To be honest as much as I would like to see more roles added (as they most likely will be in time), I am more keen on seeing how our current roles evolve.

                          - Lawman

Bounty hunter -

                          - Assassin

Things of that nature.

Hunter/Trapper - set and inspect traps of various sorts, hunt legendary animals, pelts/furs as the role outfits

Fisherman/Fisherwoman - unlock canoes and boats, seafaring role outfits

Highwayman/Highwaywoman - rob trains and wagons, Ned Kelly inspired stuff as the role outfits (visual only?)

I'll go with fisherman, rancher and prospector.

Wild horses will/might be worth something, panning for gold will/might be a possibility and fishing will/might be a tiny bit exciting in the future.

Not the ones I'd necessarily want, but it's the next 3 roles I expect the most.

I Think maybe farmer or rancher since most cabins/houses is accessible by players for looting already...

One thing i would see is Davis Overland Dispatch missions where you take a passenger/s and valuable goods to a given destination on time and maybe could be robbed or ambushed by NPCs (or other players?)...

(Like the Franklin taxi service in GTAV...)

Non Funkable Token

Chose my preferred 3:

-Bank robber: you start as burglar, looting specific houses until you gain level to start preparing bank heists.

-Miner: could work as semipassive business like trader.

-Rancher: I'd merge rancher/shepherd/farmer into one. Expand the camp or let us own some proper terrain for once. It could work as the GTAO properties, with loading screen to enter the property so several players can own the same "ranch" at the same time. It'd take some minor changes to the map (like the transition from 1899 to 1907 in SP).

Although most of those roles on the list have something interesting to offer. Personally I'd leave monster hunter for an Undead Nightmare type of dlc, and the exotic/outlandish collectors sound a little redundant now that we've fence vendors AND Madam Nazar. The current collector role can be expanded upon new type of items if needed.

Meeting Albert Mason to get the Photographer role would be pretty fun.

I chose the feasible ones, the most representative of the setting and the ones hat would offer variety in gameplay:

Outlaw- This one its a given- rob trains and banks with your posse members. Piss easy to add and extremely fun to play.

Lawman- The counterpart to the role above, mantain order and watch over designated towns- you might even have to interfere in Outlaw players' missions.

Rancher/farmer- Work the land, farm resources buy and sell cattle... and once in a while protect your ranch from raids. Most of the features are already in storymode so it wouldnt be impossible to apply to RDO.

Photographer- Would be a nice siderole and easy to apply, much like collector.

Snake oil salesman would be great..  except our characters are mute and well, having a voice its a huge part of working in sales lol

The rest of the roles listed are derivative or dont offer much in scope of gameplay, what are you gonna do as a miner? Press X in a mine for minutes and die due respiratory issues?

Also, monster hunter... no, just no.

The Sullinator

I've been playing as a Native American since RDO launch.

The idea of a Native themed update seems awesome...But then at the same time I'd feel annoyed because then everyone would want to be Native Americans and I wouldn't be as unique.

Then again, I thought the same thing when I ran a biker cluv in the early days of GTAO, and it wasn't as bad as I thought when they made the biker update.

Bank Robber / Outlaw would be replaced to Thief

[off-topic]

Thief is better than the bank robber / outlaw

Thief can pickpocket people and rob bank or train or store

Undertaker should be in the poll.    Like an assistant to the Undertaker, you have to track down and recover the body of a high-profile individual before the people who killed him/her burn the body or something. It sounds pretty boring but it’s just suggestion.

Photographer would be very cool!  😁

I picked Weaponsmith, Fisherman, and Craftsman/Tailor.

Weaponsmith to introduce GTAO Gunrunning levels of weapon customization. Cutting down barrels/stocks, changing calibers, all that good stuff.

Craftsman/Tailor to introduce single player trapper levels of clothing customization, and beyond

Fisherman because boats, offshore fishing, and the system itself needs a full overhaul that a role would do a fantastic job at bringing. Trophy/Legendary fish, a new weight system, specialized role ranked rods and tackle/lures.

Outlaw.

f*cking ridiculous we can't rob trains, carriages, stores, or banks....

Outside of the 'Outlaw missions' there isn't really much 'outlaw' things to do.

^^This x3000.

Also I'd like to be able to catch, break and tame horses just like in single player.

Plus being able to train them and teach them tricks (probably would work like a horse skill level which you can improve over time by working with the horse, similar to bonding) and then be able to SELL them.

Many of the Role ideas in the OP are good, but ...

  • Monster Hunter - Werewolves, Sasquatch, Vampire Bats, Leviathan ...with Bradly Bros. Circus

Isn't it too soon for Red Dead Online to stray from the concept of verisimilitude?

Indeed.

There's still a lot of cowboy stuff we can't do. Can't prospect, can't rob trains/carriages/store/banks/boats....

I don't see the need to delve into the supernatural, yes it would be cool to see the Undead Nightmare horses, but other than that, no thanks.

I think majority of players want Mexico, not aliens/zombies.

Let's smuggle stuff across the border! Or join up with the army and hunt rebel scum! Mexico provides a lot of potential

Yeah, it's jumping the shark a bit too soon.  However it's sort of the elephant in the room as it's a companion topic to Zombies.

  • 3 weeks later...
  • Photographer: I think photographer would be an awesome idea since you can collect some impressive scenery, fights between a bear and a wolf, a chase, a bank assault, etc. I'm aiming more at the dynamic side of photography rather than photograps of buildings and places; more in the vein of National Geographic or war photography (pictures from war zones) or even sport photography (races etc). I think there are so many options to keep the path interesting and always to find something different to capture;
  • Deputy - Sheriff - Marshal: a job where you could level up and get your ranks up as well; it will be interesting if you could feel that your efforts are acknoledged not just by getting money or xp points, but a title, and all that comes with that...
  • Outlaw: same goes for this one as with the one above where you can go from a pickpoketer and small time thief to outlaw - criminal - wanted - gang member - war lord etc...

