Villains, lawmen, businesses, photography, and heists – the future of Red Dead Online, a Rockstar interview

Recommended Posts

Jason

https://www.vg247.com/2019/09/27/red-dead-online-future-heists-villain-lawmen-business/

It's worth reading the entire thing but here's some quotes:

Quote

"Heists fit the vision of Red Dead Online so it’s highly likely they will be introduced at some point. As the developers reiterate throughout this interview, player feedback is constantly monitored. One thing they’ve already learned from this feedback and from the in-game statistics is that PvP isn’t anywhere near as popular as free roam and cooperative activities. That means co-op additions like heists are much more pressing than a new deathmatch, for example, but Rockstar has to implement them at the right time to keep that sense of progression, that personal story of growth, from living off the land to walking around Saint Denis with gold bars tumbling out of your satchel.

“PvP will always be there, and we’ll never forget about it,” Hamad says. “It’s just, we’ve definitely seen that same shift towards playing cooperatively. Or even just competing together against the environment. So we’ve definitely seen a shift away from players doing that. It’s a good thing. We’re also going to find ways for players to play competitively in PvP and co-op play.”"

Quote

"While the core of Red Dead Online is being fleshed out with these roles, are there plans for bigger expansions on the horizon? Games like Fortnite have proven that players love to see a world they’re familiar with suddenly change, and there seems to be possibilities for this baked into Red Dead Online already. We’ve seen players boundary break into an untextured version of Mexico from Red Dead Redemption, and the single-player has a whole other, albeit much smaller, map in its Guarma location – perhaps these could extend the world of Red Dead Online at some point in the future.

“It’s not in the plans right now, because there’s still so much we can do with the world as it currently is, as we’ve touched on before,” Butchard says. “We’re building that foundation just now. So no plans just at the moment for that.”"

Quote

"If you’re hoping for single-player DLC, however, you might be disappointed. Rockstar is currently focused on expanding Red Dead Online, content with the huge single-player that already exists in the main story of Red Dead Redemption 2.

“We’ve said it before, but we all love single-player games, and Red Dead Redemption 2’s absolutely massive story and equally massive epilogue are hopefully evidence of that,” Hamad explains. “The team’s ambitions for Red Dead Redemption 2 were sky high in every way, and when we are building worlds of that scale, the single-player experience almost always leads the way. Our ambitions for our online games are just as high, and with Red Dead Online we are continuing to build and expand to match the world we created for Red Dead Redemption 2’s story, not just with the roles but other activities, new random events, characters to meet, new ways to engage with the world and further inhabit your character, as well as trying to improve the overall experience.”"

tl;dr: No SP DLC is in the works.

No word on SP DLC is disappointing, but I do like everything they said about Online. Sounds like Photography is definitely going to be among the next set of roles we get. So hopefully we get some improvements to how the camera works in the next big update.

Talking about photography, I just had a random encounter yesterday. A guy in Cholla Springs asked me to take a photo of him with a sitting cougar in the background. Surprisingly everything went smoothly, I took the photo, the guy paid me and left, no one got mauled. The cougar didn't even react to the event lol

This thing, along with the Albert Mason type missions in SP, would fit the photographer role most likely.

Photography has a lot of potential for unique content + new unlocks, camera upgrades, new poses, all that type of stuff. They would need to overhaul the Social Club photo section for it though, deleting them in-game to free up space is a pain in the arse.

But beyond that honestly there's not much meat there regarding new content, heists are a given and there's no ETA's at all about them or anything, and they basically repeated what they said a few months ago about where roles like the Bounty Hunter and Trader could go with being a lawman or owning a business. Nice to see them talk about still wanting to play with honour and how that could apply to roles as well, honour in RDO has a lot of potential, it's tricky to do it in a way that works well but yea, having that mean something would be nice. It is also really nice to see them come out and say they're very aware that the vast majority of RDO players prefer co-op free roam experiences over PvP though, that's really good to hear and hopefully means we see some more co-op stuff like survivals sooner rather than later.

I was hoping when reading it that they'd at least briefly touch on the control and free aim changes to see what plans they have for that but unfortunately they were quiet on that one.

Then, of course, you've got the stuff that's going to ruffle some feathers. It of course could always be them just playing coy but it seems like they went out of their way to play down rumours about Mexico and a potential Undead Nightmare 2 DLC, but on the flip side it's cool to see that they're interested in dabbling in the supernatural stuff in RDO, at least for things like Halloween. Eitherway, I think it's good that they down played stuff if it's not coming, can't say they didn't warn us if this year comes and goes with no UN2 now.

Glad to hear they intend to flesh out the dishonourable side of things, because there isn't much compelling reason to go that way at the moment. I still for the life of me can't understand why robbing stores, sticking up travellers, fencing horses/wagons etc. wasn't part of RDO from day one...

fencing horses and wagons not being a part of RDO from day one really baffles me considering that the first mission in the game introduces us to a horse fence and implies we'll be working together more, only for us to never see them again.

The current 3 roles are more honourable than anything, so I guess there are at least some future roles catering to dishonourable careers, such as burglar/heister, hitman, smuggler and that stuff.

The hint was to track the Cougar after the payment and shoot it, it was a 3-star Cougar...

Sometimes you have to Think outside the box...

OnT: I still hope for Davis Overland Despatch missions with sensible use of the Stagecoach wagons, as we can ride them as passengers and even switch sides inside the carriage.

And i would see proper passenger wagons of the trains, so we can ride them as an alternative for Fast travel posts...

Lol what do you think I did just after the guy left? 😉

Not even need to track. Just take the sniper and shoot.

