Summer update. Expectations vs reality

Now that the update is finally here, is it what you expected it to be?

Honestly, after seeing the screenshots and trailer, i was expecting TONS of clothing items. Little did i know that the outfits are not customizable, and you cannot buy each clothing piece independently. Really, really disappointed in that.

On the plus side, the PvP part of Trader pursuit (pursuit which itself is kinda boring) is not that bad, and you can choose to play pve only, which is nice. The $$ loss for avoiding pvp is not that bad. That was pretty surprising for me, tbh. I like that.

The shorter animations are ... well, good, but i was hoping the looting / carcass strapping etc animations could be accelerated by pressing a button, not removed completely. Not a deal breaker for me, but would've loved to still have the original ones, if you wanted to.

The outlaw pass is nice, especially for the 25% pursuit xp, straight from rank 1. It's like the only reason i bought it. Also, i gained like 13 ranks in a single play session, so... it's really not that bad. Again, positively surprised.

The camp dog is, well, just a dog that stays in camp. I expected that, but feels like a missed opportunity.

The fact that you cannot whistle your horse while skinning is stupid and annoying, really wish they hadn't done that.

All in all, it's not a bad update, but honestly, i was expecting a bit more from it.

What are your thoughts on the summer update, after 1 day of playing?

personally, I have been liking the trader role, with one niggle.

it seems to me that the money earned for the time invested is too low. I can make more money from hunting and selling the pelts to a butcher than I can from hunting and donating & selling the goods.via the trade role in the same time frame.

the outlaw pass isn't as grindy as I thought it would be, I think I'm on rank 13 or 14 already, and I think it will pay itself back well before it comes to an end.

Save for the locked "skin" outfits and the weird, new movement, it's a pretty fun update. I have stuff to work towards and I don't feel like living in an empty world, at least not as empty as the beta.

I'm sure this feeling of whimsy is probably gonna die in a few weeks, but for now I'm having fun.

I haven't tried since the update but before even tho you didn't hear yourself whistle your horse still heard you. Not sure if you meant even that has been taken away.

It's too early for me to "review" this Update, but my impressions after day one:

- The character redesign is great! After running around as an ugly a** motherf***er for 9 months, I finally created a good looking character. Which in a weird way makes the game more enjoyable

- The new movement and PvP changes are really good, gunfights are more fun now, PvP is more enjoyable

- I made 150$ yesterday just by selling my old jewelry

- Treasure Maps now give more items, even clothing, and I stacked up on 13

- The new Role system is great. You don't "change" your role in the player menu, like in GTAO, but you naturally do the activities of each role at the same time. For example I supply my bussiness, then Cripps goes to work. During that time I collect some artifacts I want on my way while I hunt a bounty. Free Roam is just more alive now with the Roles content and the new dynamic events. The camp is finally useful and alive too! The labrador, the stew pot etc....

- The Outlaw Pass and Role Progression is great too. It's not too grindy but gives even me some incentive to get XP again, as I'm already rank 142. The custom outfits you can name and the new clothing option just give everything more personality.

- My only negative points are the somewhat expected technical issues and the fact you can't use single clothing items from the new outfits. I won't wear these new outfits, because everyone looks the same. But I would gladly use "Charles shirt" and combine it with my individual outfits. Hopefully in terms of dripfeed we get new single clothing items in the weeks ahead.

Which is weird, because if you "whistle" and look at the radar, the horse icon blinks the way it would in the regular situation.

The way it is now makes it look like a bug.

The biggest glaring issue for me is still loosing horse (now horse and cart) inventory on disconnects.  Know this is an issue because I lost a horse load yesterday to one.  Makes the hunting cart a useless idea since the risk in filling it is too high.

I don't get disconnect often but if I do it's always with a horse loaded with damn pelts, lol.

Horse not coming while you whistle when harvesting is an annoying change.

Accuracy with rifles is lower now.  The recoil is bigger.  Makes sense, but takes some adjustment to get used to.

