Physical version?

Who doesn't have a Blu-Ray drive ?

Everyone I know who games on PC has the same LG M-Disc Blu-Ray writer, which also doubles as a decent reader.

These drives can also rip PS3 discs for use in the RPCS3 emulator, as well as movies and PC games.

You can write to 25GB SL discs, at a cost of about 50p per Gigabyte. That makes great permanent safe storage for your files/pics/mods/ backups...etc...

Also, If these Climate Change nutters get their way and your tech and internet is curbed, then what will you all do ?

I only have a standard DVD reader/writer. To be honest I don't think Blu Ray is that common on game pc's. Hell I think it's becomming the norm to NOT have any ODD at all.

You're preaching to the choir my man, but no--I have never bothered to purchase a Blu-ray drive for my PC, because I don't have occasion to store a lot of data, and most importantly, games were never released on the format. You can be sure that videogames have always been the primary reason most people buy an optical drive. That was true all the back to the first CD-ROM drives.

I'm still angry that publishers (back when they were publishers and not "publishers") refused to adopt Blu-ray simply in order to avoid paying licensing fees--almost as angry as I still am about the Great Consolization of 2008 itself.

For companies who still complain about piracy--as if piracy has ever caused the financial failure of any PC game ever--it was incredibly short-sighted to get rid of disc-based distribution. If Blu-ray had been adopted over ten years ago, the rate at which install sizes increased would have continued, instead of decreasing. By keeping install sizes high, not only are games as good as possible, but a gamer has a reason to buy a boxed copy instead of pirating like a buttnugget.

A gamer several years ago who was lucky enough to average 8 Mbps may have dearly wanted to play a game without paying for it, but he may well have made the trip to the store after staring "Estimated Time Remaining: 22.22 Hours" in the face. Knowing that he may well have to end up downloading it again anyway, with another fresh chance at a virus.

I can't help but shake my head when people complain about install sizes. Install sizes have been, relatively speaking, lower than they used to be. A 3000 GB Western Digital HDD, the brand I recommend, is ~$70 USD on sale, and 3000 GB is not even a large drive now. A 150 GB installation is ~5.4% of the entire drive.

"But I don't want to install on a hard drive!" you say. Entirely understandable. Games don't yet require SSDs, but an SSD for OS/applications is the obvious choice. The Samsung 860 EVO, which is the brand I use and recommend, was recently $65 USD for 500 GB, and $125 for 1000 GB. The 2000 GB version was recently $270. Keep in mind that the SSD will last years--I've had my 750 GB 840 EVO for almost 6 years, and it's as good as new. For a bit more money, you can get the PCI-E versions which are literally ~7 times faster (~3500 MB/s reads).

Even if you keep an SSD for only 5 years, $65 comes out to an actual cost of $1.08 per month, and $125 is $2.08 per month. If you can't afford that and you don't live in a developing country, I'm almost positive your issue is not a lack of income, but rather too little savings and too much debt.

The problem is not installation size--the problem is download culture and the extinction of physical ownership. Three Blu-ray discs would handle 150 GB, which could accomodate a game install size of up to ~225 GB. Grand Theft Auto V is 7 DVDs; 7 Blu-rays would handle 350 GB, or perhaps an install size of over 500 GB.

We still buy physical things. We still go to stores. We still order stuff online. There is no actual reason why PC gamers can't purchase and install games from disc. This is not an example of innovation, in which something is demonstrably better than that which it replaced. The only reason PC gamers don't have Blu-ray drives now is that there hasn't been a reason to have one for way too long.

A ridiculous chicken-and-egg issue that never needed to happen in the first place.

As the official system requirements list no "DVD player", it's safe to say that there'll be no Physical version released, even if there is, you'll only get the box with an activation code (RGL/EGS) inside.

Just happens you and your friends are the 1% that has Blu-Ray on PC, but that's not enough to release games on that format on PC.

Also I'm gonna copy paste you something I got from the other thread.

"Guys physical version is unfortunately not coming, message is from Polish, Czech, Slovak and Hungarian publisher Cenega."

"Radek, unfortunately no. The game will not have a physical release."

No way the game would come on Blu-Ray on PC. The 5% of PC gamers who have Blu-Ray drives don't justify the manufacturing cost of a medium that's going to have reduced sales.

Oh that's interesting! No mention of anything else inside the box but Game is a reputable store so there's some semblance of something physical on a store then.

Interesting, so I guess Cenega doesn't give a f*ck? They were always advocating for physical PC releases here in Poland...

IDK whether to be happy it's better than what Cenega suggested or sad to have to wait for hours downloading.

Wouldn't necessarily say Cenega don't gaf, the person on live chat might just not have been aware of details if pre-orders open on the 23rd. (One thing that struck me when I visited Poland last year was that cheap physical copies of PC games were everywhere).

