What is similar to RDR

Recommended Posts

Vinaneedsagift

Hi everyone!!

I'm absolutely useless when it comes to PS4 games but it's my boyfriend's birthday today and I want to buy him another game.

He just played RDR and loves this game so much. You can probably imagine what I had to listen to when Arthur died.
My love is still grieving for Arthur.

But anyway - I'm looking for a bombastic recommendation for a new game for him.

Games he also liked very much: God of War, The Last of Us

Thank you very much for your tips!

What exactly did he like most about RDR2? And what games that you think are similar to RDR2 does he already own? There aren't a lot of Western games out there, and there are a lot of open world games to pick from.

I'm going to assume he's played most of the big Rockstar games, so I'd say.... The Witcher 3? It came out like 4 years ago but that's the only game I can think of that is comparable to RDR2 and isn't a Rockstar game. Also, I don't know if he already played it so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My other recommendation is Control, it isn't anything like RDR but it recently came out and is a really, really good game. I dunno...

I was going to recommend Call Of Juarez: Gunslinger, but I don't know if it's available on PS4. It's not an open world game, but it's pretty much the only non-R* Western released since RDR that I can think of (2012). As Edward Nashton said above there aren't a lot of Westerns and definitely not open world Westerns so you're pretty slim pickings I'm afraid outside of the Red Dead series.

LA Noire remastered maybe?

Also Red Dead Revolver is available on the PS4 through the PSN store.

There's Assassins Creed I recommend black flag, Unity, Origins, Ezio collection, and 3 remastered. But it's hit or miss and he might have played them already or hates them and wouldn't even touch them.

Like Edward Nashton said there's also Witcher 3 which is very very good. Get the complete edition unless he's played it already.

RDR2 is exceptionally great. It's a cut above most games, so any recommendations may pale in comparison. But to try help you along the way, I'll try offer insight.

What makes RDR2 great that your bf likes it to begin with? Well, I can't answer for him but I can answer for myself. I'm not the biggest fan of westerns. Yes, I like a good western film but I don't dream of living in the 'wild west.' However, RDR2 is one of my favourite games. So what is it? I think for me it's the level of detail in the game. It's based in reality too. While I like sci-fi, I love the idea that this game is routed in people. The human condition. It's also a period piece which I do love. It's like time travelling back to another era. You can walk around soak in the atmosphere, listening to what people are saying, read newspapers, read old adverts. There's a whole, world-building environment there that makes everything more believable and immersive. There's nice exploration in RDR2. You just don't know what you are going to discover next. Then of course, there's the great story. And RDR and RDR2 seems to pride itself on good story telling and the gameplay is great, as you would expect from a game made by Rockstar Games.

To summarize:

- Great world building/detail

- Exploration

- Period piece

- Great story.

So while, I think The Witcher 3 is a great suggestion, if your BF doesn't like some fantasy elements, it will be harder to like it. (Edit) Just read he likes God of War, so The Witcher 3, might be a good call. Or.. Perhaps an Assassin's Creed game might be to his tastes. Maybe Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. I'm going to go with another suggestion.

My suggestion is Mafia III.

It's an underdog story, rags to riches story,  about a returning war vet comes back from Vietman in the late 60's to take on the overruling Italian Mafia in New Orleans.

From Wiki:

Quote

Mafia III takes place within the late 1960s, within the fictional American city of New Bordeaux. Situated within America's southern states and coastline, the city is composed of island districts, industrial complexes and ports, high-rise offices and apartments, slums, suburban housing, and historical districts, interconnected by railroads and an extensive road network, with a large swampland separating the city from the coast. The city consists of a mixture of cultures including African-Americans, Irish, Italians and Haitians, and is mostly controlled by one mafia family – the Marcano family – alongside smaller organisations including the Irish Mob, Haitian crime lords, the "Black Mob", and White Supremacists

The game is by no means perfect but it's a period piece, with a top-notch cinematic story, set during a noteworthy tumultuous period in American History. The sountrack is great. Not sure if your BF likes Creedance Clearwater Revival.

Bonus recommendation:

If he liked God of War and The Last of Us, I would reccommend the Metro series.

It's a highly rated series by fans and critics. There are 3 games out now. But you can get him the first two as a double pack, remastered.

You may want to hide those spoilers by using spoiler tags.

Anyway, I would recommend Horizon: Zero Dawn. It's one of my favourite games of this generation. It's an open world game in which you can hunt, craft stuff, do challenges, do lots of side quests, it has a good story, and more just like RDR.

If he wants something like RDR, but also God of War and The Last of Us, then probably another 'prestige' AAA thing, with a cinematic look/feel, maybe a big open world, that sort of thing.

Definitely agree that Horizon: Zero Dawn would fit the bill - particularly since it has a similar sense of scale and environment to Red Dead.

Also with Mafia III - it's a long game, with a lot of repetitive missions, but the story is top-notch, and particularly for folk who like the period-specific nature of RDR2, and want something with a similar sense of time and place (Mafia III is really good at being about late-'60s America in a tangible way).

Similarly, if he's interested in a more stealthy thing, maybe Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - you've got some similarities to RDR2 (you can ride a horse through the desert, for one thing!), and similar moments of calm simplicity (like gathering plants for crafting), but the structure's more free-form, letting you tackle problems in all kinds of ways instead of just doing the one linear thing. Probably one of my top games of this entire generation, come to think of it.

I'm assuming he just finished RDR 2, Has he played the first two?

Surprised nobody mentioned the original Red Dead and sequel Red Dead Redemption? If not i'd suggest getting him those so he can play the first of the series they're just as good as RDR 2 but only issue is Red Dead and RDR are only on PS3/360 but if he does have a PS3/360 then get him those

Red Dead Revolver is on PS4, and RDR1 can be played on PS4 through PS Now and on Xbox One via backwards compatibility.

If you're looking for a game that is slow-paced, story-focused, full of uniquely made encounters and details, highly cinematic, open-world in a historical setting and with emotional moments, then I'd suggest Mafia 2.

Well then there you go @Vinaneedsagift get him the prequels to RDR2,

But if you are refering to an open world game like RDR2 then the sessions the others have made are good such as Mafia III, Far Cry 5, Ghost Recon Wildlands and Watch_Dogs 2 are all open world games
