GTA V Crashes with error code 0xc0000005!! HELP!

Question

Posted (edited)

Guys, i'm so desperate! Let's start from the begining:

I used a VPN to be able to get chips in order to buy the casino store itens, since i'm one from those banned countries. But guess what?! Now everyone apparently can purchase them! I got into trouble for nothing! So...i used ProtonVPN. I had a trial premium version for a couple of days, after that the VPN would automatically go for the standard free version. Seems like only toke 1 or 2 days of using the free standard version for my game get f*cked up! Here is what happened:

I launched the game using the VPN, while in the main menu of the game, during the loading time to join GTA Online, the game crashed like 20 seconds after being in the loading. Then i turned off the VPN but the problem persisted. Sometimes i was able to get in the Single Player for 3 seconds or so before crash. The crash would lead the game to automatically exit and then i would receive a Social Club notification saying that "GTA closed unexpectadly, blablabla", not saying the exactly reason why. Then, i did all the imaginable, i uninstalled the VPN, i checked my drivers to see if they were up to date, i installed the most recent Windows software version, and i was now able to play for 10 minutes (oddly enough, lol), but i would crashed again in the end. Then, i searched for solutions in the internet, i got one solution that was to go to the Documents folder of the game, go to Profiles, open folder "DC(and some numbers there)" and delete the files "cfg.dat" and "pc_settings_bin", but none of that worked, i would crash after those 10-ish minutes of game. I even let one friend and one cousin of mine that i trusted, to play the game with my account, and seems like they did it with no problem (one just made the login to see if my account was ok, the other played like 30 minutes and didn't noticed any problem).

After that i saw the only solution was to format the pc! I did that yesterday, my hard drive was completely cleaned up, my pc was "new like a baby" again. But the problem wasn't solved that  well, bcz i usually would crash at the first try of login into online, but at the 2nd attempt i would stay in the game for like 2 hours which was the time record (and then i crashed again!).

Today, for coincidence or not, seems like the servers were down for a little bit and when i tried to play the game i got the same problem of before...10-ish minutes of being able to play the game, then the crash.

[UPDATE IN THE SITUATION]: Today i tried to play GTA without internet, so i could just go to the Single Player! But i stay there for 3 hours without a problem! Then, i turned again the internet connection and the crashes after 5-10 minutes came too.

Here is what was the report of the launcher log:

P.S.: PLZ SOMEONE HELP ME! IN THE ULTIMATE OPTION I NEED TO CONTACT ROCKSTAR, BUT...i'm affraid that i will be banned for used a VPN (which i most need to tell them in order to get help...or a ban...).

Same here...From the GTA Online Help&Support Board

Since the Casino DLC, GTA5/Online keeps crashing on PC and I'm back on Desktop. Before that, I could count the crashes since 2015 on one hand. And thats respectable for a growing Open World Game.

It's always the same error in the launcherlog

I've heard many reports from friends and other guys they know them. Their games keeps crashing randomly all the time. Sometimes after some minutes, sometimes after some hours, sometimes even in the Pre-Lobby, sometimes during the game is launching, sometimes not at all.

After a crash after some minutes, I try something and the game is running for hours, but than...Boom, Crash. In any situation, it's randomly.

Oddly enough, there is nothing in the public to read about this issue. Not in the Forum, not even in Twitter. But there are so many players out there with crasing issues and no puplic reports?

Is there anybody with the same issue?

Same problem here on my main PC with Intel cpu and nvidia 970 gpu.

On HP notebook with Intel cpu and amd cpu no issues. I do play with lower settings ofc, but untill the casino update they both worked fine.

Exatly the same problem here, opened ticket at Rockstar.  Did all the things they asked me to do.  Even cleaned up my whole PC, all fans, new heat compound etc on my CPU.

Windows 10 PC with GTX980.  Even clean boot did not change anything.

CPU and Memory benchmarks all OK without any problem, graphics card "Furmark" benchmark OK without any problem.

Stable internet connection 100 Mbit via vodafone fiber cable.

First thought it was some heat-problem, but after "out-dusting" my CPU, GPU and whole case the problem still exists.

Tried several NVDIA drivers until down to 436.15 - problem still exists.

Strange thing is that a lot of people report exactly the same offset 396bc55 in GTA5.exe as the point where the error occurs.

Problem occurs randomly, sometimes after 2 minutes, sometimes after 3 hours.  Very frustrating and no more fun to play.

