Commander S
1 hour ago, Jason said: How characters are relatable must be the most misunderstood thing in gaming at the moment. You... don't relate to their gender or skin colour lmao. Good characters are relatable through their experiences, be it their backstory or events you playthrough in-game. For example, God of War was a story about being a father to a young son, which is why it resonated so strongly with many reviewers who were raising kids of their own. If you're someone who believes he cannot relate to a character who isn't your gender or race then that's a you problem, and something you should probably work on. Exactly - it's this magical thing called good writing. All you need to do is frame the narrative in such a way that the audience can view things through the protagonist's perspective (often simply by largely showing things from their perspective), and that's enough to make the audience go along with them. That's even true accidentally - like in one film where, in order for the two protagonists to disappear until a big reveal at the end, the third act is told entirely from the perspective of the main antagonist, who gets his own, worse antagonist as a foil. And as a probably-unintended by-product of that, you end up with the main antagonist becoming a relatively-relatable de facto protagonist, and maybe more sympathetic than they should be at that point, just because the framing ends up biasing towards them. Shows just how important the narrative is towards making a character "relatable", and not simply who they are, and how similar they are to the average viewer. Bobux
1 hour ago, Jason said: There are loads of terribly written male characters as well lol. It's not exclusive to one gender, poor writing is just poor writing. agreed, I feel like main characters who are women are always put on some incredibly high pedestal as to 'how it should be done'. the moment the character is suddenly unlikable everyone just attributes it to 'feminism/mary sue writing' and like...can't it just be that maybe much like the writing of male characters, its down to poor writing? Or even if they somehow 'look' different its enough to stir them into a rage like Abby from TLOU2 or Aloy having peach fuzz in Horizon. I genuinely never thought the debate over a femc in GTA VI would have to be a thing a decade ago. It sounds so absurd that people are up in arms over it as if suddenly the character writing of V is seen as good and that the addition of a femc will ruin the series with unrealistic attributes even though Trevor and Michael in their middle age did incredibly over the top antics beyond killing enough people to make the Las Vegas shooter jealous, I'm more surprised we never gotten one already before in the 3D universe. ngl I've never been more disappointed with GTA fans, bad enough people play the games with alot of the satire flying over their head, but going crazy all over forums and social media posts because the next game ***might*** have a femc latina protagonist is so beyond parody at this point I really don't get it.. Short Dawg
In all seriousness this is still Rockstar , I guarantee this chick is gonna be dope and well written to appeal to mostly everyone and besides according to that article it will still be a male protagonist by her side for the folks who solely don’t wanna play as a female the whole story Edited July 28 by Short Dawg gta_rulez
Malibu Club
I can actually get behind a female main protagonist. It'd be different. All they would have to do is treat her like a person instead of "LOOK! STRONG INDEPENDENT WOMAN!" Rockstar can be progressive with this if they want, but please PLEASE don't do it in a patronizing way that'll have even real life women rolling their eyes. We want Grand Theft Auto, not ResetEra Theft Auto. Xilurm

Yell that Rockstar is becoming "woke" all you want, say that you can't identify with a woman character all you want, make yourself look like sh*t to others all you want, but the moment one starts going on actual bigoted misogynistic and phobic rampages on this forum, using slurs or other offensive terms, you are no longer welcome here and will be banned like the guy whose 20 or so posts were just deleted. There is a line, cross it and you're out - no matter your tenure on this forum. May I also remind people there is a DEDICATED PROTAGONIST TOPIC for discussion about the protagonists. Thank you. I don't understand what people are saying either. Personally, I've always wanted a female protagonist. Yes, what can I talk about if I have a female character online, and very often online guys play for a girl and this is normal. Wakka387

BloxedRetro
23 minutes ago, motomami said: What is pandering to the market? Give me an example? I'm speaking about Disney. The new Star Wars and Marvel movies often just say "Look, we have a strong independent female, look at the bozo men! Buy our tickets!" and now sadly it's come to the point where any movie that has a female protagonist is just seen as "Woke BS" by the masses, despite having lots of great strong female protagonists then and now. Disney only care about profit and so they are more likely to pander to social movements and cultural preferences to sell tickets, such as when Disney shrunk down the Black Characters from Star Wars posters, and so chances are that their strong female characters are just made strong in order to get asses in seats. If Disney actually cared about their representation they wouldn't change it for different markets. Due to Disney's overabundance in characters like this, it's lead to a lot of people just saying that any independent and strong female in media is just woke pandering. I'm not saying it's woke BS, I'm just saying that a lot of people will see a female protagonist as BS pandering. I don't think it will be like that though. I think there will be a strong female protagonist however it won't be patronising. People will still see it like that though.

Jason
Her wording implies she was cast recently which makes me think GTAO more than anything. Perhaps a side character in GTA VI at most. I'd imagine that the protagonist(s) were cast years ago and have already been working on the game for a few years. I'm excited and cannot wait to learn more about her ... I really really hope she manages to give us a performance as brilliant as Roger Clark in RDR2. Same goes for the male main character of course but I guess we have yet to discover that one, right??? Edit: Maybe not our main character? Don't know, we'll see. This should make GTAVI a really fresh and unique experience imo, this is the very first time we get to play a female main character in a modern Rockstar game so I cannot wait to see how that plays out. I have no doubt it will be amazing though. If RDR2's main story and campaign is anything to go by we can all be rest assured that GTAVI will be the next masterpiece and emotional story delivered directly from Rockstar to us, the most passionate Rockstar fans out there. I honestly don't care much if this game doesn't make it into late 2024 at all but I really hope they give us a first teaser trailer and the official logo this October. The wait felt like an eternity from the original GTAV release back in September 2013 (9 whopping years in 1.5 months from now!) to now so I really hope Rockstar won't let us wait much longer for our first glimpse into the groundbreaking world of Grand Theft Auto VI. Even if we count RDR2's release in that has already been four insane years ago come this October ... it's kinda crazy to think about that it's already been four years since I first played this masterpiece (and it still hasn't been bettered in any aspect by any other videogame since)!!! It is really time for something new and fresh, so please Rockstar, make it Rocktober and crash the Internet by revealing GTAVI to the world!
