Purposely spoiling the game to PC players will get you banned INSTANTLY.

Don't engage into fanboyism, it looks ridiculous saying "console peasants" and "inferior", and similar, and any platform wars will be penalised accordingly.

Eh..I'll wait for the steam version to come out. I want people to see that I'll have over 1000+ hours on RDR2.

Really heavy is putting it lightly, imo. Odyssey and Origins have serious CPU usage issues. Not in a good way, either. 100% usage in menus and while simply loading into the game. I don't know if it's DRM, driver overhead (see here: https://wccftech.com/ac-odyssey-high-cpu-load/) or something else, but I had to cap Odyssey to 30 to prevent overheating on my CPU, which could hit up to 90 celsius at 60 FPS. This was on an i7 4790, and as far as I know the game had no trouble maxing out more recent i7s as well.

I pray to God RDR2 isn't like this. GTA V is extremely manageable for me when it comes to usage. Hope RDR2 stays the same way.

AC Odyssey suffers with 3 layers of DRM. And Ubisoft. :p  The game eats my 12-thread Ryzen 5 3600 alive too. Not 100% but extremely high for the game it is.

Yeah, every Ubisoft games are unoptimized pieces of sh*ts. On top of that, they put Denuvo on their games.

I can't see any games today that tax CPUs so much other than RTS genres.

Any open world game with a lot of stuff going on can tax a CPU very easily. Real time AI, physics and other game logic can do that easily in big open world games like Rockstar's. I do think R* made an amazing job with RDR2 though based on the consoles' performance (other than suffering in Saint Denis).

For Honor runs extremely well, actually. Though that's a fairly linear, small-scale fighter/action game. It's still very impressive visually. Incredibly light on the CPU depending on mode, too.

I think its due to DRM and running on DX11. I have got a 3700x and i drop the LOD settings down to high to keep the game as smooth as possible. UBISOFT are not very good at optimising CPU usage for open world games

Not to mention, high CPU usage isn't always a sign of an unoptimised game depending on its genre (and the CPU ofc). Definitely expect high-ish CPU usage in an open world game like one from Rockstar, there's a lot going on.

High CPU usage is fine, really. But constant maxing out is a bit worrying. I never see games, even open world ones, stay 99-100% usage... that's like having one of those stress tests/benchmarks running.

I don't know. I got a 8700k. Gotta turn everything down to normal-highs just not dip from 60 to 40s. I only get these issues with Ubisoft games. Only games from them that I could think of that are fairly well optimized are R6 and FH. Why? because Ubisoft knows it majority of fans of these games are going to be playing on PC, while the rest of their games are popular on consoles. So they don't bother.  This is the same company that said 30FPS is more cinematic and a better experience to be playing games at.

*cough* Unity *cough*

Indeed, that's a baddie. Your CPU is on the older side but I can't see something like AC Odyssey having to be an issue. There's a place in Shadow of the Tomb Raider that is a great CPU benchmark and even bottlenecked my GPU before I switched CPU's, it's a market with a ton of people moving around, like a metric ton of people, that to me justifies 100% usage on an old CPU as it can't keep up. But AC Odyssey being like that all the time yeaaah no.

GTA V CPU usage was quite good, last I checked. Haven't played it in a good while, but I might load it up again right before RDR2 just to get a nice feel for what's changed and (hopefully) improved. I seem to recall never having glaring resource management issues with that game. It was always fairly smooth to have running. Could easily alt tab and multi-task without ever being concerned with something eating up too much.

I did say Rockstar games ;) Even with lower CPU usage, Ubisoft games run really strangely, Watch Dogs 2 is a stutter fest and I'm not even near maxing out the 12 CPU threads...

GTA V PC's optimisation was impressive (even on the consoles) and I would expect nothing less from RDR2 PC, especially based on the fact that they have managed to make a more detailed game run BETTER than GTA V in certain instances. The only thing in GTA V that falls apart now is GTA Online with something like 10-20 players, and inside certain interiors like the casino (that one because every wall is a playing video... that's not the core dev team's fault though, not much they can do on an older game either).

A lot of AAA games over the last couple of years max settings are being designed for 8 core cpu's. No sense in picking up a 4 core cpu for gaming anymore

Right but it also depends on optimization. GTAV and any of the Far Cry games don't exceed 20% usage on my 10years old CPU. That's why i'm convinced that when it comes to games other than RTS it's more to do with optimization than hardware limitation.

GTA V wont use more than 4 cores mi cpu usage is always around 25% in game, im expecting RDR2 to use more, especially if it has vulkan/DX12 support

Would that benefit hyper-threading as well? My i7 4790 has 8 threads, it's a bit difficult to tell when they're being used by games. Haven't tried DX12 yet, though.

If you're looking for a new CPU, go for the Ryzen 3600. Just look at how well it performs and it's priced incredibly well (Less than £200)

If you use msi afterburner it will show your cpu usage in games

Gotcha. I use HWMonitor and RealTemp but those only seem to show load/temps on physical cores. Will try out the Afterburner overlay next time.

Any moment now, a person on this forum will get angry and post "Guys, this is about PC release, not about PC specs speculation" .

So, with a release on the 5th, when is it in the 5th? Like first hours of the 5th?

I will book the afternoon of the 5th in my work calendar tomorrow. I hope there won't be gigabytes of release day patch to do...

Not to mention a LOT of developers have started including "future" settings for later technology. We have people out here getting pissed and angry at developers who don't even realise that to beat an Xbox One X all they need is Medium/High settings in most games and that Ultra/Insane ARE aimed for the extreme high end/unreleased tech. It's odd to see PC Gamers act entitled because they can't run games will full high Ray Tracing features at 4k 144Hz and then calling the developers sh*t.

Have you ever played Cities Skylines with more then 5k modded assets?
Even with an i7 9700k and a 1080ti it runs at 6 fps if the city is heavily detailed, it's insane. The reason behind this is that the engine isn't optimsed for thousands of mods.

Yup i have got a 2080 and i dont really care if i can hit max settings or not, happy for developers to put future proof settings in games, Gives a reason to replay some games further down the line after a system upgrade

That's probably because not much effort is made to distinct Ultra settings as something experimental/unattainable by most people's rigs. Many people view Ultra as all or nothing, and feel let down when they can't maintain a certain framerate with all the sliders up. It's very misplaced hate.

I've realized that I can actually keep most of my settings on High and Very High in many games if I just use some common sense and stay away from fancier AA/shadow tech, as well as not making my 980 bite off more than it can chew in regards to VRAM. Suddenly, a lot of games become a bit easier to run with only a few, mostly unnoticeable compromises.
