Villains, lawmen, businesses, photography, and heists – the future of Red Dead Online, a Rockstar interview

The game will have been out a year on October 26th.

Meanwhile:

Borderlands 2

Release Date: September 2012

Most Recent Paid DLC: June 2019

Paid DLC that released 8+ years after the game was released

So one monetization model failing for Red Dead Online means they shouldn't try a different monetization model that could be profitable before calling it quits?...

Splitting hairs over the release date aren't ya? 3 weeks shy is still a year in my book.

The latest DLC for BL2 was free. If you paid paid for it, then your a fool. Aside from giving some closure to Bl2, which it needed, the main purpose of it was part of their marketing plan for BL3.

He meant MTX in general, it doesn't matter what currency they sell.

Im all in for a more vibrant RDO experience. It will only be better the further in we go.

Would love me some Photograph quests. Heists. Building and maintaining your own farm etc.

I'd love this, but I have issues trying to figure out how it would work.

R* don't seem, so far, to want to go down the GTAO route of walking into a corona, getting a loading screen and being loaded into your "interior".

The problem I see with farms, farming and ranches in general, is that, obviously, in any given lobby, multiple players will probably own the same plot of land, it would have to be set plots, because, while it's somewhat realistic that our camp can move around, having your ranch or farm move would be ridiculous. That's not even my main issue, say two players who own the same plot are both riding towards it, but they both own different building styles with different upgrades and are both growing different crops or own different livestock, as there is no corona, which ranch does the game display?

If I'm using binoculars from Mount Shann to look at my ranch in Big Valley it would be annoying to see another players ranch there instead.

All that being said, I know almost nothing about how games work on a technical and developmental level, these are just some of my layman's concerns about players owning vast outdoor spaces in freeroam.

I want an Apartment in Saint Denis in the back streets. I doubt we will be able to buy Farms/Ranches as I just dont see how it would work. Multiple people owning the same Ranch, how would you do Farm related activities like herding cattle or milking the cows? Unless everyones farm is instanced and when you cross the boundary line you enter a little pocket dimension but doing that would mean that people cant cross unless they want to be phased out of existence each tie they do.

Ideally I'd want apartments in Saint Denis and cabins out in the wilderness. What I would settle for would be being able to rent rooms in the hotels, saloons and Strawberry visitors center. Make all of the the above instanced so personal dwellings can be customised and to avoid rentals being fully booked in almost every lobby.

R* should give us access to baths too while they're at it, even without the female assistance if they want to keep it PG, my character must f*cking stink, I'm sure he wouldn't mind bathing himself, if he really had to.

Exactly, just rent the room, walk upto the door and press and hold a button to get a little animation of them opening the door with no loading. In the rooms you can sit in a chair by the fire to replenish your Cores like in Camp. You can choose a Basic or Deluxe Room and the Deluxe Room comes with a hot meal which acts like the Stew and a free bath. The Basic Room lets you recharge your cores, wash your face in the basin and change your clothes.

Buying an apartment/room in a town would also be possible. Buying one lets you buy a theme/decorations, move furniture around, have a free bath, spawn in the room when entering Free Roam and the ability hire a Cook who will make you meals and clean the place.

Said it before, let us have baths that give a boost to our stats.

When people on the forums are smarter and or more creative than the employees at Rockstar. Yes we should be able to rent rooms in hotels or apartments. I would also like if we could build our own houses like in the story mode (won’t trigger people and spoil it). I hate coming to my camp and seeing my poor dog laying in the rain. Could I get the tent? Sure can. But why have a tent when I can use that money on the tent and put it towards building a house and getting furniture and the like.

Also wouldn’t it be great if we could build our homes but charge Cripps rent and if doesn’t come up with the cash we can kick his arse out for good? Oh how we can dream.

Its just basic stuff. The game is still bare bones, at least GTAO launched with a multitude of stuff to spend your money on. In RDO it was just instantly into the businesses/Bikers 2.0. Yes, people wanted ways to make serious money but that does not stop them from adding in basic stuff/goals to aim towards. As it is now we have an abundance of money and nothing to spend it on.

That's my current mentality as well. The Camp is as basic as possible, I only bought the Stew Pot because its on major discount this week. I get that they want us to slowly build a Gang over time with memorable faces but when you are sat on plus ten grand and can't buy an Apartment it just seems redundant. I dont have a massive Bounty on my head, I don't need to sleep in the mud like some wild animal. Cripps can keep doing Cripps, keep my illicit business away from civilisation.

There is stuff to spend money on though. At least for me I spend money on clothing, weapon customisation, saddles. so there’s stuff to spend money on dude...

That's the deal in GTAO, separating interiors from the free roam map using a loading screen.

They can do the same with homesteads. As for herding and such, these would take place in the open, giving the missions some risk. Probably not much, since putting players in solo lobbies for some missions seems to be a thing, plus they'd need to address the issue about multiple players in a session owning the same property.

