Having to Mash Sprint to Run On Horses and What We Can Do to Help Change That

You seem to be forgetting that this is a video game. Realism is great up to a point but once it begins hurting the gameplay, thats when you're suppose to pursue it no further. RDR2 isn't a simulator and never will be, this latest update they added several things that made it more gamey than realistic.

I think it' one of the few things keeping the game interesting.. just like having to cock your gun before each shot.

I like that kind of realism. That's also what makes a game like dayZ one of my favorite. Not only do you have to manually put the magazine in your gun, you also have to manually load bullets into your magazine and have to manually change gears when driving cars.

Without that kind of realism in both RDR, and DayZ, you might as well just play halo, gta or another crappy shooter game imo.

Yeah this makes my thumb ache. I don't want to injure it, so will have to just use the cinematic camera.

But then I can't even control my horse without killing my thumb? Doesn't seem like great design.

I really like stealing wagons from time to time for long stretches. Gives some variety driving something different and you dont wear down your horse scores or stamina gauges.

And once you get on your regular horse st the end of the trip, it feels much much better.

DayZ is a mod of the Arma series, the Arma series of which is a simulator that is designed to reflect reality as much as possible. Thats the whole point of a simulator. You're trying to compare apples to oranges with RDR2 and DayZ. One is a simulator, the other is not. Look at taking damage for instance. In Arma you can fall unconscious, bleed out, and you need to apply bandages to stop bleeding and blood bags to recover health. in RDR2 you just pop a tonic and you're right as rain.

Aah it's a zombie simulator.

Didn't compare them, just saying that details like that of DayZ, and having to cock your gun and kick your horse manually in rdr is one of the main things keeping it interesting.

I like it the way it is. Tip:

If you're traveling far and you don't want to use fast travel, you can still ride there full speed without mashing the button. Set the waypoint, wait until you have a straight piece of road in front of you, start mashing the button as quickly as you can while holding down the touchpad to start cinematic mode.

Your horse will keep riding full speed and you can put down the controller. I hardly even fast travel anymore.

EDIT: As an added bonus, you can then hold Options to bring up the map to keep an eye of where you are or if there are players nearby etc.. Or check your progress or, well, whatever.

Every normal game strives for realism up to a point. That is one job of developers is to find that line where realism begins to hurt the experience, and once that line is found to never cross it. Simulators are the only exception, they try to resemble reality as much as the developers are capable of doing so, down to the tiniest of details. While these simulator elements may be enjoyable to you, they're not for everyone. Its why Simulators are treated as a genre in of themselves instead of being lobbed in with others such as Call of Duty or Battlefield in Arma's case.

I fail to see how having to mash sprint for several minutes straight somehow makes the ride more interesting, how I see it is that it requires more intentive attention from you since there is a sort of rhythm you have to maintain. More than what holding down a trigger requires. No more or less interesting than what driving is in Gta as far as I see it. You're traveling from A to B all the same.

Running on horses is not a button mash fest. Noobs might do that if they don’t understand it, but there is a rythemic pattern when it comes to horses maintaining top speed.

Watch some horse racing and you’ll see them snapping the reigns in a similar pattern required for the in-game horses to maintain their speed. One could even throw spurs in there somewhere. The button pressing simulates that successfully imo.

Well sorry but I disagree.

I like the manual git git system and getting from a to b, would be closer to being just as boring as in gta5 if it was just about holding a button imo.

It would be pretty simple. Tap till you’re at a sprint then hold or press two buttons at the same time to go to sprint or hold the current speed then 1 button to cancel it. The brake button. Pretty simple.

Exactly. R* may end up with players developing carpal tunnel syndrome. This is a serious issue. Cinematic mode is not the answer because there are too many missions and interactions that require attention and speed.

Why does everyone run full speed all the time anyway. Horses IRL cannot run all out for mile after mile.

Maybe because this game has a really freaking huge map and how it may take as much as ten minutes or more to reach your destination sometimes, even when running at full speed. Cinematic is not a fool proof alternative either. If you're not ramming into the occasional passerby, you will instead get mauled by any critter that happens to be near the road. Just yesterday I was traveling somewhere in cinematic mode when to my misfortune there was a grizzly near the side of the road. My horse came to a dead stop on the road and I didn't notice till it already bucked me off. It didn't end well.

If you need to travel from one end of the map to the other, why not relog to a session within the area you need? Much faster than riding your horse, even if you end up at the opposite side of the area you need to be in.

This is a thread about pressing a button in a video game being inconvenient? It's almost as if we exist in a world where people have never played Daly Thompson's Decathlon, or California Games :D

Agreed was just complaining about this in game today after lengthy session. Hard on the thumb after a while mashing it to sprint everywhere.

Largely cause of what the game does when you specify what zone you want to spawn in, since the game has this obsession to put you into sessions with tons of players in the area that you specified. Last thing I want is tons of players around when I plan to do a trader sale in the near future for example.

Do local sales. You'll never have to deal with other players and the delivery points are near. Local sales missions have put me in a solo session so far and 99% of the players who I have seen in this game leave you alone.

They were trying to be realistic. If you spur a horse, it’ll get up to a gallop. But it won’t stay that speed for long. You have to keep doing it to keep it going. Of course, horses can’t run that hard for very long [even the best race horses can only hold a top speed gallop for about a mile] so will slow down even if you keep spurring. The horse will get very agitated very quickly and probably throw you off if you keep spurring past that point.

Rockstar have made it so you can basically gallop indefinitely, which is why you have issues with your thumb getting tired mashing the button. In reality, especially with mundane riding horses like we have, you’d never put one in a gallop for more than a few seconds. They’re just not bred for that sort of stuff. Not to mention how uncomfortable and exhausting it’d be for you to ride like that all the time. Instead, it was walking or trotting 95% of the time. Us having the horses gallop full speed constantly is like how in GTA we drive around at full throttle in supercars all the time.

My advice? Just don’t ride as fast. You can put the horse into a canter and just hold A and it can maintain that indefinitely with no further input from you, despite how unrealistic that is as well.

I got RDR2 on PC. It is funny that you can just hold sprint(shift) on the keyboard and he keeps sprinting. I got myself a xbox one controller today. s how I found this. because it is annoying to tap to sprint and was looking for a solution. Well. As of march 2020 you still have to tap to sprint for horses on controllers..

Well, driving in GTA is much more engaging than riding a horse in RDR , so they don't need to do that.

It's only as engaging as you make it out to be.

To maintain true top speed, just tapping X won't do.  Just like in GTA, going full speed all the time isn't the best option when navigating turns, traffic, pedestrians (optional, but I hate cleaning blood off the broken windshield), obstacles, etc.

RDR is different because you need to actively engage a living animal, and to maintain true top speed through any environment you need to make use of the horse controls to actively make them move how you want them too.  Try going as fast as possible through Tall Trees just by tapping X...it won't work.

Of course, you could always just enter cinematic mode and get your horse up to top speed to maintain it (and every couple minutes give them a stim).  You'll slow down around turns, but at least you'll travel very fast on roads.  If you want the best top speed on and off road though, just like GTA, you need to be active with the controls.

Yep, and as a controller user on PC I must say it's super awkward to try to hold down Shift with my left pinky while holding the controller and trying to steer. But I am afraid the tap to sprint was destroying the poor A button on my elderly 360 controller.