These times are ending, PC games are usually 40£ in Poland now a days.

But yeah, I suggest waiting until 23rd or until something new comes up.

So what if it's 1% or 10% of PC gamers who have Blu-Ray drives ?

Only 0.91% have a RTX 2080, while 1.51% have a RTX 2070 - Does that mean we shouldn't get raytracing support on PC ?

A compressed version of RDR2 could come on just 2 DL Blu-Ray discs and save someone a 100+GB download, along with minimal packaging - just the discs and a plastic case - material cost to Rockstar ? $3 ?

I know it's not for everyone, but the cost of my LG drive was the same as RDR2. The SL media is around 50p per Disc, or 25GB for 50p, around 62 cents US.

Don't people back stuff up, anymore ? Use media-based emulators ? PS3 Emulator ? The platform had some great games that the PC never got, and the LG drive rips the original discs perfectly.

I suppose I'm of the "Older" generation of PC gamers 😜

Grid 2019 released today has physical release with DVD's!

But yeah Shadow of the Tomb Raider, now RDR2 and also new COD Modern Warfare also released by Cenega doesn't have PC physical release.

Cenega is losing PC money with this though, they don't have their own store so it's Valve/Rockstar/Epic/Blizzard getting all the money with PC versions now.

They are pretty much a monopoly here, except Ubisoft and EA of course.

They have got all the biggest franchises, they even snatched Call of Duty and PES from CD Projekt this year.

Physical release without discs is not physical release anymore to be honest.

My most prized PC gaming possession, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition:

GxlJZH2.jpg

The box literally makes no sound when shaken, as it is packed completely solid. It feels more like a block of wood than the typical game box. I estimate it to be around 3/4 of a pound. It is very pleasantly hefty. The contents:

* Disc 1: Game DVD
* Disc 2: Bonus DVD with Djinni Adventure Editor and two additional adventures (NOT sold Day One, or indeed sold separately at all)
* Disc 3: Behind-the-Scenes documentary DVD
* Disc 4: Game Soundtrack CD (NOT sold separately)
* Disc 5: CD with music inspired by The Witcher
* Game Guide (Very thick and exhaustive)
* Installation Guide
* Paperback story excerpted from The Last Wish
* Large map

I didn't build my first gaming PC until 2008, or else I might have other physical copies of equal or perhaps even greater magnificence. CDPR continued to release physical copies (true non-online DRM-requiring copies) of The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3, but they never matched the quality of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition.

Is there anyone who has had a gaming PC longer than I have, and has a game that equals the physical prestige of TW:EE?

Dude, it's over, the game is out in 11 days, there's not going ot be physical release.

Even on Rockstar Warehouse where they always have physical versions, it clearly says "PC digital" when you select what edition you want, only PS4 and Xbox One have physical release on Warehouse.

It's sadly not coming... might as well pre-order today.

I concede it probably won't come on 5 November. But think of this from a business point of view, atm R*/T2's strategy is clearly to push as many people as possible to purchase through Rockstar launcher for 100% of the revenue, once they've maxmised this post release it would be illogical to lose their retail presence entirely! That would just be throwing away sales from impulse buys, people purchasing as a present, wanting to pay cash etc. It's also free advertising. If I held Take2 shares I would be pretty pissed off if they just decided to ignore this market entirely, we already know they delayed the Steam version so I suspect likewse for the physical retail version.

I'm not 100% confident in this but I do think there is at least a 50% chance of this and I'll "vote with my wallet." I'm not gonna support this move by purchasing a digital version, doing that would discourage all game publishers from releasing physical. I would be very annoyed if they later released it physical as I suspect. If R* aren't going to why don't they just say so like they did RDRede.1 PC?

Anyone who is going to give up waiting for physical at least use a cheap third party such as GMG or Gamestop as givng T2 or Epic a monopoly isn't good for anyone. Personally I can wait and if there tuly isn't one then that's what I will do a month or so after release when it's on sale. As a PC R* fan I'm used to waiting.It's depressing, only 4 years ago when GTA V PC came out physical pre-orders opened months before digital and the release announcement began "Grand Theft Auto V is now available for PC at retail stores and via digital download."

Many publishers dropped physical this year as games would require just too many DVD's and shipping empty boxes when most games don't have manuals or maps (Rockstar still does though) is pointless.

Game would need 20 DVD's, I admire your determination to wait but it's not coming, mark my words dude, it's already up on pre-order on all other sites and Warehouse version is also a RGL key code only.

Obviously not true seeing as it clearly says "Código digital incluido.  El juego no incluye disco físico."  Now I don't speak Spanish but even I can work out what that means.
