GTA 5/Online keeps crashing

Since the Casino DLC, GTA5/Online keeps crashing on PC and I'm back on Desktop. Before that, I could count the crashes since 2015 on one hand. And thats respectable for a growing Open World Game.

It's always the same error in the launcherlog

I've heard many reports from friends and other guys they know them. Their games keeps crashing randomly all the time. Sometimes after some minutes, sometimes after some hours, sometimes even in the Pre-Lobby, sometimes during the game is launching, sometimes not at all.

After a crash after some minutes, I try something and the game is running for hours, but than...Boom, Crash. In any situation, it's randomly.

Oddly enough, there is nothing in the public to read about this issue. Not in the Forum, not even in Twitter. But there are so many players out there with crasing issues and no puplic reports?

Is there anybody with the same issue?

Me and my girlfriend has the same issue. Really annoying and I don't dare to start any sale missions because I'm afraid it will crash during the mission.

Really annoying!

The game is broken. If you were thinking of trying to fix it with the cookie-cutter responses Rockstar Support will inevitably throw at you, don't waste your time. I pretty much covered all the bases as detailed in my Reddit post:

Same here. I started crashing randomly since the casino update. For a week now the game has become unplayable as it crashes every 15 mins.

I'm really waiting for a fix. Still nothing from R*

Never had any game to desktop crashes since I started to play gta 5/online in late 2015. Beginning with casino DLC I do now. Error code is same one than mentioned above(0xc0000005).

Would really appreciate a fix or something as the game is almost not playable atm. The loading and entering-session-times exceed the in game-time to the next crash. That's pretty sad.

The newest Win10 Update (KB4512941 from August 30th) didn't work for me aswell. On the day after the Win10 Update, the game (GTA Online) ran +3,5h without any crashes. But the day after, issues and crashes came back, sometimes after 1h or 15-30min. Even a fresh Win10 installation, didn't avoid the crashes.  (puke) Like always, sometimes after 1h or 15-30min. I'm realy done with that bullsh*t!

GTA Online is playing like in hell, not possible and makes no fun. 15-30min

Single Player (Social Club online) works better, but crashes happen too. +1h

Single Player (Social Club offline) works perfect, with out issues and crashes. +10h

I believe more and more it's something with the online transaction part in this game.

With the new Win10 Updates KB4514359 + KB4515384

I started the game each time with the command lines -verify (Check game installation for problems and repair any issues found. (Disc and non-Steam digital versions only. For Steam versions, you can verify game cache to accomplish the same check.) and  -noChunkedDownload (Forces patches to be downloaded all at once instead of in chunks.)

Single Player (Social Club Off/Online) works fine +4-6h tested the last 3 days

GTA Online works better, but crashes still happen very often. The first 3 hours, exactly 60min after game launching, the game crashed. Fullscreen, Window Mode, Borderless Window Mode. The 4th try took 80min, before I was tired. GN😴

Same here. Crashing every 15mins, especially when playing casino missions.

Submitted a ticket to Rockstar a week ago and they're pretty helpful. So far they don't admit it's a problem with the game though.

EDIT: unfortunately after 1hour it crashed again....

Had the same issue with the latest Nvidia drivers; was crashing every 30-45 mins. Been running the game online for four hours now.

What I did was this: reverted back to 436.15 drivers (just a clean installation on top of the newer ones, didn't bother to remove the old drivers), uninstalled Geforce Experience that forced itself on the system a few versions back, and I'm now running the game in debug mode (from Nvidia Control Panel/Help menu) since these factory OC'd cards have had stability issues.

I'll report back if I experience crashes, but so far so wood knocking.

Edit: Still up with no issues so I guess it's the latest Nvidia driver that is even worse than previous ones.

Edit 2: The game has been running for 14-15h now, no issues.

Yesterday I found out that Windows "updated" my Intel I217 LAN driver at the end of July, to a Microsoft version from 2018.

I installed the latest Intel driver and so far no crash yet.

I too am seeing this, and it is on more than one system and more than one rockstar accounts. There is nothing about either of these systems that should create instability, and neither system has any issues with any app other than GTA5.exe. Also, one of those systems is mine and I never had these CTDs on that system until I resumed playing after the Casino release. Did the game crash once in a blue moon before? Sure. No game is perfect. But it never happened with such frequency as I am seeing now -- which is fine one day then crash 10 minutes into a session the next day..... and do that 3 times after reboots.

What I am leaning towards is that the game and the latest NVidia drivers just don't play well together. I have rolled both these systems back to NVidia's latest "Studio" driver -- which is 431.86. I will report back after enough time has passed to say whether this helps or not. And if it does I will file bugs with both nvidia and rockstar.

