launcher.

If i change my sound settings while the launcher is active, a notification gets displayed. Something like: "The Device is currently in use, are you sure to change the settings?"

If i do the change without the launcher open, this notification is not displayed. I tested every sound setting for multiple devices.

Only these 3 settings are working for me. I tested every sound socket, also my headset and my sound boxes.

Every other sound setting crashes the rockstar launcher while booting "Red Dead Redemption 2".

I hope that this will fix your problem too and that u will have finally fun with that game now!
