It was a very interesting video. It does make me realize that yes, the RX 580 is pushing incredible visual for its price category. The large amount of complaints I've seen here about performance were pretty much all NVIDIA cards. It's puzzling on why those cards seem to struggle a bit more. I'm not surprised this games need a good amount of tweaking. Perhaps some are too used to just tick "High" and be done with it.

Maybe this video will shut those saying that RDR 2 is poorly optimised and that it is next GTA IV. As Rich said, it had a rocky launch, but that does not mean that it is poorly optimised. Just day one issues that will be fixed.

I still think it's a mix of both because to hit consistent 60 fps at 1080p means lowering to the point textures are nearly absent in large swaths of the environment. But I do respect RS trying to future proof the game.

Finally someone saying what I've been saying all along. Other bugs not withstanding, Rockstar is aiming high for the future and we're coming to a point where Ultra settings are proper ULTRA HIGH and not something that's just a bit better than console quality. People shouldn't be mad for not being able to reach Ultra on a 2080Ti when even PC's Low preset is higher quality than the consoles'. Rockstar thought this out just fine. People are just not used to this kind of thing and are used to be able to show off at Ultra Settings 4K60. Not anymore.

I dunno what to do as a 980 owner. The 1060 looks like it gets its ass kicked by every other card in that presentation. I've been running on High out of stubbornness but I'm thinking about just going all medium except for stuff like GI and textures.

Well, RDR 2 is extremely detailed and huge game, there is no open world game complex like RDR 2. I think Rockstar did a great job, after all, they had a tough job, we haven't seen anyone releasing such a complex game like RDR 2 still. Rockstar is known for pushing the limit and setting up standards for industry.

When PC's Low settings are better than a lot of console stuff, you shouldn't feel bad about using Medium/Low because it'll still look better and run better. It's a naming thing. My 1060 as I said manages 40-60 FPS on Medium/High.

I continue thinking there is no optimisation issue here at all. Yes, some bugs especially on the CPU side, but no egregious "GTA IV level" optimisation issues.

So R* basically did their work too good on the graphic implementations and made it future proof.

I would recommend you to play with the settings, there are a lot of settings to be manipulated, lot of options. See what your CPU and GPU loves.

Nah, the game doesn't feel like it has issues with resource utilization. Looking at my CPU and GPU usage tells me that much very clearly. I can tell I'll be able to hit 60+ FPS on High with a major GPU upgrade. But the crashes and general launch instability helped contribute to the consensus that this is somehow GTA IV 2.0. Which it really isn't.

Still feels a bit shoddy in the UI department, though. For KB and mouse.

I should, I get kind of impatient though especially because so many restarts are required. I'll go down to medium overall and then see what turning up (or down) each settings does to my performance. Shouldn't take too long.

I’m sure that was to strictly match the console equivalent settings. Realistically, higher texture settings - if you have enough VRAM - will barely affect your frame rate. I’m sure you could get pretty much the same performance if you bumped up textures to Ultra on the 580.

This video pretty much proves what people have been claiming. That a lot of the settings are made to scale/future proof the game’s visuals. Hell, I remember myself and someone else stating that some settings on the PC have no console equivalents, the PC version is just higher quality in general. And they literally state this in the video after doing their comparisons they said.

People are asking for a lot for 4K60FPS on anything higher than console settings. I think people don’t realize just exactly how demanding 4K is. Another huge misconception is the 20xx series. Before RDR2, people have complained about Nvidia’s greediness because it isn’t that much of jump in performance than anything from their 10xx series. The only true benefit is its’ ray tracing capabilities, which most games don’t even use yet.

whatever you do keep textures at ultra, that doesnt seem to tax much. then try a bunch of settings at medium to see the diference

the game has so many options on my settings it looks stunning while still mantaining a decent fps.

^This. I noticed almost no FPS drop between high and ultra textures. It's a lot of other settings that have to be dropped. And it still maintains 50-60 FPS.

20 series is overhyped bs. its better than its previous gen but not by much.

Watching the video now, yeah, my 1060 experience basically matches DF's one, and they're running it at 1440p. Thought it would be a lot worse. I think the source of a lot of the issues really is the CPU weirdery that is going on for people with 4 cores 4 threads. Because the game seems to shine even on previous generation GPU's just fine with a better CPU. And yes, yes everyone, it's fine to run the game on High on a powerful GPU because this isn't your common Ultra. It really isn't.

RDR2 PC is the next Crysis.

All future GPU's will be benchmarked to this game for the foreseeable future.

So many restarts? I only need to restart when changing particles. Unless it's a setting I've settled on like Textures or AF that requires the restart nothing is triggering restart for me only particles.

probably..there could be some improvement in nvidia drivers? cause amd is kicking the ass of nvidia in this game... with equivalent cards.

*Purely for console equivalent purposes. Should be able to bump up to 16X for AF with no performance impact whatsoever, as well as enable Long Shadows, and higher Decal and Fur Quality. Obviously TAA and its' sharpening is entirely up to you.

I'm assuming water physics is 50% since that's what it looks like, as well as everyone else recommends for good performance. Not too sure about Grass Level of Detail, if anyone can confirm what value it's at.

Thank You for your post, with these settings I can get quite stable 60 fps in 900p and be closer to 60 in 1080p. I think they could optimize a little further though, given 970 had no issues running 1080p 60 fps locked on console settings this whole generation...

Day One issues? You mean Day Five issues. Some people still can't start game and many still experience stutters, freezes and crashes. I couldn't launch the game for 4 days, only after the latest update.

This is not true. Some are lower than low, but many are medium and some even high. If I use the X1X settings that DF showed and turn it to 4K I still can't reach a smooth 60FPS with my Ryzen 5 3600 and RX 5700XT (which performs as good as a RTX 2080 in this game).

Sure but you can't make it like console settings. Console settings are even lower than PC's lowest settings.

I think only light settings like textures are high. Fur on medium. Parallax occlusion on medium.

Can't think of any demanding settings that could be high on consoles.

Don't forget that volumetrics are lower than low on the X1X. That's a very demanding setting.