Although I cringe at the thought of opening another R* ticket, because when they send me their auto generated email with the link on how to open ports on my firewall, I am certainly going to loose my proverbial sh&*. Also I am sure that email will have a link to their old page that talks about troubleshooting crashes and recommends re-installing directx -- which you can't do on windows 10!

I am not one of those rockstar haters, but have enough experience with their "support" to know it won't be fun -- and won't result in anything real. BY that, I mean they will send the automated email and close the ticket -- because from their perspective it is done. Now that goes into their bean counting and metrics as a "closed" issue, and it was closed within 15 minutes!!! "Wow.... that is world class support! Keep up the great work!" says the mid-level manager whose bonus and continued employ are contingent upon those numbers. Never mind the issue is far from resolved and the entire user base is saying "WTF?"

Just came back to say that so far, both systems have not seen another CTD since rolling the driver back to 431.86. Prior to rolling back the driver, it would have been extremely rare for neither of the systems to CTD. I submitted a bug to NVidia driver feedback. Holding drivers back is not ideal, but hopefully they sort out the issue and fix it, as I won't be holding back the drivers indefinitely.

Still no crashes to desktop (CTD) on either system. Interestingly, the one I play on did experience a huge graphics freeze. It looked exactly like what it used to look like just before the CTD.... except there was no CTD. My instinct is telling me the problem lies squarely in the middle between Rockstar an NVidia. The game is probably feeding malformed requests/data to the video layer for whatever reason (bug n their part) and previous video drivers were handling the situation without crashing the video layer -- and that is no longer the case (regression bug on NVidias part)

I have heard nothing back on the NVidia feedback I gave on this.

I can't install the 431.86 as it's a studio driver, and my 970 GTX doesn't support it.

However, my crashes started on the 2nd of august, after the casino update and after a major Windows 10 update. I had a 3xx.xx driver installed back then, at least a year old. So, at least for me, it isn't an issue with the latest Nvidia drivers only. Maybe some specific combination, or an issue that only happens with the game ready drivers, and not with the studio.

On my notebook which has an AMD GPU (wx 3100) i don't have crashes, so definately some W10/Nvidia/GTA combination issue, but the question remains who is to blame....

Got a new reply from rockstar support last night, to try running the game (GTA5.exe) in Windows 7 or 8 compatibillity mode. With Windows 7 it crashed as usual. With Windows 8 it hasn't yet (played for 1,5hours), but i'm not convinced yet. Also I turned on "Disable fullscreen optimisation", so maybe that makes a difference.

EDIT: crashed again

2 months later this is still going on and not a single word from R* on this.

Thank you :) But I doubt it, because even older driver (which runs the game very well, before the Casino Update), makes the game crashing. But hey, let's try. 🤣

Looks like NVidia released a hotfix yesterday. While it doesn't specifically mention GTA 5 or GTA Online, it was released to fix CTD's in a few other games. Perhaps it also helps with what we are struggling with here?

Just want to clarify. I have four GTA players in the house and for two of us GTA Online is the primary game played. I saw this problem  on 3 out of those 4 rigs after the Casino update. All 4 are windows 10 with NVidia 10 series cards. 2 our of 4 were stabilized after installing the current NVidia Studio driver 431.86. when I say "Stabilized" I mean there are no longer crashes to desktop with the popup to "retry". Both of those rigs have played the game for 20+ hours since the driver was downgraded to 431.86 without CTD. And when I say 2 out of 3 rigs, that 3rd rig just wasn't downgraded to 431.68 as part of the test. It isn't that the downgrade was done and it continues.

Then, the hotfix came into the picture, and so far I have put that latest driver 436.51 on just my rig to see if the problem comes back, and so far it has not and I have played several days, several hours each day, doing the typical things. Before I started any of this and was having the CTD's, over the course of 2 days I'd have seen at least one CTD -- likely I would see 4 to 5.

So I will be putting 436.51 on at least one more rig over the next couple days, assuming I continue to see stability on mine.

And yes, when I downgraded to 431.86 I used DDU in safe mode to completely remove the driver and then reinstalled. But I did not o the same when I installed 436.51.

And yes, before downgrading to 431.86 I tried DDU to remove the latest driver (at that time) and reinstall that same driver and no change to stability.

My game (Online) ran 2,5hrs today until it crashed again. Still on 430.86. I don't know if I should be happy or angry about it. 🙄

Well, the final verdict is that the instability returned after installing the new hotfix driver. So at least for the time being, the NVidia "studio" driver (431.86) is the only driver I have been able to use and achieve stability. :(
