A lot of complains about the game, make the right choice:

Its short development time I'd say. I voted for the map, but I don't necessarily mean its size but rather how that space is used.

I don't see many complaints about this game on the forums though, I think GTA Vice City is a universally appreciated classic. I still find the game enjoyable to play, along with the rest of the 3D trilogy.

Inadequate

The map without a doubt. There's a lot of space wasted on it. Like those big grass empty areas around with a just few palms or bushes. They could have put some buildings there or something. Even better, something interactive for the player.

I don't get the complaints for the map. While it's small it's still one of the more interesting maps in the series IMO. Tons of unique interiors to explore and the city looks gorgeous at night. Even the beach doesn't bother me that much and now I think of it I spent plenty of time ripping up and down in the BF Injection having a blast.

Anyway I guess it's obvious, but the lack of swimming is probably the only thing I'd consider a main flaw of the game. Especially considering the amount of situations where I've accidentally drowned and having swimming would've been appreciated.

Hasn't this been discussed a bunch of times?

The road layout isn't that interesting when everything is close the two main north-to-south roads. Even if I ignore the huge eastern beach, the Mainland has wasted space as well including a second smaller airport building and runway, the strip behind the Junkyard up to the stadium and many empty lots in Little Haiti and Downtown.

IMO 3D Liberty City had a better layout, and I'm glad San Andreas made the exterior world more exciting to explore, even at the expense of unique interiors.

Each to their own, but I really don't find the map to be that bad regardless of wasted space or not.

The size of the map, especially when you compare with the space visible on the global map, Vice City looks like a confetti lost in the middle of the ocean and a golden jail.

I agree with the above, I think a lot of map space is wasted and could be put to better use. Not a terrible map or anything, it's fine, but I prefer the maps of III and SA more.

For me, the upsettingly large map with lots of wasted space (how f*cking wide is it between ocean drive and the actual ocean Jesus f*cking Christ) and the fact that the greenwood is the only “boxy” sedan. Like daaamn son watch any movie from the 80s all the cars there are BOXY you got your caprices you got your Skylarks you got your LTDs and Diplomats and K cars too and we’re stuck with only a greenwood? Boo!!!!!

But magically, nostalgia or otherwise, despite those glaring problems that would turn me off to a modern game, it’s still a great game and a modern classic. I can’t wait to catch my kids playing Fortnite 3, scold them and tell them how Vice city was a better game and how I was a better adult because I played it as a kid, and throw them out into the cold.

Actually the Vice City map is bigger than Liberty City(from the 3D universe),but it dosen't feel like that because there are few roads(in specially in Washington Beach and Ocean Beach, and the beach is too big),Downtown and Viceport feel very rushed and Gator Keys shouldn't been just beta.

The map isn't bad, but I do think it could have benefited from being just a little bit bigger. Vice City has so much character and passion that it made up for it, it was such a vibrant and different setting than Liberty City. You can get around the map so fast that it makes it feel smaller as well. Games like GTA 3 and SA were pretty smart in how they designed the world and roads to make it appear bigger.

The only thing I can think of is that the west island is worse than the east one. Well, that and the lack of swimming.

I voted for Tommy's controls, purely for the lack of swimming. I've never been playing the game and thought how bad the map is, and I'm definitely glad there haven't been any votes for characters or graphics!

They were perfectly acceptable for the time, IMO. Unfair to judge a 2002 game by 2019's standards.

not judging by 2019’s standarts, judging by 2001/2002 standarts with the developers’ past games and some other games of other developers

Don't recall playing Vice City for the first time (or even now, tbh) and thinking, "damn, this just doesn't look good enough"

IMO Vice City for its time looked fine and at least as good as GTA III. I actually really liked back then how beautiful the transparent water was compared to the murky ocean of LC. I think San Andreas had less impressive graphics for its release date though I don't like to judge games based on their graphics.

I voted for the map. For me the map is one of its biggest flaws since there are some spaces not well used, there is nothing in that place or the place is unnecessary.

