Dead passengers question

So I noticed sometimes in the game, instead of getting shot and rolling out of the car, sometimes passengers stay in the car with their head down. I think it's when you kill a passenger that's doing a driveby shooting from the window and I noticed they do that when they're in a blown up car. Anyone have more info about this?
