Novice Role Items - are they mandatory; can you max level without any of them?

I see there are discounts on them this week. But I wonder if they are mandatory or they are only making your job easier (but you can level up to the max level of each role even without them). All in all - are they useful and should I get them?

As far as Collector goes, yes. It's slower, obviously, but you could manage without thr shovel.

Bounty Hunter, I believe so as well. I'm not playing that role very fanatically, but I've reached level 14 without picking up the bolas or fancy lasso.

Trader, I can't even think of what the novice pickups are right now, so I'm guessing that one as well. Though I do recommend the medium delivery wagon at some point.

And how screwed are you if you play alone? (nice profile pic btw)

Definitely get the enhanced lasso, I managed to keep 4/6 tied up while my brother went to chase after the fleeing one; they'd have broken out quickly with the standard lasso, but the enhanced kept them nice and tight. Plus it's beneficial for legendary bounties, less chance of them cutting free.

Also the shovel, you definitely need the shovel if you're doing the collectors role. Can't get by without it.

Interesting - you contradict with the first reply, any thoughts on that?

A lot of the stuff you have to get needs a shovel to dig up, so you'd be stuck going after eggs and bottles which isn't that beneficial imo. With the shovel you'd have more options for way more XP.

That's the answer I was looking for - if there's even one thing locked behind an item - I'm getting it.

Shovel is basically mandatory for Collector, same for metal detector. Think of this way for those two, Collector at level 0 with no shovel or metal detector gives access to basically 1/3rd of the role, with the shovel it's 2/3rd's, with the detector it's 3/3. Having all three fully unlocks the roles potential, which is the best money maker and best exp in the game.

For BH the Reinforced Lasso is a straight up upgrade so it's worth having but you can live without it if you really, really don't have the cash.

For Trader none of the novice items are needed, the stew pot is nice but unless you use camp a lot (and with a posse), it's practically useless. Nice to have just for cosmetic reasons though. That being said, one of the daily Role challenges for Trader is sometimes to eat some stew from the pot or cook the daily stew.

Thanks. My camp dog is called Mr. Threepwood.

I played the whole thing alone, ot is possible.

However, while the other replies contradict me there is some merit to them. The shovel really helps speed things along.

And if you're going after more than one bounty at once I can see the reinforced lasso come in handy.

All these things make life easier indeed, though the bolas are bollocks I think, but I wouldn't say they are mandatory.

I do stand by my initial reply: it can be done without.

Case in point: without the shovel you can, at the very least, still collect tarot cards. Loot collectibles off dead folk. Every find nets you XP. 100, I think.

I did Collector on the side. Made it to 20 just by finding stuff, sent in one collection total.

Keeping a single bounty nice and quiet on the back can be done by knocking them out before hogtieing (how the f*ck do you spell that?) them.

Trading is just that. If you want you can shlep back and forth with the little cart and leave it at that.

The stew pot is a novice item, isn't it? Nobody needs a stew pot, if you ask me, especially when playing alone.

Either way, it's more about how much time you wanna spend on getting 20.

If you simply want to level up the roles to 20 then yea sure you can spend $0 on equipment and grind what you've got. If you want to get the most out of the rules then all three roles have equipment you need. Wagons for the Trader and BH, shovel + metal detector for Collector.

This equipment will greatly help you, 50/100 load deliveries with Trader are much more valuable than a 25 load, bounties with a wagon make 6 man bounties possible and make 2+ man bounties when solo easier as you don't have to find a horse. Collector with the shovel/detector, like I said, transforms the role into the best exp and money in the game. It is possible to do 1-70 in the battle pass and 1-20 in the Collector role in 2 days or less with the metal detector and shovel combo, it's also possible to make over $4k a day if you follow guides.

I’m level twenty on bounty and collector. Didn’t need any bounty upgrades to do so. As for collector, get the shovel and metal detector as soon as possible otherwise you’ll be passing a ton of collectibles along the way.

Non Funkable Token

Shovel and metal detector are key for the collector role. The rest aren't.

Big delivery wagon is key for trader. The bigger the shipment, the bigger the price per unit sold. The rest (stew pot, hunting wagon, etc) aren't. Hunting wagon can be helpful to store perfect carcasses here and there, but far from mandatory.

As for BH, only reinforced lasso makes a difference, tho. Bolas and bounty wagon are a complete waste of money.

OK, but how many hours a day - this makes the whole difference. 😂

Well quite a fair bit obviously lol but it is the best and easiest exp in the game. Even more casual players sped through the Outlaw Pass in a few days because of the metal detector. Collector is by far away the quickest role to hit level 20 with if you get those two items.

The Reinforced Lasso is not mandatory. Just knock out your target by tackling them and beating them while straddled on them and tie them up immediately with the normal Lasso. They wont wake up and thus cannot escape.

I've had enough bounty targets accidentally die even as I kick them careful as can be that I'd still recommend the reinforced lasso to anybody who plans on taking bounties regularly.

If you're just starting out, with only some collectibles, you could spend several hours trying to collect everything, and that's with using a map.

Even if you've been doing it awhile, and are only missing 3-4 items per collection, you could easily spend 4 hours getting the rest.
