What if GTA IV had a three-protagonist system like GTA V?

This story is dedicated to the recent idea I thought about: How would the story play out if you could play as all three GTA IV characters with the same storylines, missions, etc. In the same game? This idea interested me due to the possibility of each characters storyline eventually intersecting. While the dlc Ballad of Gay Tony radically differs in feel and style from the 2 other games, it's worth mentioning it in here aswell.

In my opinion, the storyline would start out with back and forth missions with Niko and Johnny. In this storyline, there isn't alot of interaction between the characters except for the few missions where they meet up. In this case, you can play as either character and finish that mission in their perspective depending on who you switch to at the last moment. During the Faustin era of the game, Niko and Johnny are the only two characters you get to play as.As the game progresses past the bank mission, you eventually get Luis to play as. Fast forward to the end of the game, you're given a choice by each character. In Johnny's case, you can kill billy grey, or get informed by billy grey of the one who ripped you off throughout all the Diamond Deals: Luis Lopez. In this case, you're given an option to either kill Billy Grey like in canon, or confront Luis. In this sceniro, you find Luis at the club and fight through numerous guards to reach Luis. A classic assassination scene is shown and the game ends.

In the other part, if you play as Luis, you're given an opportunity to kill Bulgarin or Bulgarin offers to spare Gay Tony and Luis if he is to "take care of someone." That individual being Niko Bellic for Dimitri Rascalov. If Luis goes forward with this plan, he confronts Niko at the wedding and gets in a shootout with Jacob and some Rasta goons. After making it through the goons and Dwayne Forge's goons, you chase Niko down in car. Niko then proceeds to ride to Liberty island with Jacob on boat after crashing near the docks. When reaching liberty island, Luis kills Niko. Presumably you can also kill Jacob who is shooting at you, but if you do everyting to avoid his shots, he can be spared. After killing Niko, Gay Tony confronts Luis and the game is over.

In the next timeline for Niko, Niko has three options. He can choose to seek out revenge on Dimitri, do the deal, or do a ending where all characters unite against their enemies. I'm not sure exactly how they'd meet and make amends, but it would be interesting to see it happen. After Niko, Johnny, and Luis arm up, they fight through the Rascalov and Bulgarian Mafia killing DImitri and Bulgarin at the same time, Niko, Johnny, and Luis storm the prison and kill billy grey. This leads to an overall richer ending, as all three characters are playable and they all exchange money and bas a result, become millionaries. Luis and Tony get out of debt, Johnny seeks his revenge, and Niko doesn't lose kate or roman. Plus, he is also rich and Roman buys a new condo in Algonquin.

I think in the case of IV having the three stories and protagonists completely separate was the beauty of it. There was just something very awesome about how it was three almost separate stories going on in this city with three separate protagonists who only came into contact with each other quite briefly (and with a feeling that any number of additional stories could be told about others living there). The way the stories intertwined and gradually had more revealed about them with each game was cool, each one adding more depth to the others. Things like playing the same mission from three different points of view one at a time, getting to see a character you previously played as more as a bad guy/enemy at certain points, or driving past a previous protagonist like they're just some random dude in the street in a cutscene, it was all done in interesting and surprising ways. It's also cool how it's three clearly defined different views of the same city right down to different graphics filters, different music and certain different interiors to fit the tone of each, I wouldn't want that to all just be the same.

I'm sure it also could've been cool switching between them, just in different ways. But for me there's so many cool and charming things about the games/story/characters that are able to be there specifically because they are separate and I wouldn't want to lose them. Maybe it would be cool if it was somehow possible to switch between them after the three games are completed (like, just for convenience in freeroam) but I definitely prefer that the storylines are played separately and that the three protagonists are only subtly linked.

I'm glad that it didn't. I prefer the way it was implemented in the IV universe, in a form of separate story releases, each with a specific content that fits the protagonist's background and personality.

Was just thinking about it today, but I don't think it'd work, most of the missions don't really take place at the same time from the beginning to the end and there would be no manual switch, it would have been just like in The Warriors where the game automatically switches to the character you had to play with, so I dunno...

What I'd have liked though would be a faster way to switch between games in the GTAIV & Episodes from Liberty City complete edition 'cause to switch from TLAD to TBOGT it makes you load the whole game, while for GTAIV you have to exit to the PS3 XML menu and it takes ages. Would have been better to just pause > "Game" > game select > play, but it's most likely due to tech not being that fast back then

It wouldn't work. I've always described GTA V as like being a single story with multiple protagonists, but GTA IV/EFLC is multiple stories with multiple protagonists. Let me explain. In GTA V the story is still structured the same way as it would be if there was only one protagonist.

It doesn't have any missions taking place at the same time as GTA IV/EFLC so from a design standpoint the switching is feasible. However with GTA IV/EFLC many missions either take place directly just before or at the same time so switching would be a nightmare. One of my goals on my GTA bucket list is to play through GTA IV/EFLC chronologically, but given the shear scope of the missions and I would be changing discs all the time it's something I've yet to wrap my brain around.

Plus I think the way it's done maintains consistency with each game's theme and tone. Constantly jumping back and forth between Niko, Johnny and Luis would give me a headache.

No no, it was a cool idea back then in V but IV had it's own magic. See, we all know V is a sh*t, f*cking, game. Everyone tries to exuse R* for the mess they've done, IV was so good that it didn't had the need for mods, 3 protagonist system? Forget it.

The key here is to play through the games in big mission chunks, until you hit crossovers. E.g. Do 5 TLAD missions, 5 TBOGT missions, and then say 10 IV missions or whatever. MoneyOverBullsh*t's Possible Trinity thread gives quite a good insight as to the best way to play the trilogy chronologically.

I belive that it was good that GTA IV had one protagonist and later did EFCL because if not Niko and the other prtoagonists story would be like GTA V:3 friends doing something with 69 missions and weak ending, and zero personality.

I want in a remastered GTA IV Niko,Johnny and Luis being 3 characters with their missions because it feel like 3 different stories, characters with personality and the real protagonist is Liberty City.

I would do a remaster combing all 3 stories in one game,so Niko would be the first protagonist,Johnny the second(after Crime and Punishment I think) and Luis after Three Leaf Clover, but the only problem is the missions executions since ''some missions happen at the same time with different characters and would be confusing to make the switch mechanic'' and the same thing with missions like Blow your Cover-Buyer's Market,...

But if possible it would add more missions to Johnny and Luis and more characters and mechanics,so in total would be around 200 missions.

Maybe I would make more interiors and a more developed Alderney with a north-western part which would be just trees and grass.

Buyable safehouses would be added and some beta weapons,dialogue,...

It would be great to have those in a remaster(0% chance to happen),but it is good that Rockstar made GTA IV with ONE protagonist.

I don't think that system really fits IV since the 3 protagonists aren't "that" related.
