Jimbatron
Must be a stage of life thing but I have less time for gaming at home than I used to. Anyway last year I was on a long haul flight and noticed someone in front playing GTA V on a gaming laptop, and I could see enough to know it looked great and was running smooth. Must admit I had a bit of envy stuck with the mediocre inflight movies. I do a fair bit of travelling on trains and planwa that feels wasted. So I’m thinking of getting a high end gaming laptop. I wouldn’t get it just for RDR2, but one of my pre-requisites if I’m going to spend a serious wedge on it would be that it will run it well. I'm thinking of getting something with an RTX 2080 (not the Max-Q version). Is anyone running on such a spec and what can they report? I'm going to be watching Black Friday deals, if anyone can recommend a good buy that would be hugely appreciated. PS. I know a desktop would be vastly better VFM, hence the explanation above, a laptop will fit my circumstances better. Aerosmithfan999
I’m glad this topic came up, because gaming laptops are often dismissed when it comes to gaming. Speaking from personal experience, I would highly recommend a gaming laptop. I bought an MSI laptop with a GTX 970M almost four years ago, and it still runs incredibly well. If you do take the plunge and buy a gaming laptop, you’ve got the right idea about going for an RTX 2080. An RTX 2080 is a ridiculously powerful card which will cover high-end gaming for years. Apart from the GPU, the other things worth considering are: RAM: 16GB or more in my opinion. Especially if you’re trying to future proof your laptop. CPU: i5s are good-value processors, but typically aren’t paired with very high-end gaming laptops. In this case, I’d recommend looking for a laptop that has an i7-9750H. Six core laptops may seem excessive for some people, but all that extra horse power may come in handy as games become more demanding. Display: 1080p and 4K are both great for gaming, although 4K gaming laptops seem harder to find in my experience. 1080p displays still look gorgeous, even today. An IPS display with a 144Hz refresh rate is what you can expect at a higher price point. I know gaming laptops come with a high price tag and lack the upgradeability of conventional desktops, but as long as you future proof your laptop, you’ll be set for years to come. Plus, the added portability is the icing on the cake. Sorry to ramble, but I thought I’d share my experience with gaming laptops. Good luck with your purchase. Eddie1506
I'm playing on this one: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-ROG-Strix-GL703GM-Scar-Edition-8750H-GTX-1060-FHD-120-Hz-Laptop-Review.309052.0.html I bought it a little over a year ago and it has proved to be very good in everything I threw at it. Since I didn't have time yet to tinker with graphics options, I used an optimized setup, which has about 75% options on ultra, 20% on high and rest on medium (not sure about FXAA, HDR or similar) and it runs fine and looks great on 1080p and 120Hz. ViperDG
Laptops ar ehot and have small screen in even the biggest laptops. Plus any with a decent GPU is going to cost you a fortune. I would rather be setting at my desk with a full size gaming keyboard, kensignton Expert tracball mouse behind a 29" 1440P 166HZ GSync monitor. Iash91
I bought a new laptop about 2-3 months ago and it has an RTX 2080. I use a cooling-pad and usually am sitting in aircon (we're going into Aussie summer rn, so a must even without a gaming laptop), so heating does not seem to be an issue even with extended gaming sessions. RDR runs perfectly fine on it at Ultra/high settings. There's a few less than great FPS moments during fields with tons of grass - which I'm sure is more of an optimisation issue, if not a settings issue I'm not bothered fixing. I also primarily play Battlefront 2, and pretty much all newly released games I play on ultra and they run fine. But all in all great purchase for my lifestyle since I travel a lot. Hook it up to the TV whenever I want a larger monitor but I'm usually happy with the 17 inch screen. I'm thinking of purchasing a new cooling-pad though. Any suggestions for a relatively cheap one? 13 minutes ago, ViperDG said: I read it but anybody as long as there not homeless should e able to find space for a PC. So you know, people have different circumstances... Edited November 12, 2019 by Iash91 Jimbatron

Thanks to everyone for advice and comments above. I got my laptop from PC Specialist, with an i9 9900k processor, 32gb RAM, an RTX 2080 graphics card and a 4K screen. I get a nice 40-50 fps on RDR2 with a mix of ultra to high settings in 4k - obviously you could get much higher frame rates, but I'm happy with anything in the 30-60 range. It absolutely devours GTA V. The portability of it is an absolute revelation. I even completed my first Casino Heist whilst sitting up in bed! Seeing as I don't have as much time for gaming as I would like these days, it just creates new opportunities to get a quick session in. If me and the missus ever move to a bigger place where I can get a study, it could even be docked with a monitor etc. The only real downside is the expense, but honestly, I don't think I'd ever go back to not having a powerful gaming laptop now. Varys
I play on a GE75 Raider. i7 8750h, 16gb ram and an RTX 2080. Like mentioned above, I travel a lot so a gaming laptop is a must right now for me. Barrett_killz
Barrett_killz
I had to buy a new laptop last month and went for ultra portability but relatively decent specs. MSI Prestige 14 i7-10710U 6-core @ 4.7 GHz GTX 1650 Max-Q 4GB GDDR5 16GB RAM 1TB SSD I ran RDR2 on HUB settings in Full HD and got 35-45 FPS in the benchmark. Played around 100 hours on it and did not encounter any stutters, but the game runs quite well given the quality settings and weaker GPU. It has 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports so I might buy an eGPU in the future, as they seem to be cheaper nowadays. Given that it’s a really portable machine (1,29kg, thin and 14” screen), I think gaming on ultra portable machines is slowly starting to be a thing.
