I just completed the original RDR...

ReadDeadStu

When RDR was first released my step-son got it. I had a go on it for about two minutes, gave up - and that was it.

9 years later I just completed my second play through of RDR2. A game I LOVE.

I was always kicking myself that I never played the original. So after hearing it was backward compatible I got an old game of the year edition which also comes with the Undead Nightmare.

I've just done it. Now the weird thing is - cause RDR2 is a prequel this was like playing a direct sequel to that for me. And I have to say it was an incredible game. Even though it's nine years old not once did I think it was primitive or outdated in anyway. The graphics, gameplay and story still hold up.

I'm so glad I did it. UNDEAD NIGHTMARE NEXT!!!!

Really is an incredible game and experience. You are absolutely right it still does hold up. I wonder if the actors have ever taken into account that they are now part of Western (as in the genre) popular culture, alongside movie actors such as Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Jack Elam, Slim Pickens and so on...

I've never had this with a game until Red Dead and its prequel where I stop and think about wee moments or lines of dialogue. The Western genre really lends itself to great and interesting storytelling. I would like to see CDPR do a Western RPG as well as Rockstar continue with the Red Dead series hopefully a new cast of characters moving away from Dutch and the gang. In saying that, I don't think another prequel with a young Dutch and Hosea would be a terrible idea.

First part - That's an interesting thought. These actors from the game also have the benefit of contributing to the genre in a unique way.

Second part - Agree. No games have ever made me feel quite like this before. John Marston, Jack Marston and Arthur Morgan aren't just simple game avatars. They're like real people. You end up really caring about the story and a lot of the reason is that these characters are written so damn well.

As for a possible RDR3 - I think an interesting story could be that Jack Marston goes to find Sadie Adler and the story kicks off from there?

Yeah, until this is re-released on current gen (and GTA IV), my PS3's are staying put!

GTA IV is epic, but it is a franchise I was already in love with because of the 3-d era, but RDR was so fresh and engaging. Amazing game still.

GTA IV is a game I don't think I'd ever play again. I may be in the minority on this... but I found it really hard. After I completed it I was a gibbering wreck.

I played the first game shortly before the second came out. For the first time because I kept putting it off and when I saw the RDR 2 trailers I knew this was a franchise worth checking out.

First game is a bit of a slow starter but still amazing all these years later. I just wish I still had my One X (it died) to play it again prior to the PC release of RDR 2.

Each game is fantastic in its own ways but for me the dialogue and cutscenes in RDR1 just seem to carry more weight.

Please God, no.

I hated Jack in the epilogue of RDR1, and I hate him in RDR2.

I wouldn't mind another prequel actually.

Set a few years before RDR2, you play as one of the Callander boys that die before the events of RDR2.

Yada yada hijinks and ganglife, but good times, before it culminates in the failed robbery in Blackwater.

That and for me I personally really dislike Sadie as a character so big NO NO from me!

RDR3 will most likely be a prequel set in 1880's.

Yeah Sadie isn't my favorite either, but I've just completed my third playthrough of the game, and she's not that bad actually.

Might be because I got that bug where she's just gone for the entire campaign, but yeah.

It would be interesting to play as a Sheriff in a Western town that is rife with gangs and such things, perhaps using Wyatt Earp as an outline for the new character. Or, maybe you start of the game as a frontiersman working for a company who deal in Buffalo hides, whilst out there you interact with Native tribes with both friendly and unfriendly engagements, then after so many missions (in game time) as the fur trade becomes less profitable you become a hired gun for say a bank who has trouble with train robbers and such things, you'll be a crack shot with a rifle due to your time on the frontier. As you do this job you gain fame and notoriety then the people want to elect you Sheriff as there is an outlaw (singular or gang) who is causing trouble in the territory and you are tasked with bringing him/gang to justice, sort of like Pat Garrett.

Maybe part of the story as well is that your character has ambitions of being elected to the senate or something along those lines and whilst in your pursuit of this you build up a long list of enemies as your time as Sheriff as you attempt to clean up the territory which leads to your eventual demise.

Complete opposite of Dutch and his ideals as you'll be working for 'The Man' but it would be an interesting story to play through.

Loads of things you could do.

Midnight Hitman

Don't install any updates and patches for Undead Nightmare. Rockstar broke it back then on Xbox 360, and they didn't even bother to fix it after it has become playable on Xbox One. The headless zombies glitch forces you to close the game on restart it all over again, holy crap. You can't even play for 30-45 minutes without having to restart the game. And maybe you still can't progress after that, and you might have to restart it AGAIN. Jesus Christ, Cockstar!

I started playing it yesterday but it was no fun. Too much like hard work. Had to clear out a graveyard and the zombies just didn't stop coming. I just thought "f*ck this" turned it off, and read comic books.

Yea, I hated that undead crap. Loved RDR to death but not that.

Hope R* does not waste development time on Undead 2. That would be a shame.

Good day!

I liked it but it's not my favourite of the franchise, it was a bit different to San Andreas, lol.

Do hope R* remaster/re-release the old gen pair as it'd save me setting up the ol' PS3. :)

I'm thinking RDR3 will could be set in 1885, and start a few weeks prior to John joining the Van Der Linde gang.

After that they could do a new set of characters with Red Dead R________.

I agree for the most part the only thing that feels a little dated are johns running animations and the gameplay can feel clunky at times but either way i think the game has aged really well

I must buy a ps3 to play this again, and gta iv episodes.

regarding rdr3, my wishes are that we can play as young Hosea, because it has the same trait as Arthur when relating to dutch and others, even more conservative. The moral and conduct are much alike. Maybe in the past the gang split for some time, travel elsewhere for some storytelling and latter joining again, would be nice to participate.

I don't agree with any of you. RDR3 should definitely not follow any of the characters from RDR/2. We already know what happens to pretty much all of them. I would rather have a game with a new set of characters. My dream Red Dead game is 1930s when all the new generation of outlaws come in kinda like The Highwaymen

You can pick them up very cheap at resale shops, eBay, or even FB Marketplace.

The only downside to buying them off the internet is you never know what you're actually going to get, so a resale shop is probably your best bet.

I have 4 of them.

One is a modded console that I picked up for practically nothing.

I'd sell you one but, the two of them that are not modded, are starting to give some problems with disk read errors.

The other is a (still operational) original PS3 with backwards compatibility and I won't part with that one.

It's a fun Side Story.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Too bad the original online isn't still around. If you had RDR Undead Nightmare, it acted like an expansion for online and also gave the player the ability to have a zombie as their character.

I do miss fighting off the infinite hordes of Undead in RDR online.

Smoke that skinwagon.

P.S.

Does anyone know why that console trophy was called smoke that skinwagon, instead of skin that smokewagon?

I'm almost certain that should have been said "skin that smokewagon".

As far as I'm aware a smokewagon was a reference to a 45 caliber handgun, and skinning it was basically drawing it from a leather holster.

Did this have anything to do with copyrights?

Yeah.

I have to agree.

The series needs fresh stories at this point.

I have the GOTY edition as well and Undead Nightmare is basically broken, because of the headless zombie bug that still hasn't been fixed since 2014. From what I understand, everyone who has the GOTY edition has this bug, since all GOTY editions are on patch 1.08.

I managed a full 100% playthrough of UN on the GOTY edition just leading up to RDR2's release. No issues for me. I dud dowload a small patch for it when reinstalling though, not sure if that was around when you tried or when it was released. :)

Edit: PS4. Lol, oops.

I was playing it on XBOX One through backwards compatibility. What were you playing it on?

The original RDR is a classic, however the Undead Nightmare wasn't that good to be honest, I got bored of the zombies after a few hours
