Is it me or are griefers getting worse

First post here, but have learned a lot from the forum so thank you all.  I've been playing GTA online for about 4 months now, but bought and beat the single player wayyy back in the PS3 days.  I hadn't played an online game since the OG Call of Duty and Battlefield 2 on PC wayy back.  Anyway, I finished RDR2 and messed around a bit online, then picked up GTA again for PS4.  About 1/3 of the way through single player I jumped online.

Love the game, it is veryyyy grindey for money but a ton of fun to try new missions, have fun in freeroam, but...maybe it's my luck and the last week or so I've been in consistently bad servers, but wow are the griefers maddening.  Yesterday, 2 different unaffiliated people [one driving some arena war looking thing] tried to crash my Phantom almost at the delivery point.  Somehow made it through that.  Got attacked on 3/4 vehicle imports this week and this morning a low level random who I was showing stuff to and helping to level up and get a few bucks got destroyed [at least by an a hole in a car not a broomstick] when delivering a modded car.  Same guy tried to wreck me too but I got away from him.  This afternoon, 2 broomstickers steal my import car as I'm fighting off the second wave of the guys in the desert [I normally just run but that far from the warehouse they'll cause over $12K in damage usually].  Deliver it to police station, then one of them proxy mines everywhere so that every time I spawn I'm killed and the other broomsticker can't kill me because he can't aim on the bike but keeps flying away to eat snacks after I almost kill him free aiming an MG [because of course why would you be able to lock onto a missile spawning flying personal $10K insurance vehicle]

This isn't specifically about the MKII Broomstick, but griefers in general...anyone else noticing an uptick or am I just unlucky?

I think you were unlucky on these sessions because griefers like that have been always present

I try to watch a lobby for a solid 5-10 minutes at least before trying to do anything substantive, but even with that I've had people just show up randomly and blow my stuff up for no reason.  Maybe I'll run a nightclub mission to start a session to see how griefey the lobby is because I won't care if it gets blown

^^. This.  Always check the lobby for whatever is goin on,  check player organization, if you see a bunch of mc’s there’s a good chance of multiple mk2’s about.  If you want a guaranteed peaceful place to do business there’s always the solo public way but griefers have been here since day 1 either using a tank, jet, armored car to now the mk2.

I'd say over half the players that still play this game have this dumbass "joker complex". You aren't unlucky, that's just how it goes. People are bored from grinding away, think they're supposed to blow up your stuff, or are assholes.

But, are griefers getting worse? Yeah, as the game goes on and the exploits and glitches become more mainstream, its only a matter of time when free roam is a god mode circle jerk.

I just don't get the point of being on a jet broomstick that is impossible to shoot down and going around killing everything in sight, especially knowing that people gunrunning or I/E missions have put time and effort into it and they're doing it to make money to buy stuff...it seems a lot of those knobs really like dressing up in full body lycra dayglo outfits and masks too.  Maybe it's little kids who don't understand the fabric of society yet, or tossers who just get off wrecking other peoples' stuff.  Just doesn't seem like it would be much fun with absolutely zero challenge involved.

It’s all bout that kd/r.  I heard you can put that stat on ur resume to make you look cooler in a job interview.  But seriously I have no idea why blowing up somebody’s work is fun or would benefit me in any way.

First, welcome to the forum! I also started as a lurker, and making the plunge has been a casual way of learning and discussing the game.

Second, and most important, are that griefers come in waves. Big DLCs bring them out in droves, and the ones who find/share ways to glitch and exploit the outdated coding run rampant after that new DLC smell wears off. They eventually fxck off when other big multiplayer titles come out, but there are many ways to counter.

1. Git gud

Learn their tricks, study their movements, and find ways to fight back. If you get good with a sniper? You're already on the right track.

2. Solo public

There are ways to force a session split and be alone, which you can find for each platform on these boards. This is the way many who want to grind in peace go about it.

3. Join a crew

Your garden variety griefer will prey on lower levels or small groups of players. If you share the same crew tag as many others in the same session, however? Those odds lower. Strength in numbers. There've been plenty of times where a griefer would be attacking a friend in another session and our crew would all join on them, providing hilarious 8-on-1 beatdowns until they ragequit. Even if you have no intent on going to war, a crew can come in handy to help with source/sell missions, Heists, or just people to goof around with.

