Genre Mind Changers

Recommended Posts

The Time Ranger

The title may seem a bit vague but I found it hard to word it right. Basically the idea is for somebody who isn't a fan of a particular genre, what film would you choose to change their mind about that genre. I'l add mine in later.

Hmm, I'd have to think for a lot of genres but I'll just go with my favourite which is Horror.

The movie I'm going to choose is The Invitation

The story is incredibly captivating early on and only gets stronger, the fim doesn't rely on jump scares like most Horror films, and I think it's one of those films that will appeal to people who don't neccessarily like Horror. It has Horror elements, but it's more of a mystery thriller if anything with a strong emphasis on the characters.

Quite an original idea for a thread. Nice.

I think for Sci-Fi, I would ask anyone about their love for films like The Terminator. I know plenty of people that love The Terminator but wouldn't exactly like Sci-Fi. I would use TT as a good example of them enjoying some science-fiction.  Moreover, The Terminator as an indie film too.  Indie doesn't always have to mean hipster comedy-dramas.

Margin Call, JC Chandor, 2011.

I would use this as perfect example of a good drama. Drama is broad. It's a kind of catch-all term. Life is drama. Capturing some aspect of life that doesn't go exclusively to horror or with tonnes of stunts and action (action) just goes in to "Drama." Margin Call is one of the best films I've watched in recent years. It follows the discovery of what will be the 2008 world economy crash.  Basically, it's when the first people find out it's going to happen and what they decide to do or not do with that information. Do they save the company by dumping all their stocks/bad mortages destroying people's lives in an unmeasurable way or  do they ride it destroy the whole company? It's really tense and has a stellar cast to boot.

Logan.

Superhero movies are all the rage nowadays, and have been for the last several years, and that's ok with me because I like them. They're a fun time, I watch them, enjoy them and forget about them. Logan stands out among them however. It's a drama first and a superhero movie second.

It has themes of aging, redemption, regret and death. It feels like a modern day western, which the film alludes to in one scene. From the desert landscape to the grizzled old man Logan, on one last ride. He's a reluctant hero, an archtype common in the western genre.

I think it trancends the superhero genre and is just a damn good movie, it's the only superhero movie i've seen that stayed in my mind for a few days, it's a fitting swan song to an iconic character. Even if you don't like superhero movies consider giving Logan a go. It's worth it.

This is a really good shout. I am personally in the boat that doesn't really 'get it' with Superhero films. I just often find them very boring. However, Logan really was quite an amazing film. It almost didn't even feel like a Superhero film at all which is likely why I enjoyed it so much. Plus, in some ways it felt like I was watching a Last of Us movie which I loved as well.

OK, OK, might have to give Logan a watch now.

So, the Rom-Com genre. Almost immediately, I write off the genre, but looking back, I have enjoyed a good Rom-Com, especially on a weekend when you are hungover and you just want something more wholesome, bit a funny and most likely a happy ending. There are some genuinely good films out there in the genre like Amelie, Once and few others. One I liked very surprisingly was When Harry Met Sally. Man, Billy Crystal in this movie is a champ. Meg Ryan too. I used to hate Meg Ryan but she's great in this.

The chemistry between the two is spot-on, the dialogue, everything.

I actually love romcoms and 'chick flicks'. I really have never fathomed why. A lot of guys hate them, or get forced to go along with their girlfriends or whatever. There's been a ton of them I've enjoyed on a whim. The most essential key to any of those films is the two main leads, if you can feel chemistry as soon as you start watching you know it'll be good.

Another I'd recommend is To All the Boys I've Loved Before. I randomly watched it on Netflix, and I'm not a huge fan of teen romance and it really surprised me by how good the story and writing actually was. Judging by the poster and plot you'd likely shake your head, but it's really charming.

Consider giving it a go, I know you're not a superhero movie fan but even if you don't like it persay, I think you might appreciate it from purely a film-making standpoint. Like I can appreciate classical music but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it except an occasional bout out of curiosity.

Try The Boys too, lol. (If got Amazon prime).

Honestly, it's funny as hell and really takes the piss out of the genre, very satrical of the commercialisation of superheroes and even current affairs with some really obvious jabs at many known favourites or sensitive issues. It doesn't rely on too much superhero stuff, some of course, but it's more about the corruption of a corporation and those looking to expose stuff. Karl Urban is genuinely having fun in his role, hamming it up with an almost Dick Van Dyk-bad English accent too.

It's not for kids, lol. It has a lot of strong filthy language, quits gory in places and a bit of nookie, it's got a bit of a Paul Verhoven 'trashy' feel to it I find too. For anyone not keen on today's current wave of superheroes at the moment, or looking for more of that Deadpool 'adult stuff' with it all, this show is a bit of a gem. :)

And a great best friend/sidekick too. My Best Friends Wedding has always been one of my guilty pleasures. Great chemistry between the 4 main leads, with Rupert Everett on scene stealing form. Just a fun movie that makes me smile.