Example: A place where there is nothing is behind a green Hotel in Little Haiti where there is absolutely nothing, just gray floor. The beach for me is exceedingly large, I like more as it was in the beta. And many areas are not well used. The only areas where they were very well used were the Stadium, Escobar International Airport, Little Havana, the entire area of the Vice Point Essential Center, Leaft Links and Vice Point.

The way we control Tommy: It looks good for me to be from 2002.

Graphics and sound effects: For me, The Sound and Graphics are not bad either, In Sound it stands out more for its stations. Flash FM, Wilstyle, Radio Espantoso ...

The lack of good characters: I don't see why to judge this.

History and drama (very bad or not good enough): The story is very good for me.

And this is my opinion ... (They don't take it as criticism or wrong, I'm just giving my opinion).

The worst map in the whole series, small land surrounded by useless water when you cant even swim. A useless large beach that has no use in the entire game. 3 and SA had awesome islands, vc is just pathetic in terms of design ! Also the game feels like a short abrupt end after Rub Out. There is basically nothing fun to do after keep your friends closer. In SA you can keep having fun even after completing the whole story with so much to do map and feature wise. The only reason VC is worthy to me anymore is cause its easy to mod !

I think parts of the west island, like Little Haiti, were meant to look like sh*t but I think in general it still doesn't look as good as the eastern island. Also it feels much more of a chore to drive in the western island because the roads feel so much more elongated and winding.

As much as I love Vice City, I can't deny that the map kinda blows, even for a 2002 title. The first Island is alright, but Downtown and Mainland looks so rushed, which does show the game was made in under a year.

And where's the poll option for lack of swimming ablitly? This isn't a direct criticism to VC, but for GTA 3 and top down games as well.

My biggest issue with this were the controls, for flying in particular. I remember this mission with an RC bomber plane that was impossible (for me at least) to do the way it was supposed to be done. I ended up just driving it over land to the enemies and mow them down with the propellor.

tbh if vice city just played more like SA, (camera feel, driving, flying, ect) and wasnt so stiff, had no loading screen between the islands, and had more garbage, grass, and detail on the map. it'd be perfect.

The map is the issue as well as the story being (to me) really short.

I'd go for the way you control Tommy. When I pick up and play this game again, the most dated experience is the way you walk, jump, shoot and drive around. The lack of the GTA SA style camera, choppy walking/sprinting, simplistic shooting and lack of climbing really make it feel like the old game it is. I'd also file the lack of swimming under this category.

Official General

I love Vice City, and it remains being one of my best GTA gaming experiences ever. However, there are some things to point about it that could have been much better.

* The map is the main problem I had with the game. While the map was not exactly small, I did feel that significant chunks of the map’s space were badly under-used and not utilised properly. For instance the actual beach in Ocean Beach was unnecessarily HUGE - it felt like half a day to get from the sand to the sea water. If the beach was half the size it was, you could have easily fitted in more buildings and streets on the first island. The second island was badly designed in it’s own way with space too. The only residential districts on the second island was Little Havana and Little Haiti, there really should have been much more residential places than just those.

* The very stiff body movement and physics of Tommy Vercetti’s character. Yes it is a very old game, but something as simple as body movement surely could not have been that hard to improve on from III ? Even playing it now, I wonder how was I able to comfortably play with these physics years back then.

* The sparsely populated streets of many sections of the map. GTA III and SA did not have this as a major problem so I’m mystified as to why VC suffered from this. Thankfully I can fix this with mods, but this is about the original game.

* No swimming. Funnily enough, not my biggest criticism of VC, I can deal with that, it just sometimes became too much of a hindrance if you fell in by accident. But in a sense I still like it, because it becomes a challenge not get caught up in the dangers of falling into the water and drowning.

But it I still love playing VC and overall it is still a legendary, stunning game that I will always enjoy.

They were quite long on the consoles (XBOX/PS2) though, right?

edit: I guess this was only a thing on PS2
