Fat Faces Are Here to Stay

A simple fix to this is adding “Head 1, Head 2” options in the CC. Beta head, Patch head.

Or, similarly, just add them as different heritage presets, using the old assets (which means they don't have to tweak the way the character creator works - they just need to add more options to the existing menus) - and that way, they've added more customisation potential in general.

Plus, it means that rather than turn the problem into an either/or situation, where restoring the existing presets to their beta versions might similarly f*** things up for players who created their characters after the beta, having them listed as separate heritage options means that nothing done to one affects the other.

FWIW, I went back into the game and checked my (created post-beta) character, and nothing's changed, so it's almost certainly down to R* updating all beta-created characters to use the post-beta settings.

Got a reply from my ticket tonight. They gave me 10 gold bard for my inconvenience and said the issue has also been fixed. I've replied asking how it's been fixed exactly and if characters will revert back to how they used to look. Let's see what they say to that.

Edit.

Ok, so R* have edited my face.... AGAIN

Since the alleged 'hot fix' her face is till wide, but now some features are taller such as nose/brows.

EDIT:

Okay, so I looked at my toon with her clothes from the previous outfit in the CC. And there is no change to her facial features since contacting support. Seems adding a shirt gives the appearance of her nose/mouth changing height somewhat. But she is still fat faced.

Did you close down the game and restart it?

I've restarted game and console numerous times. My toon still looks like sh*t. She does not look like her 1.11 version, only the fat faced 1.12 version.

R* didn't do anything. Unless the hotfix they are talking about, is the 1.12 patch... which is broke the toons and made this bug.

But trying to communicate this to Rockstar Support is an extreme struggle. English may or may not be their first language and they may not even play the game.

Rockstar are able to push hotfixes without a patch that needs downloading, but idk what the hell that CS person is on about as they quite clearly haven't hotfixed the issue lol

Here’s the response to my ticket:

“Hello AStiffBreeze,

Thank you for contacting Rockstar Support.

I understand that it might be inconvenient for you therefor, I am glad to inform you that I have credited 10 gold bars as the compensation for the character appearance.

You will see the changes once you are logged in into your account.

Please feel free to contact us for any further help.

Enjoy the game and have a nice day !

Best regards,

Katherine S.

This is like going from John to derpy looking Jack allover again.

I refuse to play RDO looking like this, and I really shouldn't edit before R* makes an official statement about this bug.

Yeah but I think the same thing applies to any business...

Never admit fault.

Seems to work for the majority of them out there.

That’s my plan too. I haven’t been into the character editor since launch, and I’ll wait until this mess is definitely sorted out before I touch anything (just in case).

I used my freebie and spent 20 gold.

I made a ticket with Rockstar and they gave me 10 gold, and it looks like they’ve given several other people the same now, so that seems like the standard

Don't know why but my face is looking normal again, maybe I've just gotten used to it? Anyone else feel the same?

Haven't logged in for about 2 days now, been busy with the MW Beta. Between that, this and my weekly challenge progress resetting what seems like every 4 days, I decided it was time to take a couple days away from RDO. Gonna login later today and see if anything has changed/been updated to the face. If my face looks more sunken (as I moved sliders to the narrow options) I will report back, but I am not holding out hope.

Same, but not really, it looked more the same, but the head size is still kind of off, it's annoying but meh

So, I've ended up with a couple replies from support about this whole face issue, and it really does seem like they have no idea what's going on.

First they give me 10 gold bars compensation...

"You have mentioned that your concern is regarding the character appearance.  I apologize for the inconvenience this might have caused you. We have added 10 Gold Bars to your account as a compensation for this. You should be able to see this when you log in to Red Dead Online the next time. Hope this would resolve the issue.

Please feel free to contact us anytime if you have further queries."

and then upon asking if this support person has any idea if the face widening is an intended change or a known issue...

"Thank you for writing back to us.

You have mentioned that your concern is regarding the character appearance. In order to assist you further, I want to inform you that the issue has been fixed from our end.

Please log in into the game try to do it again.

If the issue still persists please do let us know."

