Will the Universes Finally Merge? (What is this Era called?)

Recommended Posts

neo92boi

Will GTA VI be a new era in the Grand Theft Auto series or will it be another extension of the HD Universe?

Being that the rule of thumb stated by Rockstar, no 3D Universe characters (Actual Models) can appear in the the HD Universe.

If this next game is not set in the HD Universe and it is a new Era entirely, I think a merger of the two would make Grand Theft Auto VI bust the hinges of the door.

Imagine if in the the first GTA VI reveal trailer you see two men silhouetted by a tropical sun. You can’t hear the dialogue all the way until the end. The conversation is very animated from the two men’s movements. The camera zooms in from the distance and you realize it’s Luis Lopez talking as his image becomes clearer and you can partially hear his voice,  you also notice it’s a older white gentleman sitting in the chair next to him but his features are still masked by the glow of the sun with only a gold chain  and bracelet glistening in our view...screen fades to black..and you finally hear Luis

“ * Sigh *.... Ok Mr. Vercetti....if that’s what you want..say less“

Grand Theft Auto VI fades in.

Good Idea.

Since no GTA had a mindblowing story, it could be compensated with characters and connections to older GTAs, which could lead to interesting things.

This could easily  be a fan service overkill, but I would love it :D

That would be taking a huge sh*t in the story of Vice City and TBOGT, it would be basically a retcon. It would be as big a betrayal to the fans of the story of the 2 games as stomping Johnny's head was to the fans of TLAD's story. Come on, even without keeping in mind that merging universes is stupid, at least, if the universes are to be merged, let's keep the stories and characters consistent with what happened in the respective game.

I don't think they'll 'merge' but I do think this will continue on from the HD universe. I don't see any main characters coming back or anything like that, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get little references here and there and maybe even some minor characters that can crossover without a problem. I don't think the jump will be that huge in the new game to see it as a new era.

The only instance on where I see it being seen as a seperate era is if they go back in time and it isn't a modern setting.

Since all the stories (except Niko) in the HD universe are sh*t, the next GTA could profit from compeling stories that they already have and mix them in a decent way.

Klebitz was a meth addict. Deal with it.

I honestly don’t know how this could be sh*tting on the stories of the two games because you have no idea what could happen between the two. That’s just pessimistic af.

Honestly I feel a merging of the two worlds would bring clarity to the GTA Universe and ultimately pay homage to itself and its fans. I don’t feel like the characters from the 3D era were given the proper curtain call they deserve. We deserve to see how far Tommy went with his empire in Vice City, we deserve to bare witness to how POWERFUL Carl Johnson became after the events of San Andreas, what happened to Claude after killing Catalina and downfall of the Leone crime family . So many unanswered questions and stories to be expanded on. Not to mention the HD universe could definitely use some lore and depth added to it because it’s honestly in my opinion dry in the department of action and expansion. Nobody cares about what happened to Niko, Luis, Johnny, Michael, Franklin, and Trevor because they’re stories were too relatable and easily understood. 3D eras stories were theater worthy.

Nah, I think even if they were to merge the universes it wouldn't be a major thing. Like, were, not going to get old protagonists as new protagonists or even an old protagonist in any sort of significant role. They'd get minor references as little easter eggs at most.

I'm guessing we're going to get another standalone story that just so happens to take place in the same universe as the last two.

R* likes to "back-paddle" on their statements, there are also some references to GSF in GTA V...

I'd say it is not entirely out of the question.

it's more of a parallel universes deal than a completely separate universes deal, right? to explain why liberty city and los santos and area look completely different from how they did in the older games

Highly doubt the universes will merge.

In terms of names of things (company brands, vehicle names, place names, etc) carrying over between universes - I’m pretty sure Rockstar explained that such things can ‘carry over’ while actual characters would not carry over as characters that exist in the 3D universe don’t exist in the HD universe. They’re completely different cannon. Sure, they’ve back-peddled on many things but the separated universes explanation has been consistent since back to when GTA III was released to explain why characters didn’t carry over from the 2D/top down universe to the 3D universe.

