Well, the final verdict is that the instability returned after installing the new hotfix driver. So at least for the time being, the NVidia "studio" driver (431.86) is the only driver I have been able to use and achieve stability. :(

thank you Tom. I created this account just to thank you. finally a solution

Since 431.86 is a studio driver and those are only for Pascal and newer cards, Maxwell users (GTX 9xx and 750ti) should try 431.60

https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/148865/en-us

431.60 is confirmed stable on my windows 10 1903 and gtx1080 combination. 431.86 was stable too but I removed it for a failed test run with the latest drivers and when I had to revert I chose 431.60 this time around to see if there's any difference.

14 October. And it is still not fixed. Using nvidia driver 436.48.

Rig: Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 Motherboard,
Intel i7 4790K 4.4 GHZ.
Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB,
12GB 1600mhz DDR3 Kingston Hyper-X Genesis,
Primary 128GB Samsung 840 Pro Drive, Secondary Samsung 840 Pro 256GB Drive, Third SSD drive 1 TB Kingston A400. (GTA 5 ''Steam Libary'' is installed on third drive) and using Windows 10 Pro 64Bit.

Game crashes to desktop every 30 min to up to 2 hours time. Never had a issue before Casino update. SP works fine with Network adapter disabled. R* should fix the problem asap before people stop playing the game for good.

I downgraded my GeForce driver to 431.60 and switched my Direct X version from 11 to 10 in Settings. Not sure which was the key, but GTA5 doesn't crash anymore

Edit: I also have VSync on with frames set to 60FPS

I just installed GTA 5 after a dozen months time. I was playing for about 5 minutes until it crashed me to desktop. This never happened before without a very good reason. So, has anyone found a way to counter this problem? Just a temporary fix or something?

Made an account just to say this:

I think at this point it's probably best to try and find a way to bypass the horrendous R* support and try and get a message to Rockstar North themselves. I wouldn't be surprised if the "support team" aren't even relaying these issues back to R* North, they probably have no idea this is even happening. Try getting a story out to some gaming sites like PC Gamer or whatever, once it catches wind and Rockstar hears the bad press maybe they'll do something about it, and even better, clean house and get a competent support team that actually do their jobs.

At least some acknowledgement

Thank you for posting this. It is a very good sign that it is on that list.

I just circled back here to report that for the past number of weeks since I documented the downgrade of drivers on two systems that see this issue frequently, neither have experienced another incident of this nature.

Great. So we just have to wait for Nvidia and R* to fix the problem. Thanks for sharing!.

R* is aware of that problem and told so GTA-Talk.de, which started an initiative. Don´t search any longer. All "solutions" on the net are worthless, posted by ignorants who think they solved the problem.

Not sure what this means?

The "solution" we are discussing here is a work around. We need Rockstar and Nvidia to bang heads on this. Knowing that they are "aware" doesn't really do anything for me. The more places this is being discussed the better, IMO.

Anyways, I came here today to see if anyone has any luck with the NVidia drivers released on Oct 29th. I haven't tried it myself. RDR2 for PC launches today, and the latest NVidia driver is supposed to provide "day one support" RDR2. Now, I am sure RDR2 will run on older drivers, but likley not as optimized or one may run into glitches.

I fear we may have arrived at the point we all feared was coming -- that in order to get stability in GTA 5 requries an older driver, and stability/performance in RDR2 cannot happen with that older driver.

Come on Rockstar..... put some urgency on this so that your custoers that have ALL your products can get the best experience across ALL your products.

So far I'm getting exact this issue with RDR2 too. So must be some engine / nvidia / W10 combination issue

Made an account to pile on this.

Bought the game with steam discounts less than a week ago. My game crashes both in story mode and online, expecially in concitaded moments (chases and crashes, mainly). Ive tried to dabble on heists in online but it usually crashes mid mission (worsening my status to bad sport i guess). ive taken part in a few missions and TDM, and the crashes always happened if there were cars involved. degrading graphic options doesnt make a difference.

Ive kept Procexp64 open on GTAV.EXE and I havent seen any spikes on GPU CPU nor memory usage before the crash. Of course, the crash log is useless as ever.

got a Nvidia EVGA GTX970, DX12, drivers updated as of 04.11.

So it seems RDR2 running on the driver that is needed for GTA 5 (431.86), in RDR2 I was unable to get HDR to be recognized. So already, it is choosing between stability in GTA or getting HDR in RDR2. Really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Rockstar and NVidia have had months to resolve this, and so far nothing.

To be fair, I haven't tried GTA after installing the latest NVidia driver (released 2 days ago). I suppose there is a chance it will work, but since they still list GTA 5 crashing as a known issue, I wouldn't expect it to be any better.

I think i sorta solved it for the moment lowering grass detail and all the surrounding options, but jeez i got a 4 year old pc and this is a 5 year old game cant they get their act together already?

I have 2 friends that play this game.

One has a GTX 1080ti and the other has an AMD Rx Series.

The AMD user does not experience the crash issue, not a single instance or even a sniff of a crash,

The GTX 1080 user does experience the crash, however they have reverted their graphics driver to an older version which has reduced the frequency of the game crashing.

Unfortunately I'm running a GTX 980 …  I did manage to slightly reduce the amount of crashing by reverting to an old Nvidia driver (which didn't make much difference) and disabling my DVD reader.  Since disabling the dvd drive I've crashed once in 2 days ???

If you look in the launcher.log file under \Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V you see an entry for device lost,  something DirectXish / Driverish maybe going on here ??

Okay, why are you guys still using 440 drivers? People have already reported success using 431. Be stubborn because you want the latest driver and enjoy the crashing.

YES! It's a workaround! Unfortunately, no on here works with RS or NV so quit bellyaching or play another game.

Now having the latest drivers makes you a whiny entitled brat. Such is the world we live in.