This could be a part of a trader role down the line. Running a livestock farm. Dishonorable traders steal horses and livestock from other people and honorable ones do it the legal way. Maybe you could open your own fence shop where you sell stolen wagons, horses and livestock and honorable traders could open a legit shop.

Problem is you're punished for it. Low honour actions shouldn't be punished, going the low honour route needs it's own rewards.

The no Mexico plan is a major waste. SP DLC should be centered around Javier and his adventures in Mexico... with appearances from former gang members.

It could mesh well, with a future RDR2 online DLC.  If that DLC is "RDR 1915". Bringing everything online to the events, that take place when Jack is an adult. Maps, landscapes, buildings the works.

Not a word about game instability and issues, but I guess that's not what the interview was about. Still, it would be nice to see Rockstar to recognise the problems and at least address them. Letting the crowd know they've been heard in that area too.

But, so far their plans look good and I'll be sticking around to see what will come next.

Rockstar isn't going to discuss major DLC in an interview like this, so while it's a bit disappointing to not hear anything regarding things like singleplayer DLC and/or map expansions I can't say I'm surprised, but I think there is a fair amount of meat, them mentioning continuing to focus on PvE and specifically talking about photography and expanding the current roles instead of just adding overly similar roles and making actual new roles fairly distinct speaks volumes about the direction they want to take RDO, and it sounds very encouraging to me, like they want to avoid the mistakes they've made with the copy/paste businesses of GTAO. If we get roles like photography and angler (which I think is very likely since we can't donate fish to Cripps, so I think they must have some sort of plan for a fishing role) then it would actually viable to play a character as being completely non-violent and still make a lot of money and xp, you could collect items with the detector between photography destinations and stop by ponds and lakes along the way to fish. If they play this right they could actually allow for an incredible amount of diversity in playstyles.

You shouldn't have your Honour changed for doing Bounty Hunting work at all. Violent criminals who shoot first should be put down or you should get some that don't instantly open fire. No sane Bounty Hunter would charge someone who is shooting at them waving their Lasso screaming "Swiggidy Swooty, Gimme dat BOOTY!"

Honour changes should come from taking bribes or killing Hogtied Bounties. Bribes could be as simple as matching the Bounty or leading you to treasure but you have the chance of being led into an ambush.

The photographer role sounds promising. Maybe it could be a way of introducing the compendium from single-player without necessarily copying and pasting it? It would be nice to catalogue the various points of interest and animal species in the game via the camera - though I wonder if the single-player completionists would have the appetite to do that all again.

"Throughout our interview, Rockstar mentions how much the developers have their ears to the ground. They’ve heard your complaints about not being able to mix and match role outfits and they’re seeing if there’s anything they can do"

I really like that!

I really like the first Bounty Hunter outfit, but I am so sad that it doesn't feature a satchel.

I have already bought a collectors outfit that has the satchel I'd use for my outfit if they were ever made into individual pieces, just so I have it ready.

And with these news, I am even more hopeful that it will come, maybe even sooner than I think.

I also like that the roles aren't a one-off and abandon, but that they will continue to add to them and expand them further and further.

I just hope that you aren't FORCED to become, say, a lawman in the Bounty Hunter role. I want to stay a free agent as much as possible.

"More opportunities are coming in later updates to expand your empire."

But I don’t want any empire for crying out loud, or a dozen more money-making ventures, I want STORIES and ADVENTURES instead of your typical fetch and delivery quests that you’ve bloated GTA Online with beyond recovery.

What about Mrs. LeClerk? Her story is more integral to the game’s world and atmosphere than goddamn business empires and industries. And isn’t the core theme of RDR2 is its criticism of how industrialists poison the earth? So why try to evolve the Online portion of the game to be the antithesis of its story portion’s stance and messages?

I hope for more Land of Opportunity missions with Mrs. LeClerk and/or Marshal Davies, and their respective feuds with Grace Lansing and the Del Lobos.

Rockstar just said "no real plans for Mexico right now". So my hopes that we could go to Mexico to meet with Mrs. LeClerk and Horely, and also kick some Del Lobos ass on their home turf doesn't seem likely.

“even buy a canine companion, which, by the way, the developers say they’d like to let you take out on missions with you in the future.”

good news about the dog and might actually be worth buying then. Would love to take a dog on hunting trips.

Rockstar mentions how much the developers have their ears to the ground. They’ve heard your complaints about not being able to mix and match role outfits and they’re seeing if there’s anything they can do, though they’re slightly hampered by some technical limitations there.

Fantastic news if they let us seperate the items and I would finally buy my first role outfit! Apart from bandoliers potentially clipping I have no idea what these technical limitations could be though? Just don’t make the outfit a skin like all the previous outfits...seems simple enough.

I do hope this means next update is Outlaw Simulator, considering this one is Good Guy Simulator

There's no evil choices or things to do out of the main missions, aside from repetitive Stranger missions... Honest players are LOADS of ways of playing, and Honor goes up ridiculously fast with no way to counter it.

That's blowing smoke up your azz instead of using the word "laziness". The only technical limitations is the time and effort to redo the outfits as separate pieces.

Regarding major add on's like map expansions or SP DLC:

They NEVER said they won't do a SP dlc. Reread the piece, they never answer the question, just evade it.

About map expansions:

They said no plans right now, so they don't shoot it down either. Hell I don't think they would even acknowledge it if they have it in the works. The question is also weird and the answer is more like an evasion than a real solid answer.

We got a question of about 5 sentences and a reply which basically says: not yet.

There's no way they wouldn't add Mexico, think of all the potential and interest the addition of Mexico would add?

A whole new area of the map to explore would bring loads of players back, and also provide more areas for them to have content take place. Perhaps we even pick a side of the war there, Rebel or Army? Or play the middle ground like John Marston