If those outfits really can't be modified that's horrible and I won't buy one.  None of them would I want to wear without making some changes.

Trader missions don't pay enough but the amount of extra exp you make kind of makes up for the loss of money.

Collector should be able to have more than one map active.  Used them all, apparently lost them except last one.  Awesome.

Skinning animation is still too long.  Wish there was a way to skip/speed it up most the time.

Looting animation is better now.

Overall a good update.  Few issues but it's a good step.

Really enjoying the outlaw pass.  My horse looks awesome in his new mask!

Pros:

Loving the new content. Tons of stuff to do now, with the roles and new stranger encounters.

Looting and stowing are quickly done and over with. Nice. More stuff to loot too.

Faster combat.

Disconnects aren't as bad today as yesterday.

Cons:

Trader doesn't pay enough.

My character moves like Benny Hill now.

Pretty good update. I'm a bit disappointed there isn't a bit more general clothing but that's a small thing. Combat is going to take a bit of getting used to but yesterday it felt a bit better. I've only tried the bounty hunter role so far and the missions are ok. Nothing that interesting yet though. Really just a gang hideout where have to deliver a person/body afterwards. A couple of bugs to fix with it too because a couple of times the missions just ended for no reason. I've also noticed that the places I was in were a lot more populated. I guess because people are hanging out more at the mission start points.

Still cannot spawn at the camp.  Huge fail.  The spawning of the camp is improved.  Also, I had a strong inclination due to all the complaining about slippery, despite it being overblown, that the game would be vastly different.  Its PIB for now in PVP...I have not tested Slippery, but the fact that lock on is allowed...maybe its still ok, but it seems like PIB will be allow for accuate aiming on a slippery players.

So far I'm happy about most things.  The outfits not being individual pieces sucks and is a HUUUUUUUUUUGGE let down.  The broken whistling-while-skinning is a bummer but not a major deal.

I've liked doing the Trader and Bounty Hunter missions.  Although the long sell missions for Cripps seem totally not worth it.  Not even in the fact that you're more vulnerable to attack, just it takes like 10+ minutes to drive that damn wagon so far, it feels like a waste for only +25% profit.

My expectations probably couldn't have been lower TBH. But this is proving to be a great addition to the game for me.

Still early, but looking good. :)

Yep, one of the options on the Online home screen should be spawn at Camp seeing as its now the centre of our Online world.

Expected to option to remove/reposition second holster.

Expected the second holster/s to match colors with matched gun belt.

Expected old man jones (Arabian) horse added.

I would like a quickdraw revolver added, it probably pointless. Meh, I like how they look..

My horse saddle bags are floating from my horse it looks strange...

The character fast movements is funny I am sure they going fix all these bugs or adjust them..

everything else is wet.

There is, the same method as in rdr. Park your horse between you and the dead animal and press skin.

Im happy with the update, except for the annoying automatic switches between "offensive/defensive mode", which is probably a bias from R* side...

The world feels much more alive with new stranger encounters...

Spoiler

Everything from rescuing hogtied people on a horseback, to rescue a person in need due to aggresive animals, as coyotes and cougars.
Even stray dogs call your attention sometimes, and injured animals leaves loot when you kill them by mercy...

The collector role is somewhat difficult, due to the fact that there is "no clues where the wagon is" (respawns daily?), and some players "spawncamping/killing" outside of Madame Nazars wagon, (which probably would be at a peak during the weekend)...

Otherwise I enjoy the update, (now are we only waiting for properties to buy, so we can start farming).

