Where is the Online Element?

Online made basically feels like an expanded single player for me. They have released a lot of collectibles, bounty hunter, etc etc etc.

But where is the source of player population and hype that draws you in like other popular online games? Is there something I am missing? Most activities that can be done with other players feel pretty weak, there is nothing really pulling players together.

What is it about online that you do that makes you play with other people that keeps you engaged?

Bounty hunts that have 2+ targets and 5 star legendary bounties are fun too. Also in trading, posse members all get a nice cash payout for a full distant delivery. Other than that it's just finding your own fun out there. A vast majority of people aren't really looking for a shared experience, they just want to exist by themselves in the Online world as they did in the single player experience. I think the game is more geared towards that play style at the moment but we're only a year in and I'm sure that will change as time goes on.

I am that person. I wanted, the single player experience with a custom built character. Yes - more of this.

I was only level 15 until Frontier Pursuits and was playing since day 1.  Besides the story missions and stranger missions almost all there was to do way PVP garbage.

Since Frontier Pursuits I am now level 79, basically all solo, and climbing everyday.

I'm kinda with @Rev. Gnash. I like interaction with people to an extent online with cooperative stuff even though I have a love for PvP as well, but I really don't mind a single player experience with a custom character. I guess thats why I like games like saints row.

Good for you. Congratulations on making such progress. As for me I am playing online since day 1 to meet and interact with people. I have days where I rather be by myself but in general I like the interaction no matter what it is. I loathe how seemingly all there is on people minds is collecting the same items over and over for cash, just because that is the best method. What about having fun ? Getting some random encounters with some unknown ? Make friends perhaps Do you actually enjoy this repetive grind that is collecting ? I surely don't. Exact same reason why I f*cked of from GTA Online. Grind grind grind. And then ya wonder when y'all bored out of ya mind two weeks after an update.

Whatever...

I feel like the answer to this quest depends in what all of us seek while in an online environment. What exactly are you missing? I get popup messages invitations to various mods that ppl are playing, although I would like to see the events really taking in the actual map instead of an instanced mode, that would makes me join more even If i had to ride to the location, because I don't wanna loose the carcasses on my horse everytime I join an event.

I think the game has pretty good balance between solo and multi type play online. It's easy to join up with other players in pvp or missions. You can easily posse up with friends or even randos if you want to take some risk. You can do a solo local delivery or get some people to cover a wagon for a long haul. You solo a single bounty or join up with others and go for the multi bounty mission. Seems to me the game caters to online loners and people who like to interact as well. It's best to find a group to play with and form a posse, in my humble opinion.

As for people who grind, well, some people just enjoy grinding. There were plenty of money grinding crews on GTAO who did nothing but sales all day freaking long. They got like 900 million dollars saved up, and they want more. Not my thing but I'm just saying some peeps are like that too.

I find that RDRO caters to a pretty broad swath of gamer types. Some people for instance are buying the PC version just to get the photo editor, because they like to just ride around and find nice shots to take. So there you have it.

I've had plenty of fun interacting with people, for example giving a stranger a pelt, or receiving a pelt from a stranger; helping players in random encounters and gang hideouts, even just a wave while walking in town or drinking in the saloon. At the same time, I've been nice to other players only to have them shoot me or my horse with explosive rounds or lasso me.

The fun factor all depends on who you meet. Sometimes I have very memorable and awesome experiences, other times I am reminded why it would be nice to have solo or invite-only lobbies.

I'd say more than anything there's not really a formula to it, or one mode that makes players come together. Its really the free-form of it all, that can be fun and memorable when an encounter with another player goes well.

Of course, there's also times when I have a goal to accomplish, and at that point I avoid player interactions in order to focus on that goal (hunting, grinding, getting to a post office etc.).

Mostly I prefer playing solo, though I have a crew I run sales and bounties with.

The odd occasion when I meet a random, when its a positive encounter, is golden.

Token example: I always spawn in Ambarino. One day I landed in the snow, shot 3 passing deer and noticed a blue dot nearby. A low level.

He ran away at first, stopped, then probably wondered why I was whistling and running after him with a 3* carcass, which I promptly put on his horse.

He checked it, turned and waved at me. We then hunted together for a bit, collecting squirrels, rabbits, you name it.

Eventually we parted ways near Big Valley with another wave goodbye and we disappeared into the world, continuing our journey.

I don't mind the odd PVP, but that is the kind of shared online experience I find most satisfying.

Yeah agree with this post. I think it definitely depends on who you meet and what you are doing when you meet these people. PvP is some BS right now, but with the right people it can dope and it can suck when you meet others. It also depends on what you consider an "interaction" with people. Some people its jumping on the mic and literally talking to people online while doing activities with them whether you guys are having friendly or non-friendly interaction, but I feel most people would say just your average encounter with the player not mic'd up and you guys generally are having a good enough time to stick around for a while and maybe send friend requests before its all over or having a terrible enough time where you leave a session or move somewhere else.

Some of my best experiences have came from players that were not mic'd up. We were in the lobby on a series and I met one of the players through a pretty tough match we had together on the same team..... my team ended up with the L, but he sent me a friend request anyway, because I still had a decent enough performance to appear competent and from there we played together on teams and were riding out the playlist as it moved through tthe several different modes. This was back in the beta days and we played together and had a ball up until maybe 2 months ago and he has never been online since.

Some of the most cooperative players I've met are players that.....don't communicate verbally online...they just know what to do and how to do.

Co-op missions, but only those away from the public lobby. Though I don't do bounty hunting but I love the LeClerk missions with randoms and friends alike for varying results and fun. Need many more and heists to come sooner than later as it is a bit repetitive after long. Bit of hunting, fishing and collecting inbetween and I'm all set.

But with freemode, as we're forced to share a session whatever our playstyle. I find myself deliberately avoiding any player that comes near me as I'm not out there for the potential fighting, so don't risk wasting either of our time with engaging others out there. Plus I don't want any ability cards so PvP is pretty much off limits all round because of that anyway. :)

Playing the game daily since beta, I don't see multiple hordes of posses riding around. Most of the time I see solo dots just doing their thing. That's not to say I haven't seen groups, but on the scales of observation solo players come off as the larger demographic.

Actually, it is nothing about "online" in the case of this game (or GTAO.) :

It is just the characters who level, get better, have more variety and more stuff to do, than in the single player game.

If they let me do the same thing, but not online, I'd be doing that in both of them. In fact I DO that in GTAO; "I have a sudden need to test my NAT.... "(on Xbox One, which causes all players to drop in GTAO, making for good delivery/car stealing/whatever mission things), too bad that doesn't work in this ;)

If everyone was cool, online would be great. I play from a "do unto others" perspective, which is why I've never messed up someone's mission/delivery/etc.

Also, online is actually a DETRIMENT in this game since the stupid camp problems/hunting problems are worse with more players.

Exactly, this seems to be the opposite. Its about your profile, not interactions with players.
