Can a modder griefer wreck your wifi connection?? (PS4)

Recommended Posts

I was in a regular session today, when this person named zhuhe_1211 showed up. They were invincible and kept killing me over and over. The most I could do was run them over in a car but that wouldn't kill them. They jumped spontaneously all over the map from one location to the other, killing everybody in the session.

Then his character appeared out of nowhere right next to my character, but he was flickering like crazy. This lasted a few seconds and then my connection cut out and I was disconnected from GTA Online.

Since then, my PS4 has been unable to connect to the internet. I'm using Wifi. I've restarted the PS4 and my router several times. But here's the really strange thing - my laptop and phone can also no longer connect. On my screens it shows that the devices have connected to the wifi, but none of my devices can actually connect to the internet since that incident. It's like he's broken my router or locked me out of my own wifi or something.

Am I being paranoid? Is this a coincidence? How is this possible? What the heck is going on???? Does anyone have the slightest idea what's happening here?

To hack WiFi passwords, hackers take two vastly different approaches. Some hackers rely on low-skill attacks that exploit weak passwords and naïve users, while others can execute highly technical attacks using cutting-edge exploits and sophisticated, custom-made tools.

Without encryption, the traffic on a WiFi network can be captured and analyzed by everyone within the range of the network. If you’re curious how far can a hacker be from your home router and still have a strong-enough signal to hack your WiFi, you can download NetSpot, an easy-to-use WiFi analysis tool. With NetSpot, you can instantly see whether your WiFi network is sufficiently encrypted to withstand a targeted attack.

Strong WiFi encryption, such as WPA2, has become an absolute necessity, but even the strongest encryption protocol can be undermined by a weak password. Yes, it can be a drag to remember a ten-digit alphanumerical string of gibberish, but the consequences of a successful WiFi hack can be devastating.

Yes, sorry for the bump, but it is possible for someone to shut down your internet connection. A hacker can obtain a list of every player’s IP address and distribute a Denial of Service attack (DDoS) to your IP address. This will take out your home’s internet connection: both WiFi and wired devices.

You should probably ignore the poster above because that issue doesn’t apply here. To “break into” a WiFi network, a hacker would have to be physically near the WiFi network.

The hacker didn’t “break into” your network per se, he simply flooded your network with a bunch of requests.

Some routers have a built-in feature to prevent DDoS attacks. Maybe yours doesn’t have it enabled?

AFAIK, there's no modders on PS4, yet, anyone claiming he's one is full of caca.

Most likely, that griefer was abusing a God Mode glitch and then, as @damian001 mentioned, hit you with a DDoS attack.

Maybe you should try to contact your internet provider, they can help you with that I hope.

Leave your router powered down overnight (once, not forever)

Bypass your router with something, and see if the internet works without the router. That would help narrow down where the issue is at.

I have had people boot me offline many times but always was able to get back online a few minutes later.

FYI, launching a DDOS attack is both a state felony in all 50 states but also a federal felony. And if the modder launching the attack is part of a crew of modders then the R.I.C.O. organized crime statute takes effect and fines and prison time doubles. And the FBI doesn't care if the modder is a kid. The kid's parents will be in deep do do.

In most cases the modder simply blocked the effected player from communicating with the session using a firewall port block on thier own system. If the effected player can't access the Internet even after a restart then a DDOS attack may be the issue. They should call their ISP and report the problem. They can then issue the account a different IP address and then the player would have to reboot their router/gateway for it to take effect. Only takes a couple of minutes.

I think they should jail all the Underage kids playing this game along with the parents 😂

You probably should have just left the session as soon as you suspected this kind of thing. You have their username so report it.

Yes if you message them on the ingame phone or respond to a phone text, also if you join their party.

It's best not to respond to their messages unless you have a VPN because every once in a blue moon a salty tryhards will attempt to boot you, usually it will be a soft boot *with everyone leaving session*

Sorry for being a little clueless but what about being in the same session as these people? Or can you only view the IP address if you interact with these people like sending them a message or being in their party?

What I'm trying to say is, can they view your IP address if you're in the same session as them even through you haven't interacted with them?

No. Just killing them won't give them your IP only texting them on the in-game phone or through party chat. I heard just being in the session will let them kick you though on XB1/PC

And to the bolded yes, but you would have to respond to their in-game phone message because them just sending it won't do anything. And PSN messages won't do anything either, if you report the message with them threatening to boot you they will get banned/temp-banned

Own opinion:

If person is 18 or above is caught doing DDoS attack: Jail and fine. At 18, you sure as sh*t know what you're doing.

If person is 18 or below is caught doing DDoS attack: Make their parents pay a hefty fine - parents can choose if this fine comes out of their savings or their child's savings.

Unfortunately, turning 18 doesn't instantly mature a person, gifting them with great wisdom and foresight.

I was still fu*king up hard in my 30s. And I regularly play GTA with guys in their 40s and 50s who scream racial and homophobic epithets into open lobby chat and hold grudges against other players for perceived in game slights as if the person had curb stopmed their mothers.

No need to punish their parents when you can just throw the book at the kid.

I discovered on accident that if your mtu is set at 800 you can boot players from the lobby just by sending a strike team on somebody then observing target. Would this be considered illegal?

No because the game itself kicks us out of sessions already.

This doesn't affect other people, only yourself. You lose your connection to the session and split off into a solo session.

I don't know how I changed the color of the words and can't fix it. I afk too make money often leaving the game on while I sleep and wake up in a full lobby even though my mtu is at 800. If you send a strike team and observe target it boots them from the lobby not you. I will make a video here to prove it.

It says everyone left the session except you? That's actually you leaving the session and not everyone else, they will stay in the same session with each other 😊

No, the person you send a strike team on leaves the session, you still stay in a full lobby with everyone else. It works about 95% of the time, give it a try. You have to observe target for it to work, I haven't tried watching a player on TV but that might work too.

I said I would post video evidence of this so here it is. I lagged out three god mode jets by sending a strike team and observing target. No computer or anything just my mtu set at 800. I don't know jack about computers or the internet so does anybody know why this works?

I don't know sh*t either but I'd say it's because you're spectating them and the sh*tty p2p servers can't fathom your internet spectating the jet boi.