Just, you know, avoid IGN/MP3. Nobody in those crews will help.

OK, "technically" it's not griefing, because the game popup says "steal the car for RP and money?"  Perhaps you're right, maybe we should just redefine it to being an asshat.  I guess I should go steal MC club supply runs because that's the same thing too, right?  Blowing up sell runs?  We all know what it is: It's negligible payout for wrecking someone else's work.  And when it's 2 people against 1, both on broomsticks, can't hit me when I'm on foot [thank God Rockstar hasn't allowed that yet] without one proxy mining while the other flies off to eat snacks in the air to come back so they can switch...

Just change your mtu to 700 when you're delivering product.

Buy supplies once then sell it.

Once you've made your money and want to mess around with co-op stuff then change your mtu back to normal (1500).

That way, you make your money unbothered but also get a chance to do co-op stuff.

Mate, these complaints have been done to death here. There seems to be a consensus that blowing stuff up for sh*ts and giggles is bad, with most players conceding that if you had to steal stuff from others, then that would be at least understandable.

If you get your IE car stolen then, you can’t really complain.

Man they'll tell you it's part of the game or git gud. For some reason they can't admit that negatively impacting a total strangers gameplay experience (especially strangers that have done nothing wrong to you) is what helps them sleep at night. When they say they "enjoy your salty tears" they really mean it, they legitimately like knowing they've annoyed you. That's the easy thing to understand, now the hard thing is understanding why they're like that in the first place. Me? I can mind my own business, but these f*cks just can't seem to understand "Hey maybe that guy doesn't want to get killed over and over again."

I end up lagging out sometimes on accident because of Comcast's stellar service but I'm not going to go through that much trouble and I'm on a PS4 not a PC so not nearly as easy to plug/unplug a hardwired ethernet line or duck into a menu and change MTU settings.  It is what it is, just seems like I've either been extraordinarily lucky through my first few months not getting F'd with too bad [maybe 1/6-7 times] or people are getting way more aggressive recently

I had all sorts of trouble at first. I started playing in December 2017, never bought a shark card, and found myself in your shoes. It was the Deluxo that everyone hated then which was easier to kill. My advice is to practice pvp a little bit every time you play.

I'm on PS4. Follow these easy steps for your own public lobby all to yourself for sales.

Settings

Network

Set up internet connection

Wifi or LAN cable (pick the one your using)

Easy or Custom (hit custom)

IP address settings (just hit X)

DHCP host name (just hit X)

DNS settings (just hit X)

MTU settings (hit manual)

Change your mtu settings to 800 then keep hitting X until it goes to "tests internet connection", test the connection then your good.

Load into online like you normally would and you should be in a public lobby all by yourself. You can't play other games or go into full public lobbies unless you change it back. To change it back when it goes to "Easy or Custom" just hit easy and test internet connection.

I'm far from awesome but am not a bad player, even in free aim, but trying to get the broomshafterz is almost impossible as they immediately dart away and can move any direction they want.  I wish the recharge for the drone was faster as that's the most fun I've had griefing the griefers...but it takes tons of time and I want to make money and have fun playing this game, not fight people.  This guy is my hero and one I aspire to be one day - worth the watch of all 5/6 videos they are pretty funny and well produced

A simple feeling of empowerment and control in an uncontrollable world. sh*tty bosses, dead end jobs, school bullies, asshole siblings, the Joneseseses, garbage news 24/7, etc. Or maybe they’re just generally awful individuals at their core and in their daily lives as well; fetish for Nolan’s Joker, “hurrr watch the world burrn huh huh.” R* has given them the ultimate Easy Button to offload that sh*t onto someone else. Just a game or not, stopping someone from doing something that they want to do while basking in the gratification of it when what they were doing was not in turn preventing you from doing what you wanted to do is generally sh*tty. Not everyone wants to play with them. Sometimes people just don’t have time for the Jack Russell f*cking terrier with a weak bladder. I wouldn’t look too far into it though. As soon as you try to comprehend it you’ve already lost. You’ll go mad.

Anyway. Where was I?

