Yakuza: Like A Dragon

Recommended Posts

ciel

One journey ends, a new one begins. A brand new story in a new city, featuring new characters, along with a completely revamped combat system. All on top of everything you already love about Yakuza.

RGG Studio's Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Coming to the West in 2020! Only on PlayStation 4.

https://likeadragon.sega.com/

For the first time in the franchise's history Yakuza: Like A Dragon will have turn based combat, inspired by the JRGP Dragon Quest. This has rubbed long time Yakuza fans the wrong way while others will be delighted to give it a chance. New to Yakuza games or not, feel free to discuss past games etc.

The turn based combat system should've been made a mini game, like the clan creator in YK2/6.

Still looks good all round tho, I'll be getting it.

I've never played any of the Yakuza games, are they worth it? There is a Big in Japan sale going on right now on PSN.

I do think it's weird they opted to go for turn based combat when they have a much bigger audience now. You'd think they'd want to stick to the formula. I feel like turn based is much more niche, at least I'd opt to try out the other ones first over this.

Definitely try them out. Start with Yakuza 0 though. There's also Judgment which easily gets GOTY.

And yeah, going turn based is a weird move. Especially this far in, and also when the combat system we have is already pretty decent.

Yeah most definitely. Started with 0 earlier this year and been gradually playing the games as they come out (thankfully it’s possible to own essentially all of them on PS4 now). They manage to always balance the seriousness of their main story with the absurdity of their sub stories. 0 in particular actually has some pretty heartbreaking moments. To explain the franchise a bit more

0 is the prequel to the series

Kiwami 1 and 2 are remakes of the first two games that came out on ps2 (2 in particular uses the dragon engine that RGG started using with 6)

3-5 have been remastered for the PS4 as part of a bundle (within The bundle, 3 has been released, 4 is being released next month, and 5 is coming in February)

6 is the end of Kazuma Kiryu’s (the main protagonist of 0-6) story

There’s also spin offs such as Judgment (which takes place in the same universe and city, but has an entirely separate cast of characters and you play as a detective) and Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise. Both of which I’d say are also pretty good (Judgment in particular is fantastic)

Still don’t know how to feel about the change, mainly because of the fact that it’s a mainline game. We’ll see, but still, going from an action beat em up to turn based combat is, definitely something strange

Turn based combat and this new character put me off completely. Gladly there enough Yakuza games and they quite long enough to spent time with until better days. No Kiruy no buy:). Also to add this new character probably not smokes like a real man, and calls trans with "it", that's for sure.

Hope one day Yakuza series will get spiritual successor with a little bit of Sleeping Dogs. A perfect combo to live and die for. All depth of Yakuza and all passion of Sleeping Dogs.

I'm pretty interested to see what they do with the turn-based combat. I used to not be into those combat systems but after playing a few games that had them I enjoy them a lot now. I heard the developers say they wanted to try something different with the series with this entry and see how it goes. They also said they are willing to go back to the old combat system if the turn based one doesn't work out.