If the next GTA title is in a new universe (though, in my opinion, I doubt that this will be the case); it’ll continue the same previous tradition - characters that exist in the HD or previous universes won’t exist within Or carry over to the new universe.

Though I concur with many of you guys on the likelihood of this occurring being slim, I definitely feel Rockstar should do this. It’s always great to have completely new stories made from the ground up, but I also feel continuity and expansion of a series of stories can hold just as much weight as an original content. The feeling I got from RDR 2 and the original Grand Theft Auto series’ (3D Era) have not been matched by the HD Era in anyway. Rockstar needs to set some concrete continuity and lore with the era of in which Grand Theft Auto set in, I feel that is the most integral thing that is missing from it currently and quite possibly be the very thing that gives GTA its substance again. GTA V was fantastic game , with an entertaining story...but not a gripping one, and IV was fantastic game with a gripping story ..but not an entertaining one

I just feel as though it would get too convoluted and there would be way too many plot holes having 3D and HD era crossing over and then adding on the new characters that VI brings. Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to see Tommy Vercetti in the newer game as much as the next guy, but I wouldn't want it to ruin the story that was already set. I think references and minor characters are completely fine, but bringing main characters back shakes up the universes entirely. The only instance on where I see this working without plot holes is VI is a total reboot and has nothing to do with any previous GTA, but at that point there isn't much reason to bring familiar characters back. Either that or Rockstar somehow manages to craft a great story that has all the eras crossing over and makes sense, which would be a huge task.

^^ +1.  Way too complicated to interstitch them correctly without leaving a bunch of spots that would be unnatural, not to mention hamstringing/stunting new stories from being born.  Look at some newer shows like True Detective, Fargo, etc that are the "same" series but are completely different season to season -- they have managed to really flourish without recycling any characters.

Complete sidebar I hope R* buys/licenses rights to Breaking Bad and makes a video game based on it

There is a plaque somewhere in GTA IV's map where it reads something like: Claude, Vic, CJ, Tommy and Toni R.I.P.

So they are not coming back. R* said in essence that they are not re-creating any of the 3D character models. So that means that those characters are dead too.

The only possible returning characters are those from 2D, 3D and HD media and HD era characters, that were alive after IV and V. That means characters who were less explored, and of who's voice actor R* didn't piss off.

They're already "merged", there's lots of stuff shared between the "universes", probably more that's shared than isn't. The reason for saying they're separate is so they're not chained to so many games' worth of backstory that they'd have to stay consistent with. It's easier to tell new stories and design new maps how they want etc if they have the freedom to start whatever aspects of the game they want afresh.

However that doesn't mean they can't also keep whatever aspects they want from older games. City names, cars, products, celebrities, even characters (eg Lazlow and other radio ones) etc are shared between universes, while other things aren't. The idea of universes being separate isn't to restrict them (eg to ban them from bringing an old character back even if they wanted to), it's to help give them freedom to do what they want (eg be free to make a new game without having to account for a load of old character's backstories or drastically changed city layouts). If one of the many things they decided to keep from 3D universe next time was a character/characters it wouldn't change anything, they already pick and choose what they keep separate and what they don't. The parallel universes of 3D era and HD era would still exist just as they do now with, say, a Blista Compact, Sprunk and Fernando Martinez in both.

I totally agree, and I think you bring up an amazing point here that is often overlooked while people debate the storylines of various GTA games, particularly IV Vs V. As much as I think V has a much better story than IV, and I thought IV's was boring, I can see why some people who are looking for something darker and more realistic like IV's story better, and I can even nod my head in respect at differing tastes. But the thing I always found completely laughable was people debating the stories as if IV was some kind of a classic, comparing it laughably to Gangster films by Coppola or Scorsese. I also loved the 3D era GTA games, but likewise, none of them had groundbreaking, amazing stories either.

