It's impossible for them to stick with realistically western themed game, they just can't do it.

Realistic cowboy games don't sell Microtransactions. Its quite obvious that R* was forced to try and make RDO a clone of GTAO by T2 because T2 have no clue what RDR's fans actually want. It would not surprise me if that was what the delay was about and why Online launched so poorly and in "BETA" with so little content.

The players that a laid back Western game would attract are quite happy to spend all day hunting and thus have no reason to buy Gold Bars which is a big no-no for T2.

HBO present's Deadwood Online. That's all I'm looking for at the end of the day.

I think it's simpler than that, even:

Single-player R* titles: Sam, Dan & co. make ridiculously lavish movie-inspired hobby-projects, as they always have.

R* online multiplayer spin-offs: Sam, Dan & co. move on to the next project, and whoever's left holding the baby has one simple instruction: chase whatever trends keep resonating with the majority of players (read: kids) to keep that post-launch microtransaction revenue flowing until the next title launches.

To be honest, I think it's less about T2 dictating this stuff from the top down, as it is the Housers not really caring about Online other than as a money stream - if GTAO and RDO are bringing in megabucks non-stop, then there's no reason for T2 to start demanding that RDR2, GTA VI, Bully 2, etc. have microtransactions and the like in their single-player modes.

In other words, GTAO and RDO have been sacrificed on the altar of unlimited* profit, to ensure that the Housers have free reign to do their single-player games their way - which is good news for fans of traditional R* single-player experiences, but not so much for folks who feel that R*'s "living online worlds" could be so much more if R* actually treated them as such. :turn:

*ignoring that the single-player games alone make more than some blockbuster movies, and on a per-game basis outstrip other companies' sales figures for entire franchises - it's not like R* can't keep the lights on without their perpetually-monetised online games...

Not a perfect analogy. A movie takes a year or two to make, and actual filming is conducted over a matter of months. That means, you pay the people on the project for that time and no further.

Game developers can stay on well after the build is finished, and you have to keep paying them somehow.

I appreciate the overall point you're making, but this isn't something R* really need to consider when their last two titles, combined, have made more than $6Bn and counting.

Well, only if that project has post-launch support - it's been an all-too-common criticism of AAA publishers that a game will come out, and a large portion of the dev team will be let go, because the next thing isn't lined up (or in some cases, entire studios have been shuttered). And it's not like there isn't 'post-launch support' of a kind for movies, if you think about it - things like getting the VFX team to polish up unused footage/sequences for home release bonus features (or even something like an extended edition in theatres). And that's not counting things like the Marvel movies, where they're much more like, say, Ubisoft, where there's folk working seamlessly from one thing to the next.

...and I've just been ninja'd by @ALifeOfMisery, but yeah, that's what I was getting at: GTA V made back around three times ($745 million) what it cost to make ($200+ million) in just 15 days, and then proceeded to make billions over the next half-decade, in no small part due to GTAO microtransactions. Even aside from the budget for RDR2, and all the post-launch ongoing development costs for both GTAO and RDO, I'm pretty sure that kind of money could cover all that and more (and still have billions to spare!), to the point where it's arguable that RDO didn't need to have microtransactions in the first place (let alone adding things like a battle pass to drive more players to keep spending on RDO). I mean, I get it - there's nothing stopping them milking every game for every penny. But it's not like any of that is necessary - and so it's all the more frustrating when the quality of the experience starts to suffer as a result.

Mask with 2 Potent Tonics on each side so you can chug them all the time and do the famous Clint Eastwood move: infinite Dead Eye. After that just use super authentic and balanced explosive arrows.

After all of my b*tching yesterday, what you just said here kind of hits the nail on the head for me.

If these exact masks had been released in GTAO as part of this year's Halloween festivities their inclusion wouldn't have caused ripple. Alongside the all of the wacky, crazy and, frankly, ridiculous cosmetic content in GTAO players would have gone to Vespucci, paid $50k a pop and thought nothing about them. Which is precisely why they are so aesthetically jarring in RDO.

These are extremely special hats, you know. One does not simply tip one of these. Really really special hats, these. I tells ya.

Watch this game turn into steam punk in a few months...

Which in R* language a few months equals to “in a few weeks or so”

T2 is a publicly traded company. This means they have shareholders who demand constant growth, even though the market is finite. The gaming market is huge, but still finite. So squeezing every penny out of their audience IS necessary.

That's why gta online is such a grind fest and has ray guns and flying cars and bikes. I didn't like the direction gta has taken. So I retired from gta.

I do come back occasionally to check out a new dlc. I completely skipped the arena wars dlc.

Standard Deluxe 59

I say y'all have two years before the armored Conestoga wagon with dual side mounted gatling guns is added. Then maybe a year before a literal flying Pegasus is added.

"For $4000 you can buy your own private train, complete with a parlour coach with customizable interiors, as well as a combat flatcar with default Maxim guns (upgradeable to cannons). Visit any train station to spawn it."

"Uh, question: What happens if two players' trains end up on the same track? Do they crash?"

"That won't be a problem, because if one player spawns a train on a particular route, any other player is prevented from summoning their own."

"You mean, I might not be able to use the train I bought just because someone in the lobby spawned theirs first, the leaves it parked up in Ambarino or somesuch?"

"Yes. Unfortunately you'll have to wait for that player to leave the lobby. But, for 25 gold bars, you can purchase a dynamite mine that will instantly despawn any train that runs over it!"

You found the RDO basic formula, just change "private train" to "private property".

Hilarious!😆

Well, 'necessary' in the sense of 'we'll only consider keeping the game supported with new content if it keeps bringing home the bacon', not 'if people don't spend money on microtransactions, we won't have anything to pay the devs'.

It's pretty staggering that this video is seven years old, and is only more relevant in this age of microtransactions and "recurrent user spending" ( :barf: ):

Wouldn't put it entirely at the feet of T2, either - raking in waaay more money than they actually need to make games is how Sam and Dan both live in luxury mansions, after all...

I suspect Marko Dragic will be introduced at some point which will result in him creating a bunch of insane weapon, gear and possibly even mount enhancements that you can acquire which will turn RDO into the sh*tshow that is now current day GTA Online.
