The Hollick thing is very strange. Surely he would have researched who he was about to work for and realised what a big deal GTA was? He then could have at least tried to negotiate himself a better contract. Or turned it down.

100K is a lot of money for an unknown actor. The thing is they don't expect this amount of work when they sign the papers.

I think it's just going to be the console announcement, since Microsoft showed the new XBOX by surprise, probably won't have any big game-related annoucement.

I think those comments about Trump etc. were misinterpreted. There's no evidence he even actually mentioned Trump. 

 

I know this has been discussed dozens of times before and to be fair the article was ambiguous. But to try to clear this up, here is what Dan Houser said in the source interview with GQ:

 

"It's really unclear what we would do with it (GTA6), let alone how upset people would get with whatever we did... Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant, and very angry. It's scary but it's also strange, and yet both of them seem occasionally to veer towards the absurd. It's hard to satirize for those reasons. Some of the stuff you see is straightforwardly beyond satire. It would be out of date within two minutes, everything is changing so fast."

 

The context of that comment was all about RDR2, the interview was in October 2018 to showcase that game and its development. He didn't actually say anything specifically about Trump at all, the GQ journalist added that angle to draw readers in at the start of the article. It was maybe a slightly misleading way to interpret Dan's line of thought. 

 

I think Dan was contrasting the "thankful" luxury of being able to develop RDR2 as a game that is culturally 100 years old, versus the fraught difficulty (if not impossibility) of successfully writing a R*-style game based in the current cultural environment. 

 

To me this doesn't mean that there won't be a GTA6 release until Trump has left office - if you think about it, the logic of Dan's comment would mean that GTA6 can never come out (or even to start being developed) for as long as political division and controversy exists, and that turbulence isn't going away anytime soon no matter who is President. 

 

It just means that GTA6 won't be based in the here-and-now. It tells us nothing about when it will be announced / released.

Plenty of people, me included. Its why I hated IV with a passion. V wasn't perfect, but at least Rockstar did try to bring back some fun, old school GTA ideas, and even managed to introduce ideas that were totally new to the franchise.

If Dan is not going to release a GTA in the current era because of Trump, so he's never going to release another GTA. Whether the next  POTUS is liberal or conservative, the political divide will only get worse, the same with the political warfare on Twitter.

If I had to guess, Houser was merely lamenting the current political climate with regard to how it effects what people will and will not find funny in a hotbed of political landmines and a historically unprecedented level of divisiveness between liberals and conservatives.

Yep, compared to RDR2. Also he doesn't do interviews very often so maybe he isn't quite as media-savvy as he could be when giving a hot-take. Talking about controversy sometimes invites more controversy. He wasn't thinking about how his comments could be misinterpreted / reinterpreted.

And since we're talking about CES, turns out that Ivanka Trump is somewhat controversially one of this year's Keynote Speakers!

 

Wouldn't it be weird and ironic if Dan Houser or similar turns up to announce GTA6 literally in front of a Trump?

A release in 2020 is not even remotely likely for sure, but some sort of official teaser / unveil of Six is a plausible possibility in the coming year.

I think something similar to the last few major announcements will happen: Rockstar will give vague clues (like how they changed their social media profile picture to red before RDR2's announcement), then they will show the logo and create a countdown to when the first trailer or first info drops. Then we can get this hype-train supersonic.
