Grand Theft Auto: Return to Liberty City

Recommended Posts

Disclaimer: If this isn't the appropriate place to write this, please kindly guide me in the right direction and I will take it there.

Reason: A story set after the events of GTAIII in a similar vain to the Stories prequel trilogy (if you count the San Andreas machinima from the special edition as a Stories prequel). I wanted to write this together as best as possible, purely as a writing practice. And I would like to see commenters reply with their ideas for edits and continuations of the story until it reaches a concise conclusion. Maybe someday it could become an advanced mod in the future but I'm happy if nothing comes out of it.

Setting: Liberty City (3D Universe), Somewhere from 2007 to 2012, preferably not 2008 or 2009, however. I'll leave the definitive year up to you guys.

Basic Premise: You take on the role of Ashlyn "Ash" Latore, sister-in-law of Maria Latore, and wife of Gene Latore, Maria's estranged brother and only living family member. Ash moves to Liberty City from Vice City under the alias of "Ashlyn York", in order to make enough money to afford an operation for Gene, as well as, at his request, inform Maria of her brother's deathly ill state. What she is unaware of is the fact that nobody's heard from Maria since 2001. After getting into the wrong car outside the airport, Ash is unwittingly scooped up into the city's criminal ring, giving her a decent source of income as she seeks out Maria.

The game starts out with Ash meeting Toni Cipriani, who saves her from a group of thugs and gives her a weapon, offering to give her work. From there everything is a downward spiral.

Cast:

Ashlyn "Ash" Latore - The central protagonist. Ashlyn grew up in Vice City and has grown weary and jaded of the place in recent years when her husband, Gene, falls ill with a coastal sickness sweeping over the place, she leaves for Liberty City in the hopes of gaining the funds to support his care better. Fearing he won't make it, Gene requests that she locate his sister, Maria, and inform her of his condition, as she's the only family he has left. Ash isn't particularly violent, but she's not afraid to get her hands dirty when necessary. She meets and befriends Toni Cipriani after running into an ambush meant for someone else. Toni gives her work as well as spread word of her abilities, allowing her to get around the city as a hired gun.

Antonio "Toni" Cipriani - Taking over as head of the Leone crime family following Salvatore Leone's death on 2001, Toni proved to be a more devoted leader and is held in much higher esteem. He smoothed things over between the family and Claude, whom he considers a close ally within the city's walls. Toni shows up to take out a group of thugs plotting to assassinate Claude, only to find Ash in his place. After the two take out the gang, they return to Salvatore's home where they establish a partnership, which later develops into a strong friendship. Toni eventually introduces Ash to Leone associate Luigi Goterelli, and demolitions expert, 8-Ball, who give her more work. In this setting, Toni has slimmed down to a point between his appearances in 1998 and 2001, and has grown some facial hair. His mother has died due to a heart attack, leaving him with substantially less stress to deal with.

Claude, "The Messiah" - Claude went silent for a few years following his killing of Catalina in 2001. When he reappeared, he quickly became one of the city's most revered, and feared hitmen. Claude is by no means a just individual, but his talent has given him a Wick-like status, leading people to refer to him as "the Messiah". During his stay in the city, crime on the surface has diminished, while the underground crime ring has become more dangerous and violent as a result. Claude's presence in the game is merely alluded to for the most part, and he only makes a handful of silent appearances as a mission giver for Ash. The game's events are kicked off by her accidentally taking his vehicle, due to it being near identical to her rental car. Claude still uses pagers and occasionally texts, and when giving missions, he silently gives Ash a file before gesturing her away. Claude has a clean-shaven look in this setting, resembling his more youthful appearance from 1992, in addition, he now sports a black overcoat and trilby when out and about, while retaining his green cargo pants. Behind closed doors, he ditches the hat and occasionally wears his classic bomber.

More To Come - Would love to hear your ideas on returning characters and their potential roles in the new story.

Worth Noting - I haven't decided on the fates of ambiguous characters, not even Maria. Nor have I decided on physical changes to Liberty City beyond Love Media no longer being the behemoth that it was in III.

Mission List:

Mission 1: Tenderoni - The game begins with Ash arriving at the Liberty City, narrating the intro. She states her name to be Ashlyn York, and doesn't reveal anything about her reasoning for leaving Vice City, instead explaining it all away as "being tired of all the neon and nostalgia". After she exits the airport, she's guided to look for a car of a specific description, of which there are two that match, one directly in front of her, still running, and one far back in the parking lot. Though the intention is for the player to take the first car, regardless of the car chosen, the opposite one they pick will be the "correct" car. They are then guided towards the apartment complex that Ash had rented ahead of time. After going inside and being taught how saving the game and clothing changes work, she exits and heads to the car. A location is designated on the radar, to which she drives. About half-way there, she hears a beeping version of the song Joyride from GTA1, and discovers a Pager in the glove box, which then tells her to head to a specific location differing from the initial one. Upon arriving, she hears commotion coming from inside a nearby building and peers through the window to spot a group of thugs staging an ambush by using a pager themselves. Frightened, Ash attempts to flee, only to be cornered by two more thugs, who are immediately dispatched by Toni, who reveals that he was coming to assist his friend, Claude after hearing word of the ambush, which was meant for him. Before the two can introduce themselves properly, the rest of the group comes out after them, leading to the first gunplay segment. Toni tosses Ash a gun and she uses it to assist in dispatching the remaining thugs. Toni is impressed by her skills and invites her to his home. The two then head off in that direction. Toni treats Ash to a drink which she (owing to series tradition) politely refuses, and the two exchange introductions. Ash gives Toni Claude's pager so Toni can return it. Toni allows Ash to keep the handgun as payment for the assistance earlier, while promising her work if she ever needs some extra scratch. The two part ways for the time being and the mission concludes.

This is where you guys come in. I want to know what you think and I want to see what ideas you can bring to this concept.

If I'm honest I'd rather see a more traditional format here: try not to write it as if you're telling me what the game is like. Instead write it like a normal story or somewhere in between. That's not a technical correction but a personal preference. I worked on a gta concept once and I wrote the story as somewhere in between - cutscenes were in normal prose and gameplay was kept as brief as possible.

Seeing character bios turns me off. I always skip them. Whatever information is in there should, in best practice, be given to us throughout the story

But that's just an opinion over format.

Welcome to the writers discussion. Good to see you.

Thanks for the input, man, I really appreciate it. The format is very unorthodox but I specifically chose it due to the lack of time I have to dedicate to the idea, hence why I was aiming to get discussion going. It's not so much an advert for the game, but more like a, "Here's a project idea I'm sharing with a group of creators. What would you do to continue it?"

Again, thank you, much. Always nice to be welcomed in. :)
