How to make AA look less like AIDS

Recommended Posts

Shanki

TAA blurs everything to hell, FXAA does almost nothing, MSAA X2 takes about 20 FPS and brings wierd graphical glitches (trees sometimes being transparent for example) and off looks horrible. The terrible AA solutions are amongst my worst gripes with this game. Why couldn't they just use SMAA? Or, Nvidia's DLLS just to see if it helps?

Now, I am above 60 FPS with MSAA X2, textures on Ultra, and everything except water (which is at medium) and volumetrics (which is also at medium) on high, so i'm happy, but since i'm cursed with having a 144Hz monitor, not happy enough. I started researching what AA looks the best but doesn't kill your FPS and i came to the conclusion that when you set TAA to High, FXAA to ON, put the IN-GAME TAA Sharpness slider to MAX, AND enable the sharpening filter in either your Nvidia software or AMD software, the AA doesn't look all that horrible.

I have a Nvidia card and there are two ways to enable the sharpening, either in-game when you press ALT+F3 which brings up the brand new Reshade stuff Nvidia added not long ago (For me, it says that "A supported game is required to use this feature", some people say that it works for them though), or do it in the Nvidia Control Panel. In the Nvidia Control Panel, you go to Manage 3D Settings, Program Settings, select Red Dead Redemption II (or add it if you don't have it there), set "Image Sharpening" to ON and that's mostly it. Now, i have it set to 0.75 sharpening, and 0.17 ignore film grain. This is how the game looks

While it still looks blurry and disgusting compared to MSAA 2X, the framerate is much better and there's far less visual glitches. There's one that i noticed though, and that is when you move your mouse quickly, Arthur's hair briefly does some wierd glitching but it's not easy to notice. I hope that someday Rockstar decides to add more AA options.

EDIT: I'm a retard. Seems like Nvidia's sharpening does not even work while the game is set to VULKAN. I tried to change it to DX12, just to see how it runs (runs kinda worse for me, some wierd glitching like trees swaying extremely fast, but for some reason the game looks more colorful? wierd sh*t if you ask me), and instantly i noticed that now it's way sharper.

Now i think that 0.70 might be a bit too much. Maybe 0.50? Try what seems good to you guys.

Exactly what I did too. Set TAA to Medium, FXAA to On and bumped up image sharpening via the control panel.

Or use Reshade 4.4.2 SMAA+Lumasharpen. Even better results

Yep that would probably be even better, but i play Online every now and then and i don't like risking bans.

I’m confused, why are you guys recomending turning FXAA on on top of TAA? Isn’t FXAA super blurry and would make things even messier?

Seems like it does not, see the edit. Something f*cky is going on with this game, i think. I turned it off and disabled the Nvidia sharpening again, turned the game on, and it's less colorful again.

Is it just the time of day? Could enabling Nvidia Sharpening enable some color filter aswell? Also look at the mountains on the left. In the first pic they look different than in the second pic.

Edit: Yep, Nvidia Sharpening really adds some color filter with it. Sucks.

Edit2: After i set it from 0.50 to 0.40, the colors seem to be back to normal again. What the f*ck.

No, Nvidias sharpening currently only works with DX applications.

It's normal for some Control Panel effects to not work with Vulkan games and it's not an RDR2 issue. Vulkan isn't used by that many games yet and most of the things the NV Control Panel forces are DirectX and OpenGL only.

Looks like this at 0.40 Sharpening and 0.17 Grain. Colors seem to be back to normal. Wierd.

True, it's not a game specific issue. Nvidias support website says that sharpening for Vulcan and open GL support will come at a later date.

Thanks for the work so far playing with this. This was a sweet spot for my rig as well and I'm getting a lot better image quality playing with these settings on my 1080 Ti. Playing with the .40 and .17 right now.

Really weird that it changes the colour! Thanks for your effort - trying .40 and .17

what does the film grain setting actually do?

No idea. Here's another pic. I don't think that it can get better than this.

so .40 is preferred and zero colour loss? I'll give it a try, thanks!

This is a quote from a graphics guide I found online.

"Unlocked Volumetric Raymarch Resolution: this will all depend on your internal resolution: the higher you climb the harder this hits. It’s an on/off toggle, and at 1440 it cost me close to seven frames on especially cloudy days. Unless you are looking directly at the edges of the clouds, you can safely leave this off and notice no difference."

TAA looks great when you stand still without any movements. So screenshot will always look good. The biggest issue and bad thing with TAA are when you start to move, every thing looks blurry.

But yes, Nvidia’s settings help a bit. I use it aswell. But my dream would be to use TAA and keep it as clear and nice as it is when you stand still also when you start to move around.

At the moment, I dont think there is any good AA, not sure if that will change over time with RDR2. I can only dream.

Stayed on sharpness 0.25

I think 0.40-0.50 is too sharp. Looks strange.

yeah hope they fix the AA somehow...the blurriness kills it for me too.

Since the game works better for me with Vulcan and you can only use Nvidia's sharpening tool with DX applications I've been doing some testing. TAA medium with FXAA turned on in the game + FXAA enhancement at 8x with 4x super sample transparency in the control panel takes away a lot of the blurriness with no noticeable loss of fps compared to just simply using the games settings. It's not as good as the sharpening tool with DX12 but it's better than default.

I tried at 0.40 and is still blurry but a 0.60, 0.70 is fine

Thanks man!!!! The game now looks so much better (TAA high no FXAA) and improves performance

Now the threes and water are flickering but if i change to vulcan no (doing this i lost the taa sharpness. what a mess)

I’m playing on Vulkan and the image sharpening is working for me (Nvidia ingame Game Filter on ALT+F3). Looks very nice with TAA on Medium and Game Filter sharpening at 50%. Why would I turn on FXAA on top of this? (Honest question)

Everytime I use TAA it makes all the trees and bushes look like a painting and I see visual noise everywhere when I'm not moving.

I can confirm that Nvidia sharpening works on Vulcan through the Geforce experience , but not directly through the control panel if Geforce isn't installed. I'm glad too, because I get about 10 or so more fps with Vulcan than I do with DX12 and DX12 has some weird glitching going on for me. I'm now using TAA medium with the slider maxed + FXAA + the Nvidia sharpening and it looks fantastic, crystal clear.

Edit: Also to answer your question... FXAA doesn't take up many resources at all, it just adds a little bit extra AA at almost no extra cost.

The Geforce Experience Sharpen filter is using about 2-3 fps depending on the location and lighting.
