djb204
As the title says, does the $400 dog offer anything more? Does it have more perks or abilities? or are we paying extra for nothing?
KassuX97
I think it is only different breed.
Shadowfennekin
They're just cosmetics basically. So buy whatever dog you like I'm holding off until the PoS4 exclusivity one ends.

Daleificent
Yeah, was a little disappointed in the difference in prices. And the lack of breeds. I was hoping for a Blue Tick or a Husky as well. Commander S, joshua969 and ALifeOfMisery
Leftover Pizza
I'd like to see a dismiss option. Although I favoured having a canine friend on hunting trips, a camp dog feels utterly useless. It craps all over the place and adds nothing when you're not leveling the Trader role and get your camp raided. Heck, even Crapps doesn't like the dog. I think we will see more use for the Dog in later updates with different Roles. Their plans seems to be having each update build on/add to the previous one. I think they will eventually give us the ability to have the Dog follow us perhaps in the specific Hunter update. Plus its one of the most requested features. Caffeination
I’ve gotten the black Labrador just because I like black-furred animals and have more than enough cash on me, so if you really want a dog, just get one of the Foxhounds as there’s no beneficial difference between any of the breeds. Just go to Cripps chair at the chuck wagon, mark the dog under and press dismiss. You get an alert to disband the dog, just like horses. They'll probably add some of the others* from single-player later (probably not the Poodle - not necessarily great guard dog material, there...), but it's a bit frustrating to think that they might do that, and you'll effectively have to spend several hundred $$$ twice, if you get something now and they add something more to your liking later on. *Husky would be good, as would the Border Collie - might be room to add some new ones, too, like Jack Russells, Beagles, etc. Non Funkable Token and ALifeOfMisery

Wrong continent for the time era RDR was set in IMO Now a herding breed like a German Shepherd Dog or a game dog like a Spaniel or Terrier would be more plausible. Too bad the dog companion is cosmetic only. Should've been more functional. Like being able to set your slobbering Bull Mastiff on watch dog duty. Just so it can make chew toys out of griefers who crash your camp would be AWESOME. Edited September 22, 2019 by PkUnzipper

Wrong continent for the time era RDR was set in IMO Well, not wrong for late-1800s America - traders were importing Chukchi sled dogs to use in Alaska and elsewhere, and along the way, what was referred to simply as the "Chukchi dog" got renamed as the "Siberian Husky" (i.e., the name isn't because 'that's what they were called in Siberia', but because 'that's what Americans called them after importing them from Siberia'). ...and I'm guessing someone at R* already knew that, seeing as they're already in RDR2. IamCourtney
I just went with one of the Foxhounds because it was the closest I could get to a lookalike of one of my own dogs, didn't even realize it was the cheapo option until days later

American Foxhounds are about as useless as it is possible to be at being a watchdog. It is notable that all three dogs they have given us so far are retrievers rather than genuine guard dog type breeds. We are definitely going to get to hunt with them in the future. Knowing R*, I'm more inclined to think they went with the most 'typical dog'-looking ones first (assuming they even add any more later on), rather than any logic or long-term plan. Having dogs bark as an early warning system doesn't require them to add any new sound effects or animations, unlike retrieving birds and the like (unless I missed that in single-player, and there are animations for that kind of thing). Poodles, or real poodles rather than the little lapdog version that’s in the game, are retrievers as well. French water dogs, the equivalent to the British labrador. But better in every measurable way. in the 1890s, the most common guard dogs you’d see would be Dobermans, Bullmastiffs, Boxers, and Rottweilers. They were specifically bred to be guard dogs.