IDK, but they aren't capable of solving the camp issue, so they can feel encouraged to not go further into more property issues, or feel encouraged to bring a static property in the hopes of making people forget about the trader business and the camp shenanigans.

There is no "end game", nothing in the clouds that you can work towards like the Apartments in GTAO.

Yes, they can do that with the actual buildings but what about the surrounding lands? Do we get an invisible bubble around it?

I get the feeling that the Camp will be the centre of our worlds for a while.

Surroundings would stay the same, just non enterable buildings (unless you own the property). Farm animals/cargo/etc would get out only during missions.

There's an easy fix that has been done before; Black Desert Online.

Everyone can own the same apartment/house, and it only renders your personalised property when you enter it. You can literally have 10 people in the same house at the same time and never see each other or go through instanced loading screens. The same can work for RDO - Once you enter the vicinity of a farm (perhaps surrounded by a fence), it only renders your cattle, your items, your interior décor, etc. To everyone else that property will be abandoned unless they own it or an owner invites them to their property. While you're in your property, you're invisible to everyone else. Once you leave, you become visible.

The alternative would be once they open the world to Mexico, your farm plops down on a lot in the middle of nowhere like camps currently do. Maybe if several people own your property type and all the 'lots' are taken, you enter a queue where if someone leaves the server, your property takes their place. Now that's not ideal of course, but it beats simply not having farms at all.

Either way, I would love to own one of the big Mansions in St Denis. Or the Braithwaite farm.

Agreed 100% they should open up Mexico. Not only would we get more missions but also the ability to have more map room for our ranch’s.

I can't understand not doing more for single play, such as paid DLC.

Fallout 4 is the best personal example I can think of, being a game I LOVED and played the heck out of. I INSTANTLY bought every paid DLC for it, loving it so much. I was very disappointed that they quit making them; I'd have happily kept plopping down money.

I think there is a "Politically sensitive" issue, with not having Mexico in the game. This is more to do with the online part, mainly I think. Remember how you could interact with lots of Hispanic npcs in Red Dead Redemption? There seem to be next to none in this, especially online. You see maybe one Hispanic female/male, out asking for help possibly initiating an escort/ambush. It is like they are leery of people riding around and killing them or something.

They might do more with private online stuff, like houses/ranches, once they iron out all the current server disconnects; It has barely improved from when I spent many levels in the beta.

By the way, for a game trying to save server/whatever resources by throwing 23 people in a lobby:

They sure do trigger a LOT of "needless" solo missions. Did I NEED a solo mission, which is probably going to mess up my camp, just to hunt a condor? Also, there appears to be no rhyme or reason to them. Sometimes they are solo, sometimes not. Even in crowded lobbies, I've still managed to find condor spawns (sometimes stowing them on the horse, in case the next supply mission asks for a condor.)

I don't get why story and online modes have to be separate. We have cutscenes with our online characters in them. Rockstar has had silent protagonists before. Just make a game where you play as a custom character that you can also play online with. That way any DLC you make can be in the main game and online.

If they want their games to have replay value, they should make the next one more like an RPG instead of focusing on a scripted story.

I've been saying they should do this since gta 5, it's all I ever wanted, a story with my original character then the ability to go online and continue their existence there with other players

A great inclusion I think would be a business selling horses. Would finally give us a reason to hunt and catch wild horses in the game. Before that there was no real reason to be hopping onto and taming a wild horse.

Photography would be so cool.

As for the rest, I really hope it won't become a business extravaganza like in GTAO, I don't want to spend my play time just by resupplying and selling.

" One thing they’ve already learned from this feedback and from the in-game statistics is that PvP isn’t anywhere near as popular as free roam and cooperative activities."

Maybe thats because the PvP is full of ability cards and auto head shots? I know thats why im not playing it and i bet many more like me fall into that category.

Of course then you have the once a week they give us just 1 mode to play PvP in "Free Aim" ..... Because thats really giving you a good idea how many people want it when half those modes suck because the mode sucks or because there is only 2 maps for it .

Of course then when you go into "free aim" PvP its not even free aim and people still get to use some assist which then causes yet another issue.

These fools in there dancing the do-si-do  around in circles so you cant hardly hit them. Meanwhile they are using assisted aim and have practiced this wack unrealistic movement and can somehow manage to shoot you rather easily while dancing the do-si-do. Thanks to this stupidity I've honestly juts given up all together on PvP. Not because i dont like PvP but because they refuse to actually listen to the feedback and remove this type of bs in a mode thats supposed to be no aim assist at all. If it was no aim assist at all , all those dancers would stop doing that crap because they would never be able to shoot you while dancing.

But sure Rockstar just claim people dont like PvP itself..... instead of focusing on the real issue, people dont like how you all make PvP because you clearly suck at it.