The possibilities are endless... drooling :)

Most of the stranger missions are robberies, kidnappings and assasinations lol

Thats pretty lawless i dont know

Photography definitely will be one I reckon.

How would it work if there is a sheriff role and a outlaw role? Could you be both?

Imagine being an outlaw robbing trains whilst being a sheriff.

Taxidermy is a cool concept. Get to decorate your camp with some wolves.

I want a job/ role, where you can catch wild horses and sell them. And i want a job/ role where you steal coaches/ wagons and sell them (or keep them for yourself)

This is where I'd like the game to go with roles.

Show both sides, positive and negative honor.

As you stated, bounty Hunter can be either lawman or assassin's

Traders can use Cripps to either produce law abiding fur merchandise or use Cripps to make illegal weapons to sell on the black market.

Collectors could either find stuff in the open free world, or forced to steal from owned establishments that may be guarded by the law

And depending on which you do, you would either become more or less honorable

Gambler seems almost guaranteed. It’s PvP like what they like, so you can’t blow through it too quickly. Plenty of items and clothes and cheating skills that could be unlocked.

Think about it, you unlock cheating skills, but you can’t just use them with impunity. Say you can only use them once a round, and have people have the ability to call you on it if they catch you doing it. If you get caught, you get dragged into a quickdraw event with the challenger. If you win, you keep their buy-in+earnings and leave. If you lose, they keep yours. Have the cheats be really minor things like holding an extra card. Gives major incentive to NOT cheat.

It also gives them the option to add more gambling games. Blackjack and dominoes from SP, Liars Dice from Redemption 1, and even the classic card games Faro and Montebank [which were actually more popular in the Old West than Poker], along with the more historically accurate 5 Card Stud poker.

Beyond that, I like my idea for a mechanic role better. Introduce cars, motorcycles, and bicycles to purchase. Bicycles available from the start, and can be repaired with the earliest rank unlocks. Later unlocks unlock motorised cars and bikes, with the skills that’re unlocked being built around increasingly complicated repairs. Lowest repairs just being minor things like tightening bolts to just make it functional again if you break it, whilst the highest ranks being completely repair it regardless of the physical damage. And further, being able to fix other peoples’ stuff if they’re not high enough rank to have the skills yet. For a fee, of course. Have a few petrol, steam, and electric models including lorries that can carry plenty of pelts.

Whatever Rockstar picks, I'm more curious now what they'll include that fundamentally affects the game.  They already gave out larger satchels and extended Eagle Eye for example.  Is the bulk of Roles just going to be clothing, emotes, some weapon variety, and maybe a skill tweak?  What's left of the core gameplay mechanics that could benefit any Role?  Maybe something like ... long swimming stamina?  Maybe this would be good poll topic...

The issue with PvP card games is that it is really easy for sh*tty players (and those who do not know how to play properly) to game the system by constantly raising/max betting/pushing all in. Bluff or not or just being a dick... the game's RNG is not very rewarding when it comes to plays like that. As someone who plays high stakes poker in casinos multiple times a year (and plays around with friends) I have yet to see any proper hand with a high pot that was not forced by a max bet or constant raising by someone who got lucky with an off suited low card.

It would be more likely to have AI opponents that have a dynamic difficulty and RNG system that changes depending on how deep you go in that role.

As for this mechanic... hell no. Vehicles (automobiles) have no place in the game. On top of that Rockstar would have to build an entirely new game mechanic designed around RDR 2's world, systems, and physics which differ greatly from GTA V and even more so from RDR where they cut them from the game. Yes, engine is the same, but the game was not built at all with those systems in place and would be a rather large undertaking. You are also talking about progressing the world well into the early 1900's, which does not seem like to M.O for Rockstar with Red Dead Online. Sure, they did it with GTA V by progressing the Online timeline past the initial pre-story, but also keep in mind that Doomsday was more than likely singleplayer DLC.

WThat’s exactly what R* wants. Idiots pissing away their money because they have no concept of strategy.

they have about as much place in the game as collecting flowers and old bottles, and the city of New Orleans. In the US in 1899, there were at least 50 different car manufacturers. Several in Denver and New Orleans. We outright have NO in-game as St Denis, and much of New Hanover and Amberino is based on Colorado. Redemption 2 runs on the exact same engine as GTA. People have modded Redemption 1 to let players drive the cars in that game, and nothing breaks.

in a recent interview they talked about how later down the line they want players to be able to buy properties and run major businesses. If I’ve got $30,000 in 1899, and I’m based out of the major port city of St Denis, why WOULDN’T I be able to own a car? People didn’t buy them back then because they were expensive and people didn’t trust them. Well, I’ve got money and I do trust them. GTA lets people buy and fly lear jets and yachts and luxury helicopters, there’s no reason to not let us buy period-correct horseless carriages in an era where it was possible to do so. There’s even an advert for a small gasoline buggy in Tumbleweed saloon, selling for about $700 if I recall.

I could see outlaws and marshals being a thing.

Cops and crooks -ish kind of free mode potentially, choose a side and you get random free mode missions or relevant stuff to your role. Marshall's can assist with prisoner transport while outlaws try to free prisoner. Maybe set amount of lives per person in free Roam mission/event.

Possibly train transport or robbery, ai npc can do boring sh*t like driving train perhaps or have a few disposable ai that back up each side. No player tags as well perhaps for more immersiveness.

I chose rancher but If it was to be implemented, it would probably be in it's own instance or very difficult to do. Plus imagine someone shoots a dynamite arrow into your group or cows, they'd just become steak