Oh yeah. As someone who plays daily and is in and out of public lobbies, my anecdotal experience is that griefing has mostly remained consistent over the last few years, before and after the introduction of the broomstick. If anything the stick makes it easier to see who to watch for. As @toguraum says, you may have just been unlucky. MTU and move on. It’s not you it’s them.

Not really sure about grievers, but cheaters have dramatically increased. They are even bold enough to use the cheats in missions now. As long as the cheat program can intercept any attemp to report them, It will get worse. It's the reason why I play alone most of the time.

i got an app for my router. i just need to hit "connect again" and everybody will leave the session. can even do it during a sale w/o losing connection and be able finish the sale. :)

Imo griefing is slightly worse, but not all that different from the way its always been, its just that these days there are that much more tools for these kind of people to (ab)use, luckily there's also plenty of ways to counter them or prepare for them. I very much wanna underline the earlier mentioned watch the lobby for a good 15 minutes statement as thats what works best for me and the people i play with, it will become clear pretty quickly if you can risk a sale or should look for a safer session. (also something i've noticed but im unsure how relevant is in your case: level, the higher my level the less attention i get during deliveries etc, that said im slightly over 750 now tho)

Besides that for deliveries etc, remember that there are often people happy to be bodyguard/part of your MC, so make use of them, and then have one or more of them act as backup for the cargo vehicle drivers (using broomsticks buzzards etc) and just accept that you will lose some cargo every now and then. If you dont have one already get an Akula (stealth heli) as it actually hides the cargo icon for stuff you hold on your person, and seats 4, while none of the off-radar stuff hides the cargo icon. For free-mode just accept that you will randomly get killed, learn to ignore it, if they persist then fight back for as much as you're comfortable with, learn their tricks (heavy sniper in first person, how to 'git guud' with broomstick, fully loaded ruiner and other brookstick counters, etc) but also just accept that some of them will be better, even without using cheats. Finally just realize that you are pretty much always in control about when its over, there is no shame in using passive or ghosting, going into an apartment for a breather, or switching sessions if they are really bad, who cares about the bs they say, be above their petty shiz, you have better things to do anyway (grind for money hehe)

Whenever I can I will steal I/E cars. When you go into the city in the direction of your garage (90% have the cheapest, idiots), I get off the radar, I wait and steal it. If it is high-end class I will take it to my garage, if it is very damaged or it is not high-end I will sell it to the police station. Easy and simple. I wish you could steal special cargo, bikers and bunkers supplies, like the hangar business.

Just go Ghost Organization next time. Or be carefull.

Having played from the start, on all 4 consoles, I'd say that griefing has gotten worse mainly because of the weaponized vehicles.

You could go back and play on last-gen, but the cheaters are just as bad there as the griefers are now. And I guess PC has the worst aspects of both.

Edit: I said that without having played in a while. Before the passive mode timers, griefers made public lobbies almost unplayable, but now they're pretty peaceful. It's probably not as good on the PC since you have cheaters, but on consoles it's like we went back to 2016.

I've been doing that lately for awards. I stickied 2 different players last night 10+ times each. So there's that. I don't kill people for KD though, I'm not that good.

this thread is destined to tread a sad and familiar path.

i don't think it's gotten worse, though, except maybe in the casino parking lot.    it's conceivable that i grief less often now than i used to.    unless i do.

and if you're daft enough to leave your avatar standing on the sidewalk in Vinewood, even for a minute, man, and you come back in the room to find yourself respawning, that ain't griefing.

p.s.    I made a character named Chump Johnson on xbox, who has a k/d of 0.00 and if you ever see him running in circles, or riding his BMX bike around a tree by the casino, feel free to kill him as many times as you want.    that's what he's there for.    (just watch out for the RC car that's probably lurking nearby in the bushes)

Are we really going through this yet again? Trying to define whether or not there are more assholes in the world in comparison to five years ago? No, not more assholes, but different strains of assholes riding around in different asshole-enabled vehicles. In fact, I can be a bit of an asshole myself when I feel like it. We don't need yet another thread on the merits or demerits of behaving like an asshole in your free time within a video game. Do what you like (and read some good threads while you're at it).