Tommy Vercetti would be the ultimate antagonist, behind every motive since 1986 with his rise to power. Even a hand in the Illuminati that R* has hinted since III but more evident since IV, and even behind the events of GTA V. It would be the perfect end to what could possibly be the final story driven GTA before the age of online finally takes over. He would be the villain we would hate to kill, because we remembered him and loved his character and there is an attachment, but his vile actions toward a much more subtle antagonist, like killing a love interest or family member or both, will demand reckoning, but left with a sense of sorrow because of past ties and a sense of personalization but also a sense of loss, like Vic Vance and Louise but at a much more closer and sensitive capacity. The next GTA is calling for the darkest, creepiest, and most subliminally mystifying experience given the recent installment of shrouded mystery and speculation.

Remember the temple south of the gun shop along ocean drive in vice city where Lance takes you to buy a gun. The mystery of the Illuminati began then. Next it was epsilon in San Andreas.

The center of secrecy and secret organizations has been strong all along since III and modern organized crime is has been said to be the calculated works of a higher power that we cannot comprehend, in these times of non existent Capone’s and Dillingers, not exposed by media and kept hidden from public eye.

We have not seen the last of the Yakuza and Triads either......

I don't think merging would happen as its just so far in time. I also don't think the next itinerary will be part of the HD era. Imagining that GTA VI comes out at 2021 at the earliest, it'd be eight years since V and twelve since IV. Consider there was only three years between III and SA.

I agree, but I still wish they would. Oddly enough, I have a much deeper, and more profound emotional connection to 3D era characters than anything in the HD era games. I love V, and enjoy the hell out of all the characters, but you know what? I don't feel connected to any of the three protagonists as I did to either Tommy V or CJ. This is also highly subjective, of course. But to me, I care a helluva lot more about things like this:

-What happened to Donald Love

-Is Tommy V still in Vice?

-Are Rosenberg and the various Love Fist musicians still hanging out in San Andreas?

-What's new with Tony Cipriani? Is his Mom still alive?

-Have the Forelli Brothers taken over Liberty or have Luigi, Tony, and Joey the Leane family together to take over?

-Where is CJ these days? Kendl? Sweet? Ceasar? And Toreno!! Hahaha love the way James Woods voiced him.

-The Truth?

-Is Fido still in Liberty?

I can go on an on. Sure I kind of wouldn't mind seeing what's going on with Trevor, Michael, and Franklin, but not as much as all the abandoned lore of the 3D era GTA.

@ChiroVette I know what you mean. I feel a greater connection to the 3D era characters too. I wonder though - is it greater writing or is just nostalgia?

I think its a few things at play, and I don't think its better writing:

Nostalgia certainly plays a role. But also, Rockstar seemed a lot more concerned with GTA lore and continuity in the 3D era. There were also 5 full games to really weave the continuity into that universe, not just 2 games. But perhaps the biggest reason of all that I feel so connected that era is because after that era ended, and GTA IV came out, Rockstar exploded the entire continuity of a universe I had already invested 7-8 years of my life in to that point. It sounds weird, but I think I kind of lost trust in Rockstar. Knowing that they were so willing to take a continuity I had grown to really love and care about and summarily toss the whole thing into a trash heap, I realized that they would just as likely do the same thing to this universe when the next one launched. So there seemed no point in investing myself emotionally into V's universe.

I mean, that's just me, though.

Ah that make sense.

III, VC and SA link and then are further developed by LCS and VCS. Essentially five games.

IV had TLATD and TBOGT but V had no further development and thus gives no real reason to revisit. I understand what you mean - there's less investment and less connection.

I also think that as LCS and VCS took place in different years to their parent titles (III and VC) it allowed more depth and change. We don't get that with TLATD nor TBOGT.

Plus, we haven't had a third title yet which should tie in the other two but by the time it comes out IV will feel like ancient history.

4K universe is a great solution for GTA VI, giving them ability to create multiple cities and connect them by land. If they use HD Los Santos and connect it to San Fierro and Las Venturas in HD universe, then one question remains. How the hell additional land appeared out of nowhere.
