"I Can't Believe It's The Same Band.." Thread

Again Kraftwerk, in 1975. It's unusual enough in the mid 70's to see a band without guitars. This wouldn't be normal until the synthwave explosion from Britain in the 80's.

This track is about radioactivity but it's in their concept album of the same title that explores themes of radio transmissions and radio and so the title might be taken as a double meaning radio-activity and radioactivity. :P

Then they added a warning at the start about radioactivity as seen below in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Over the years, Kraftwerk update their music catelogue. Below is a video of them doing the same track in 2012 in Japan, with Japanese lyrics, and they replaced "the "Hiroshima" lyric with "Fukuskima"

It's interesting, the evolution and one-off versions. In 1975, it's apolitical, just them making music about inanimate things, science etc. Then the song became politicized and became an anti-nuclear track. Not an anti-nuclear man myself, just for the record but I find the track interesting.

Swedish band Celtic Frost

1984 - 1985 - A cocktail of Death/Thrash/Black Metal or just "Avant-Garde Metal" for others.

1987 - More eclectic, Gothic, Doom stuff...

1988 - Glam/Hard Rock. Not a bad album, but the press and some fans hate to death this album.

1990 - Another blend of different genres.

Some wished this album in the place of the previous album and maybe they would have had better luck. A great album.

2006 - Back to the roots and exploring new soundscapes.

Watch Michael Jackson and The Jacksons performing Shake Your Body Down To The Ground on Spanish TV in 1979 during their Destiny tour, then watch a performance of the same song in Los Angeles in 1984 on the Victory tour and tell me if that's evolution

Awful Waffle

low-fidelity, high energy, DIY, greasy hair, too loud, too much gain, slurring the words, imperfect playing, 2-piece garage duo.

high production value, mild-tempered, studio produced, clean cut, evenly mixed, proper performance, 5-piece traditional band.

Another band that changed so over the years is Bring Me The Horizon, liked them then, like 'em now

I'm pretty sure BMTH is like the ONLY band that was once deathcore, then transitioned all the way to pop/electronic.

Grimes in 2010. Very soft, quiet and dreamy indie music.

Grimes in 2018. Loud nu metal inspired song with a cyberpunk theme.

Beastie Boys started off as a hardcore/punk band in late 70's when they were teenagers. In the 80's they would befriend Rick Rubin and create Hip Hop music fused with Rock and then straight-up alternative Hip-Hop throughout the 90's/00's/10's. They never stopped making unusual instrumentals.  In fact you can pick two tracks off the same album and have zero idea it's the same band.

Kanye West at the end of this video below is hilarious...

Going back to my point about picking two songs off the same album and them sounding completely different.. Here's an example..

I suppose it can be classed as Jazzy-Funk. MCA, playing double-bass, Mike-D on drums and Ad-Rock playing wah-wah guitar. It's a Far cry for Fight Your Right about 8 years before it.

Norwegian band Manes. Their sound changed drastically in their second album and I love the change of this band.

Black Metal (first album from 1999, the link posted is a reissue)

Experimental (Avant-garde/Jazz/Electronic elements and even Rock) (2003)

Yes' whole career was prog-rock which inspired or evolved to math-rock, with track having lots of changes/sections in each track, very technical musicianship, with some concepts and very non-radio friendly music. For example the opening track on their album Close To The Edge is 18 minutes long (broken down to IV sections). It sounds like a nightmare bad trip at the start. But it's genius.  Unlike any other band at all.

Then around 11 or 12 years later on their 11th album they finally had a number one. It's their only number one single. If anyone bought Owner of a Lonely Heart thinking this was a typical Yes song would be sorely mistaken. I don't know how to describe Owner of a Lonely Heart but it's an outlier. It's not typical Yes. It's a pop song they created for fun, I suppose. It's like yacht rock, maybe?

I think Yes are in GTA twice. Yes is more Roundabout than Owner of a Lonely Heart.

Well, technically, they are the same band but they did modify the name after the departure of the guitarist and bassist.

Jefferson Airplane back in the 60's...

Jefferson Starship... the 80's...

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Anyone know Underworld? Even non-electronic/techno fans will remember their 1995 techno-banger from Trainspotting, Born Slippy.

Well, only 6 years before that came out.. this was Underworld. Probably one of the most drastic changes in such a short time. They were basically an 80's new-wave band.