Logged in and nothing is different at all. Thought my face might've appeared a bit slimmer, but it's most likely just this reply acting like a placebo in my mind fooling me into believing something's been done. Compared screenshots and nothing has changed... still all stretched in the face. At the same time, don't know if they mean "fixed" by what happened in 1.12 being intended or not, but they seem too outside the loop to know what's an issue and what isn't. I still stand firm that this is a bug, just off the fact that others with beta characters--regardless of going into the editor prior to 1.12 or not--have not been affected with this face stretching, while others have. It seems too randomly dispersed to be an intended change.

I'll gladly take the gold bars though. Just hope this gets addressed soon... 😅

OK so I got a R* Support reply today... apparently the character issue (they didn't refer to anything specific) is now "fixed"... only it's not. And I got 10 gold bars for my trouble. Yay 🙄

Here's what I wrote back:

Dear Kate E

So far I have spent upwards of 30 gold bars and over $2000 trying to fix my character's face, which as you can probably imagine constitutes an integral part of the attachment to and immersion in a persistent online gaming experience, which is exactly what Red Dead Online is.

The character which I created in the RDO Beta is now lost forever because thanks to whatever changes have been made to the "new" character editor, it is now impossible to replicate the face.

You actually said in your previous reply to me that the issue is now "fixed". I put it to you, and all the Rockstar devs, that this is NOT the case. As I said, I have tried and tried again over the past 48 hours to recreate my Beta character to no avail, and in the process I have noticed the following things:

1. It doesn't matter what you do in terms of changes to the custom character sliders - when you exit back in to the game, your in-game character does not reflect the changes made UNLESS you randomized everything and started from scratch. This means that you CANNOT just go in to the character editor and make changes on the fly and have those changes take effect and be reflected in-game.

2. Should you make any changes to the character sliders and exit back into the game; IF and WHEN you go back into the editor the next time (as I did many times due to my disappointment at it not working properly) some of the sliders you changed will revert to some kind of "default" setting (my theory being that the sliders revert to settings I made in the RDO Beta) and do not reflect the slider changes you literally JUST made! Therefore there is zero persistence across the edits you make, making it hard to keep track of subtle changes, which as you can imagine are key when you are trying to refine your character without starting from scratch every time!

So, effectively the PAID character editor Rockstar has bestowed upon us is quite frankly broken! And yet we are paying hard earned in-game RDO Dollars/Gold Bars or hard earned REAL WORLD currency for paid Gold Bars through the PS Store, for the privilege of using a broken system that has caused us to lose our beloved Red Dead Online characters, which for many (just have a look at those Reddit posts and you'll see) are SO important to our gameplay experience. Couple that with the constant resetting of our Daily Challenges (it happens to me daily since update 1.12) and you've then got very disappointed and frustrated customers on your hands.

Offering me 10 Gold Bars as compensation really doesn't mean much when my original Beta chraracter model has now been lost forever... and the Gold Bars will just get wasted once again in the broken character editor.

Rockstar should just come clean about the issues caused by update 1.12 and make the damn editor FREE, permanently. I can think of about 20 other non MMO games off the top of my head that allow you to change your character's appearance for FREE as many times as you like... and ironically one of them is a Konami game. Red Dead Online is not an MMO, but at least MMO's tend to have functional character editors!

Looking forward to your reply...

Leftover Pizza

I fixed the fat face earlier this week and today it returned again and still no word of acknowledgement from Rockstar, apologising in public or even address the problem. The bit of faith I regained after the almost Autumn update released is smashed to pieces again.

Pocket-Fox's reply:

Hello again, This issue continues, and I will explain again carefully.

1: I created my original character during the Beta.

2: With the launch of the 'Frontier Pursuits' DLC (Patch 1.11) Players were able to customise their existing characters. I chose to edit my character. I changed only a few features (such as age - which was set incorrectly) I took a screenshot of my character at this point. see image '1.11 Face (Created during 1.11)' I was very happy with this look (and want my character to look this way)

3: For the most recent patch (1.12), I noticed my character's face now looked wider, fatter and puffy. But I had made no changes. I opened the character customisation option and noticed the sliders had not changed, all the details were as they were in 1.11. However my character looked drastically different. see image '1.12 Face (Not edited)' So I quit the character customisation, making no changes. Although it seems apparent that the patch from 1.11 to 1.12 had changed my character's appearance, and I was not pleased with this.

