Fat Faces Are Here to Stay

Sooo the latest is that after three further attempts in the editor, it would seem that in order for any changes you make to be reflected back in game, you just have to reset everything by randomizing your character once you have settled on your heritage and THEN start over, assuming you took note of your sliders. But as Karen Daniels says, even then, your Beta character will be gone with the wind and you will only be left with an approximation thereof. It seems that Rockstar has indeed changed the skull shape within the editor as of update 1.12 either inadvertently or no. It does however do away with the "fat" face so at least that's something.

Anyway I submitted two support tickets so we'll see what comes back and at the least hopefully they'll fix the editor and give me a refund. As of now my character now looks like the lovechild of Robin Wright and Ruby Rose and it only cost me a character edit voucher, 10 Gold and RDO$1200 for my trouble 😅

It's frustrating because a large part of the enjoyment you get from a persistent online game like RDO is the attachment you have to your character playing both as an observer and as a sort of defacto protagonist, so any unwanted changes to said character affect your overall experience and even something as "minor" as your appearance (in terms of the impact it has on the gameplay) significantly affects how you relate to your avatar. I guess for me, ol' Pixy Morgan (in my magical world of Red Dead lore, my character is Arthur's younger sister who has come out West to look for him and seek fortune and glory 😉) has now gone from cute adventure seeker to hardened Bounty Hunter in appearance alone. Just as well I'm well on my way to being in the top tier of Handbill hustlers then...

So basically the issue is that the beta faces are being forced over the new rules set by the new editor?

Well from what I've seen, something has changed after update 1.12!

I made my character in the beta and then edited her after the Frontier update dropped and she looked the same... then update 1.12 produced the "fat" face bug and when I went to try and fix my character (I should probably just have waited to see if R* addresses the issue 🙄) using my original beta sliders, she came into the game just looking weird and not how she appeared in the creator. And if you go back into the editor again and look at the sliders, they're not even in the same place you changed them to previously despite your face looking the same... so it's a big ol' mess it seems. My advice would be don't change your character if you are happy with your beta one. And if you have the "fat" face bug just submit a R* support ticket and wait for a fix... 🤷‍♂️

Makes me wonder whether someone's got Freddy Krueger running around out there somewhere in RDO 😅

I have seen some f*cked up faces from people, one on Reddit the other day has had me laughing for three days solid. I wish I could find it again.

In response to your other post, I have edited my character already, now I fear that the "fix" will return his face to what it was when I already made it the thinnest to combat "Fat Face" and I will end up with a pencil for a head.

And after days of reports of this fat face issue, not a f*cking word from Rockstar, nor a slightest hint into the direction of apologizing to those effected and any acknowledgment of the impact it can have to many players. Typical.

I used up my 2 free vouchers and $1200 to recreate my character and I have come to the conclusion that my character/user is bugged. I have two PS users and I created a character on my other user which I do not use and took screenshots of my options/the sliders when creating my character. The character ended up good. Then I used the screenshots to recreate my character on my main user and the character ended up different! Like how is that even possible. His nose gets bigger. His lower face sticks more out than it should, his eyebrows are more sunken in. I am certain my user/character is bugged....

Maybe player characters are all updated to the new models but some people are still on the old creator so it f*cks up when you try and re-edit?

Wild guess tho tbh.

Well I'm going to sit tight for a while. In fact my character hasn't actually changed that much anyway and unless I was told about the change I probably wouldn't have even noticed. Still waiting to hear from Rockstar about whether this was intentional or not before even considering loading up the editor. Even though it's believe just loading your character in and not saving anything doesn't affect them, I'm scared to go anywhere near it right now.

They more than owe us an explanation, they owe us a fix if possible, and whether or not it's possible to fix they owe every player effected by it a refund for any character edits they've made in the last week and a half. If this is an accident they're doing a terrible job responding to it, and if it's intentional then they deserve a whole lot of grief for not warning us in advance.

totally agree  ^

Also , since they clearly can not do updates without screwing our characters up. How about just mke editing your character free, you know all the time . Stop trying to stick it to us . Especially since they can not get things right themselves.

Wild guess tho tbh.

But that would have been why they implemented the change. To get everyone on the same baseline.

I do recall seeing videos when the initial changes to the creator were made and do not recall seeing the option for eyeball size, which is there now... if I am wrong I apologize.

The idea is to leave well enough alone, regardless of which version of the creator people used. So let's do a little grouping and theorizing here:

If Beta players (Group 1) created their characters last year, using the outdated structures, and all others (Group 2) did so or made new characters after the changes earlier this year, but all players made tweaks and changes on September 10th, they hit confirm because they were pleased (to varying degrees) with how their characters looked. Why then, with no announcement, change every character (because even Group 2 players have stated the faces were not even this wide in the beginning of the year) to be in this new third structure format? Why not allow Group 1 to keep their structure and Group 2 to keep theirs? It was obviously working and people were not complaining to where they were Group 1 who wanted Group 2 structures. And we would never have confirmed the changes with our initial free appearance change if we were not satisfied or told that our structures would be changed this drastically. At best we would have taken more time to think about the changes we wished to make, if any. It is just the worst possible outcome that these changes were made, on a dime, with no warning and with nothing we could do about it.

