Suggestions for New RDR2 PC Players?

Recommended Posts

Spider-Vice

Some of you are seasoned players of the Heartlands and the world of Red Dead, both off and on-line, and there is no one better than you to give us new PC players some suggestions on how to best play and experience the game and its story.

So, keeping  it COMPLETELY SPOILER FREE, what are your suggestions for new players of Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC?

1. Missions which icons are white can disappear, do them before the ones in yellow.

2. Take good advantage of Chapter 2-3-4, stay within them for as long as you can, they're the best, and the next chapters won't feel the same and they will make you want to rush the rest of the game. (Chapters 2 and 3 especially are the absolute best to stay in)

3. Playing without the HUD is incredibly immersive if you got a good sense of direction.

x2. Chapter 3 is my favorite.

Myself and some other user said it on the other thread, so I'll say it again.

The map is completely open from the start, much like GTA V, but for immersion purposes you're better off sticking to the state/county that you're currently in until the story brings you elsewhere.

I highly recommend doing the gang-member side-missions as they become available. Really helps expand on the relationships Arthur has with everyone. Great character expositions.

Not exactly like the "I Know You" missions in RDR1, but there are a slight handful of optional missions that hold better context during the story and add a whole lot to it. Like seriously, I'm honestly surprised some of these are optional. I'll list only the mission names here as they are spoiler-free, and not have to risk spoiling anything yourself by searching for such a list online. You'll see them pop up on the pause menu map as you progress through the game, so when you do, go ahead and do them.

  • All "Money Lending and Other Sins" missions
  • We Loved Once and True I, II, and III
  • The Course of True Love I, II, III, IV, and V
  • Help a Brother Out
  • Brothers and Sisters, One and All
  • Fatherhood and Other Dreams I and II
  • Do Not Seek Absolution I and II
  • Of Men and Angels I and II
  • Archaeology for Beginners
  • Honor, Amongst Thieves
  • Mrs. Sadie Adler, Widow I and II

I bolded the ones that I'm sure most people will agree are pretty important and add more to the story. Read as: "Why are these optional in the first place?" The rest aren't too bad but you should still do them. A couple of these actually don't appear on the map when they're available, and are only made available when someone in a mission asks you for help. As a general rule, just always say yes (why would you turn down a mission anyways?).

Son of Dutch

Make sure to get Schofield Revolver for free when you reach chapter 2 as it will unlock to be purchased in the game in later chapters!
No spoilers-

Do the google search for the meaning of deer in native american culture, it will help you understand more deeply some aspects of the story.

I think the most important one is really take your time.

Most of us will have to will to just rush and explore, I've done that the first time, but just hold back it's worth it.

Also for "wolf" depending on what kind of Honour you will be playing ;)

Does anything you do in single player affect your online character?

In other words am I safe to go straight into online before completing the story...or will ruin the exploration etc. and put me at a disadvantage?

I bought this game primarily to play online with my dad.

Thanks.

Some points for me:

1) As people have said, don’t rush. Explore the local area and hang around your camp with the gang. If you blast through the story missions there is tons of stuff you will miss.

2) As soon as you get the Legendary Animal map in the story, hunt the Legendary Buck and craft the Buck Antler Trinket. This is really important for hunting later as it raises the chances of getting a perfect pelt.

3) After 2), hunt what you need to craft the legend of the east satchel in chapter 2. It’s seriously worth it.

4) If you’re thinking about going for the gold rush achievement, do so from the beginning. It’s much harder on replays as you get put back to basic stats and weapons.

5) Small tip, but once you’ve done 3), kill bears, alligators, wolves and cougars and skin them regularly for big game meat. Collect mint, oregano and thyme when you see it to season them as they will give you gold cores. Eat before starting missions to get the benefits. Also collect Indian tobacco whenever you see it to craft into Potent Snake Oil.

6) If I can shamelessly plug my guide, for those who want to get 100%, it could easily take over 160 hours of non stop play. You have 90 challenges to complete that must be done in sequence. But if you have the right ones active at the right time, some become much easier to get during story missions. Also getting the right collectibles together when you’ll be in the correct area will save bags of time. Check this out:
