Metal detector required?

I'm about to start the collectors role and noticed I have the metal detector to purchase.

 

Is this required or could I get the required items from searching around the internet?

Yup, you need to buy it. Having to purchase additional tools in order to obtain some of the collectables gives the role depth and and incentive to level up the role.

You can find some buried items without the metal detector (you'll see mounds of earth covering a lockbox using Eagle Eye). But to get more, you'll need a detector. Aside from looting or chests opened during a Salvage event, the only way to find rare coins is with the detector.

MD is the single most fun and LUCRATIVE af item introduced in FP update. Even if hunting, BH or stranger missions etc are your thing, having it out while riding around and figuratively picking up money on the way is great. I hunt coins, arrow heads and the 4 jewelry categories daily if I have the time and along with the random stuff I find in between fixed spots I bring in $2.5-3k a day. Get it and never look back.

the metal detector is almost OP. No bs, if you ride with it out it'll detect something every 90 seconds and you'll quintuple your collecting over just using maps alone.
