RDR2 PC First Impressions & Reactions

Howdy fellas

Its been about 6 hours since RDR2 landed on PC, so what are your first impressions and reactions to the story and graphics so far?

I can see people have had a few problems with their hardware handling the beast, but we've got plenty of topics about that, so, over to you.

Game runs OK for me atm. Playing in 1440p with a couple of low settings, a few medium and a few high, msaa x2, no other AA.

rtx2080 super, 8700k, 32gb 2666 ram, ssd.

Snow area were better than the green area. At the snow area I had 61-90 fps. In green/forest I have 55-70.

but the game looks very good at those settings! Some buggy snow trees and shadows looks a bit wierd sometimes.

IMO there's not much difference between the drivers, atleast for me. Guy on Reddit said about a 20 FPS increase in-game, i'd love to check that out with the old driver installed but sadly, Nvidia's FPS counter decided to not work when Vulcan is on. In the benchmark the difference was 2 FPS on avarage. https://imgur.com/a/pXfMQaN

Going by the eye, the FPS surely is more than 60 (70/80?) on a mix of medium/high and ultra so i'm happy.
These are my settings: https://imgur.com/a/LPuTx11

GPU - RTX 2070 Super

CPU - Ryzen 7 2700X

RAM - 16GB 3466MHz

OS - Windows 10, latest update

Hopefully they fix the crashes and other issues before the game lands on Steam in December.

Not sure if this is right thread to ask but anyone have experience doing charge backs? I'm guessing rockstar will ban my account which would mean I lose access to gta v which is on steam. Maybe max payne 3 too if that needs rockstar account on steam, not sure if it does.

What about my xbox 360 games. Would I still be able to launch gta iv and the dlc for example? red dead 1 too? I replay these 360 games at least once a year so losing them would suck.

2080 super

9700k

16gb ram 3200

And I can't get 60fps even on low settings at 1080p. I need a refund

What you need is to wait atleast 24 hours.

Something isn't right there...  2070 super, i7-8700, 32GB RAM

The lowest I've seen my FPS drop is 62 at 1080p, mostly hovering between 73-80, and that's with every setting on high using Vulkan.

Edit: I should note this is in story mode, haven't touched Online if that's where you're having trouble.

Seems to be different for everyone else. For me, i got a tiny framerate increase on Vulcan. Someone on Reddit claims they got 20 more FPS.

Digital Foundry recent tweet:

Just quickly: we've only had access to Red Dead 2 on PC since it unlocked earlier today. Myself and
@dachsjaeger are on the case. I'm working on initial thoughts on scalability and reaching 60fps. Alex is spending more time on the console head-to-heads, optimised settings etc.

Looks and plays great for me so far.  Using a 2080ti at 4k and pretty much every setting on high.  I don't have a frame counter running but in-game benchmark had it around 58 average fps and it seems smooth while roaming around the open world in single player.

The draw distance is phenomenal and the rest of the graphics quality is a clear step up from the already impressive Xbox One X performance.

Performance-wise, first impressions could be a lot better. Game generally feels less stable than GTA V did at launch. Strange crashes when changing simple settings (Borderless). Odd graphical bugs. Some of this stuff is typical launch day fare, other things seem seriously wrong.

Hope it's something that can be patched. I'm going to try to enjoy the game as is, playing at roughly 40 FPS average on a 980 with a i7 4790, High settings.

You must be doing something wrong because Nvidia said you could get 60 fps at 4k on medium-high with a 2080ti. The ti is only like 10% better than the Super.

At 1080p you should be getting way over 60 fps on high.

I feel for you. You deserve way more than low & medium at 1440p with that card. With your system overall, really. Hope patches improve things for ya.

Remember when Rockstar released the requirements and we all thought that the game would be super well optimized. Lol, great times

Why are you on DX12? You've got an AMD card, switch to Vulcan and make use of it.

Yeah this is story and the ingame benchmark. I have not played online.

What am I doing wrong though? The reddit megathread is full of people on high end systems getting awful performance. I have played multiple games on this rig. The latest being AC Odyssey which is a demanding game. That game runs absolutely solid on everything at max. What could I even be doing wrong. I've spent almost 3 hours tweaking settings. Getting sick of it and just dropping everything to low was my final straw. I've gotten sick to death of looking at the graphics options menu because 80% of my time was spent in it. I'm contacting my bank to start the chargeback process tomorrow.

This alone is a statement by itself that the optimisation is absolute garbage, because AC:O used as an example of how bad modern games can run without actual reasons to back it up apart from being a bad game. Let that sink in for a moment, because in every hardware test AC:O is an outlier with the worst performance in comparison to other games.

Beats me, it could be one of a billion things. If the problem is on their end then it probably ends up patched and fixed.

Frankly these issues seem standard for launch day on PC for lots of titles. If you aren't willing to live with this, console is your better bet. Otherwise for titles like this, launch day is not always reliable on PC, just because the game has to play on such a wide variety of hardware.

That's the best solution to this crap, because at least you will not be worried about the issues. You may re-purchase the thing later when it will work like it should. I have 8700k and 1080 Ti and it looks like I'm not playing this game for a long time.

The game is just as good as I thought it would be, a big improvement from the PS4 Pro version. I’ve only had my game crash once and that was in the first cutscene when I started the game. I expected high 40s-50 fps at 1080p with all high settings with my setup and I was correct in that guess, I am waiting for the new 3000 series nvidia gpus next year and I’ll then build a new pc capable of running this in 4k ultra at 60fps+. One issue I ran into minutes before having to leave for work was in my online freeroam session in valentine, where for no clear reason my frames dropped to 12-13 fps, not sure the reason why but hopefully should get fixed by the time I get back.

Everything on High (around 70%) and Ultra, running smooth 60fps, only a few stutter here and there (every 20 minutes I’d say)

When you spend sh*t a ton of money on hardware and in the end you get 30 FPS on medium:

Well, that is just sad. I took whole week of the work just to enjoy RDR, which is not running well. Playable, but not fun. I was hoping much more after greatly optimized GTA V. Bad Rockstar, bad...

I am still in the snow area and the first impression is fantastic game. Very atmospheric and it feels more real and heavier than other games thats great.

Finding the right graphical settings was a bit of work...
