Will abstain from touching those drivers until I play the game with my current setup first. You never know with these things.

well, considering performance of past rockstar titles on their 'recommended' settings, I say I trust nvidia

I could run GTA V just fine on high on a really old GPU so yeah. If Xbox One X runs RDR2 on Medium, it's still gonna look great. Xbox One X has a 1060 equivalent at 4K30, so 1080p60 should be doable with Medium-High. I think Ultra is gonna be ridiculous on purpose, like extremely high resolution lighting and such.

Rockstar can make everyone calm down with a simple tweet but NO

Depends on what kind of tweet, the 1PM one is going to suck balls. I expected no more sleep before RDR2 ;)

but not so long anyway.

nvidia settings are usually bs...just lower shadows in game and gives you a sh*tload of fps with minimal to 0 graphical impact in game.

Lowering shadows have minimal to zero graphical impact? Shadows are very important and most modern GPU/games handle shadows well anyway. You won't get a huge boost like you used to in older games.

Volumetric lighting and fog and cloud settings will be the ones to lower to have minimal impact on graphics and get a performance boost.

GTA V performed at 50-60fps more or less at high/very high settings on a GTX 660

Remember people in open worlds specially..the first video settings you need to lower for better FPS is shadows... go medium then low etc.  has the least Image quality impact but the most FPS  impact in the game. never forget! SHADOWS.

volumetric lighting at lower settings will look plain ugly, blocky like

According to UserBenchmark, the 2060 has about 20-21 FPS over the 980. I'm good with a variable, 40-60 framerate if I get to keep things on high or near-reasonable max. By reasonable max, I mean minus all the future-proofing advance settings that kick things into NASA super computer territory.

never found any diference in image quality between ultra and medium, but the fps diference is abysmal.  (you only notice the diference on screenshots)

Rockstar launcher doesn't have a native FPS counter? I can't find the option

what fps software do you guys recommend that doesn't affect the game performance?

You can enable frame counter in Geforce Experience if you have Nvidia card.

“If, however, you still wish to run at High across the board at 4K, at 60 FPS, consider using our new upscaling and sharpening technology to upscale gameplay to 4K from 3264x1836 or 2880x1620, for a sizeable performance improvement, and only a minimal reduction in image clarity”.

I'm sure Digital Foundry and Hardware Unboxed will give us the best graphics settings to boost performance at minimal loss on graphics. Keep an eye out on their videos.

I love how they make it sound like you're f*cked if your GPU isn't listed. As if the 1080 Ti isn't going to kick this game's ass like any 2080 would.

Some past titles, perhaps. But with GTA V they produced an extremely solid, well-optimized port that still ran relatively smoothly on 5-7 year old hardware and was playable on 8-10 year old hardware.

Also, don't forget that the 2060 is only a little better than the 1070, worse than the 1080, and much worse than the 1080ti. The only reason Nvidia are recommending their newest series is that, well, that's the one they're trying to sell you, and if they sell just 20 or 30 new cards because of people fretting over RDR's performance on PC in advance, that's good for their bottom line.

in any event, rtx 2060 is about 13% faster than my 1660 ti

maybe overclocking can help me a little...

wouldnt be surprised if they made the performance on the 10 series worse just to get more sales on the 20 series.

Low res shadows look very bad especially on character faces. You won't notice tree and buildings shadows, yeah because they don't need to look good anyway. But shadows on characters are very important and cowboy hats means you need good looking shadows on character faces.

I doubt it. I believe the 2000 series received criticism for not being enough of a jump from the 1000 series. So they released the Supers and now those are widely considered the "real" RTX lineup. :p

we will see but if thats the case its a small sacrifice for way better fps,  lighting on the other hand its a big as IQ sacrifice imo.

Says November 5th on GMG, but that makes sense since it'd be 1 AM CET on the 5th, if we're going by the GTA V PC release date.