4: I submitted a ticket about this, believing it to be a bug. There is also a large number of other players reporting on this same bug and issue who have experienced their characters face looking wider/fatter, despite them making no change. They are also unable to make their character look as they did in 1.11.

5: After submitting my support ticket, I received your reply and the 10 gold compensation (I appreciate the 10 gold, but I do want my character to look as she did in 1.11). In this support reply it is mentioned 'this issue was hotfixed recently'.

I loaded the game today and checked my characters face again. see image '1.12 Face (After support ticket no editing)' At first glance, her face looks the same as it did in 1.12 (which I did not want). Upon closer inspection however, it seems her face has changed again, this time with slight changes to the height of her facial features. The Result: She still does not resemble the character I created in 1.11, and still has a wider/fatter face. I believe the bug is still present and has not been fixed.

Pocket-Fox's reply:

Edit to point 5:

Edit: I changed my characters clothes to that which were used in the previous comparisons (for consistency. see image '1.12 Face (After support ticket no editing - same clothes)' ) It appears there have been no changes to my character since the support ticket.

To reiterate and keep things simple.

1: I made my character in Beta

2: I changed my character appearance in 1.11

3: In 1.12, my character changed appearance without me editing them (a wider, fatter face)

4: I contacted support

5: Support has said this bug was hotfixed

6: My character still looks bugged (wide/fat faced) as they did in 1.12

7: My character does not look how they did when I created them in 1.11

8: I want my character to look as they did in 1.11

I hope this is clear, and apologise for any confusion.

Kate E.'s reply:

Hello Pocket-Fox, Thank you for contacting us again.

I really appreciate you for explaining the issue in detail. I apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

This issue has now been completely fixed and I request you to try again to change your character's appearance in the game.

If the issue still persists, please share the screenshots of the character before and after you made the changes.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Best regards, Kate E. Rockstar Support

I have yet to test anything. Because I am currently finishing two reports and a thesis. So when I get some time, I will test things. Gotta say though, don't really like spending my scant few hours of free time 'testing' and then writing up support tickets.

I used my free edit from the Outlaw Pass to change mine. Hes close but the side of his head from his cheeks bones to ears is too wide. His whole head is too wide, I mean I can get used to it as its not made him uglier or better looking but its still annoying.

Quick off-topic question if I may seeing as we are talking about and spend alot of time in the editor. The "Body Type" option, does it change the actual looking of the body or just the bulk? I have Athletic as my current one but does Brawny give any muscle definition and does Heavy give a gut and man boobs?

I saw a guy one here that had Skinny and purposefully underfed his character and that dude has visible bones jutting out.

Basically I am thinking of changing my Body Type from Athletic to Brawny. Does it change anything apart from size?

Pocket-Fox's reply:

Hello,

I have entered the editor to get my character to look as they did in 1.11

Upon entering the editor I have taken a screenshot of my character, see Image 2.

I have made sure the sliders are the same as they were for my original character. I have then taken a screenshot, see image 3.

The Image 3 face, remains the same as image 2 face. It however does not resemble the original face of my character from version 1.11, see Image 1.

My desired outcome is to have my character look as she did in Image 1, patch 1.11 when I created her.

I have made no changes to my character since 1.11, but with the 1.12 patch her face is now wider. I have checked my settings in the creator numerous times to make sure nothing has changed, and indeed, no sliders have changed. Despite this her face is wider and I cannot return her to her 1.11 (Image 1) appearance.

I am still unsure if you are understanding the issue I am talking about.

My issue, is that I have 'not altered or edited' my character since patch 1.11, but she looks different since patch 1.12 see images 2 and 3. I cannot change her back to her original 1.11 appearance, no matter where I move the sliders, the upper portion of her head is always wider than it was previously.

It is like the presets or mesh for character models in version 1.11 have been widened in version 1.12, and there is no option to return my character to how she looked, and how I made her originally.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Am I not explaining this clearly? I have summarised it a few times already. But it's like support thinks I edited my toon, made face A, loaded into the game with face B and thought 'no, I wanted face A'

IT IS NOT THAT.

It is, I made face A, after patch 1.12 I had face B. I go into editor, and face A now looks like face B, what was face A is gone for good.