It is worth noting that the beta structure was not bad in any sense. The issue was that the way our characters looked in the creator was not representative 100% of how they looked in the game. With the initial changes, it was a much better representation. And on September 10th, I thought my character looked even better in game than in the creator.

Just like how the SocialClub crews created before the release of Max Payne 3 have this 2 punches on the side of the tag to designate founder crews, why not just leave it where it is, and if there are new players coming in, they get to be Group 3?

Yes, this is not fair in the sense that Group 3 gets stuck with the Robert Z'darn structure(but neither is altering how our characters look without our consent or verbal communication), but this is the thing: Ignorance is bliss. They will never know what they didn't have and really cannot complain about their faces being too wide as their baseline will be different from our baseline. Plus, it allows them to create the character they want using what they have now been given. And I can almost guarantee that (assuming they take their time to work on the sliders) they will be pleased with what they create.

If it is them getting every character updated to the same character models + creator then that's fine reasoning for the change.

The issue is this was shadow dropped on players with no warning and players have been, so far, expected to deal with the consequences or fix it with their own money. If they dropped this with warning and gave all players a free change or two it would have went down a lot better than it did.

Definitely needed to give players advance warning, and advise them to re-edit their characters if they were made using the old beta presets.

But as I said before, they'd have been much better off just adding new facial features when the game came out of beta, rather than altering the existing ones (again, that's how Monster Hunter just did it), rather than making a change that would most likely screw things up for a large chunk of players.

...I mean, this is R*, and they've already demonstrated (with GTAO) that they're perfectly fine to fiddle with things that worked just fine, and make them worse for no good reason, so this isn't exactly unprecedented, but still...

I love how much of a crap shoot dealing with support is, I go into the chat with daily challenge reset issue and having spent my free voucher and 10 gold on appearance, I walk out with just 10 gold...

Like it's something, but at the same time not even what I fully lost to the character creator, fun.

Apparently when you randomize character and back out, your character will sometimes have the age (and somerimes other features) of the randomized character.

Just go in and back out a few times and you'll have your old character again.

Well I was able to restore my favorite characters at least. I'm happy about that. It was a headache but I managed to get em close enough to what they were. A couple were beyond repair but that's okay I'll be better off not managing so many anyway lol. Not happy that we weren't told this change was coming but that's water under the bridge now. I just hope they never do something like this again.

I opened a ticket with Rockstar and sent a couple of pics.  Here is what I sent(Excuse my poor grammar, I hastily typed this at work in between tasks):

When logging in on 9/18, I noticed my characters appearance had changed, and I did not change it that way. His face looks "FAT". I had previously changed the appearance on my own after the 9/10 update for free and I am extremely disappointed that the changes were made without prior knowledge and I will have to use gold bars to alter my appearance again to fix what the game has done to the character. The below pics are what has happened. Pic # 1 is what he SHOULD look like, pic # 2 is what you have made him look like. As you can see, they aren't even close. Pic 2 has "fat face". If you do not intend to fix it, I would like to be credited the cost to change my appearance again since this change was made after my "one time free" change

Here is their response:

Not to be that guy but... this obviously is not the case as evident of this thread, reddit and twitter.

I knew people were getting 10 gold bars, but I never expected the $400 too.  I'm curious if anyone else has received cash too like I did

400 dollars covers the cash the option so I guess they played it safe and offered you both.

Pocket-Fox's request:

Since the most recent patch for Red Dead Redemption Online (1.12) all player characters and models have since had facial features changed.

Specifically, faces have become wider and rounder. Even when attempting to customise or edit your character, using the exact same sliders as used in Patch (1.11) now in patch (1.12) show extremely different and unwanted results.

I have attached two screenshots of my player character, one 'Pre-Patch Face' shows how she appears in (1.11) and is how I want my character to look. The other 'Post Patch Face' is how she now looks in (1.12). No sliders have been changed and even altering the sliders, I can no longer make my character look as she once did.

I do not like this change and believe it to be an unintended bug as all player characters have the same problem of a wider/rounder face. I expect the character customisation to return the sliders/character appearance to how they were presented in version (1.11)

Just checked my toon...

still fat faced

Edit.

Ok, so R* have edited my face.... AGAIN

Since the alleged 'hot fix' her face is till wide, but now some features are taller such as nose/brows.

EDIT:

Okay, so I looked at my toon with her clothes from the previous outfit in the CC. And there is no change to her facial features since contacting support. Seems adding a shirt gives the appearance of her nose/mouth changing height somewhat. But she is still fat faced.

A simple fix to this is adding “Head 1, Head 2” options in the CC. Beta head, Patch head.

I’m really sad about this, I grew so fond of my character and now it just feels like I’n playing as someone else. I was 100% satisfied  and happy with my beta character after finally being able to do some minor tweaks last Tuesday. I hate this fat faced goon i’m forced to play with now. On top of that, I’ve spent at least $1600 today trying to fix his face because the changes don’t even stick when it puts you back into free mode. Don’t even feel like playing anymore.