I expected:

  • 3 New Roles with kit unlocks that are "unlock the privilege to purchase it"
  • Club Membership with rewards directly unlocked
  • New Showdown Type
  • 3 Role Specific Daily Challenges

What we got:

  • 3 New Roles with kit unlocks that are "unlock the privilege to purchase it"
  • Club Membership with rewards directly unlocked
  • New Showdown Type with a Freeaim only variant
  • 9 Role Specific Daily Challenges
  • New Random Encounters, some of which are copied/pasted from single player

The update endedup exceeding my expectations. I was taken back the first time I rescued an abducted Saint Denis Police Officer from a group of Lemoyne Raiders. Nelson mentioned that they were planning on getting Red Dead Online "back up to the level of immersion that we were able to achieve with single-player." Putting single-player's random events into Red Dead Online is one way to bring back that immersion. Especially when the new random evens can be done mid mission. I've stopped a few times now mid bounty hunt/random encounter/resupply/sell to tackle a random event. It mixes things up by adding an unkown PvE variable and a new challenge. Can you stop and complete the random event while still having enough time left to complete the mission you were already doing before the random event distracted you?

I'm surprised that that part of the update wasn't given more attention. They easily doubled the amount and types of encounters:

  • Abandoned Wagon
  • Explorer*
  • Free the Hostage
  • Rescue Stranger from animals
  • Stray Dog
  • Treasure Map posted on a tree
  • Treasure Hunter selling his Treasure Map for $5 (pretty sure it's the same NPC from single-player)

*The Explorer I came across "accidentally" fell to his death. I was able to loot the Treasure Map he was previously looking at from his corpse.

It's amazing the change Red Dead Online underwent in 2 updates. I can't wait to see what the next two updates bring.

This is actually a good update. Didn start bountyhunter yet. For collector im obviously to impatient haha. Trader fits me best. The only issue i have with this update are still the disconnects (which effects most the trader role). Other than that - i dont even know anymore what to do as its so much to do now :)

Yes it does. I'm doing it all the time. I just keep the whistle command pressed for a second or so. My horse will always come to me while I'm skinning.

Expectations:

many losses of horse cargo due to x20010006. Unstable game.

reality:

none of the errors have occurred after the dlc dropped. The game seems solid now.

Kinda makes me think the game is out of beta for real now, instead of 4 months ago.

Trader sucks ass

Bounty Hunting is better than imagined and feels so heckin awesome, finally I feel bad ass

Collector can be confusing, but is quite entertaining.

Annoyed most content is behind premium currency payalls or grind

Annoyed role outfits can't be customised

Annoyed no private servers and disconnects are still a thing

Happy with the new movement mechanics

Game feels more alive and fleshed out now

I agree with this 100% however the way I see is is I'm just doing it till I get the stuff that will make solo hunting way more lucrative. I can already hold twice as much meat and soon I'll be able to hold twice the feathers and thing too, plus the wagon. Once I've maxed trader I'll be moving on and just hunting as normal with pimped out capacity.

I enjoyed it so far. Went ahead and unlocked all 3 roles and grabbed the outlaw pass.

Like a few said, the fact I can't customize the role outfits irks me a lot. I was excited to get clothing items that could make me stand out but we get cookie cutter outfits. Shame.

The roles themselves rock. BH feels very slow in leveling, especially compared to the collector role. Few bugs in earning exp as well, but for now it's only been on BH and for 2-3 bounties before it's back to normal. (Still stupid and frustrating, but not as bad as it could be.)

The control and responsiveness part is fine with me. Some things still feel a little quick, but it rolls up nicely to a faster pace gun fight. You really notice it in large PvP.

I have a small bone to pick with the Sniper aim-assist though. I run with the Carcano in PvP, especially in wide open maps. Played Up In Smoke yesterday night in Great Plains and I have to tell you, using a scoped weapon now is VERY, VERY easy. Fine with me in terms of out of the box use I guess, but it's a little too easy now for a weapon that can down/kill a lot of players in one shot. Add the insane re-chamber speed and honestly I can lay out two rounds quick enough to kill the few survivors before they can hide. Might just be me, but I doubled my normal kills last night in a lot of games and I know I didn't just get super good lol.

Otherwise, everything else is nice as well. Added cosmetics, new horses (role locked but hey), few new random stranger encounters. I'm happy with it. 10/10 Would bang.