Having the same issue as the others. Event viewer says Exception code: 0xc0000005 and Fault offset: 0x000000000396bc55.

I don't think it matters whether the game or social club is crashing...it's still GTA V.

I tried ALL assumed solutions as well, game still crashed with exactly the same symptoms.

Please open tickets!   Rockstar support will bomb you with requests and possible solutions and other useless, but please do not give up!  That's the only way we ever get a solution.

Anyone using Nvidia hardware and running driver version 436.30 needs to downgrade drivers if they experience this issue.

436.30 completely ruined the game for me, crashing every session, sometimes after 2 minutes, sometimes after 30, no way to tell what was causing them as it was completely random. It was so bad that it got me thinking that my RAM or video card were going defective. I verified the game files on Steam, tested the memory for errors - everything came out just fine, as expected.

Then I started suspecting the video driver or the latest windows 10 update ( build 18362.356) for this problem. I uninstalled the 436.30 drivers and went back to 431.86 (which is labeled studio driver but really doesnt matter) because the 431.xx branch is the last fully stable one. 436.15 would probably work too bc I don't remember GTA crashing that much with those, and maybe some people need the 436.xx features like the sharpen filter, integer scaling or ultra low-latency mode.

Anyway, with 431.86 my game is back to normal - other than due to cheaters, no more crashes.

Mr Blue Playdoh

I don’t agree with the above! So you telling me a massive amount of players all of a sudden is getting this error out the blue after playing the game for years? Ok must be our computer.

I'll join the club. Verified the game cache, re-installed, all overlays removed, 3rd party programmes disabled, DDU to remove the driver for a clean install etc. Temperatures are fine, too (68° C GPU and 60° CPU). The Witcher 3 and Elex, both equally demanding games, run without any issues.

Always the same: After around 5 - 20 minutes the game crashes without warning. It simply stops, renders yet another single frame, then closes. Sometimes though I can play for even more than two hours, fooling me into believing I found a solution. Next day - BAM!

The game ran four years on the same system, except for a new SSD and a clean install of windows 10 (was windows 10 before) recently. Game ran fine (SSD and W10 are doing agreat job improving frame time and getting rid of micro stuttering) - until the casino update.

Support ticket issued (Oh gods please have mercy :colgate:), the more the better to get R* attention.

After my last post, I tried the same. First just pulling the network cable, after some more testing just starting the game in offline mode via starting parameter, this way the internet connection can stay online.

In offline mode social club stays offline as well. I let the game run over night (twice), while at work, and in between I just played the campaign. No crashes. Not a single one in almost 30 hours.

Starting again without offline starting parameter or setting SC to online while ingame, the game will crash soon afterwards - reliably.

So there seems to be a connection between social club communicating online and these crashes, at least for me and the OP. Given the situation that these crashes started with the casino update for a lot of people and none of the known remedys for 0x00..5 crashes is working, I wouldn't be suprised if this (read: social club) is the culprit. Can someone test and verify this? Might be a help then for R* if this could be added to the support tickets and mentioned in their support forum.

The newest Win10 Update (KB4512941 from August 30th) didn't work for me aswell. On the day after the Win10 Update, the game (GTA Online) ran +3,5h without any crashes. But the day after, issues and crashes came back, sometimes after 1h or 15-30min. Even a fresh Win10 installation, didn't avoid the crashes.  (puke) Like always, sometimes after 1h or 15-30min. I'm realy done with that bullsh*t!

GTA Online is playing like in hell, not possible and makes no fun. 15-30min

Single Player (Social Club online) works better, but crashes happen too. +1h

Single Player (Social Club offline) works perfect, with out issues and crashes. +10h

I believe more and more it's something with the online transaction part in this game.

Tried downgrading the nvidia drivers down to version 4.16.34 - same problem with all drivers, so i think it really deals with the casino update - that fits with my observations, end of july where things were starting to go wrong.

Guys, if we want a solution for this issue, we should all open tickets for this - which i just did (again).

Rockstar support answered quickly, they need the following files:

- saved output from the dxdiag command

- saved output of msinfo32 command

- the launcher log file residing in Documents\Rockstar Games\GTAV

and an error description, i supplied a picture of the windows 10 event log

all preferably in english language.

So please open tickets!

One more update:  Rockstar support advised me to execute the windows SFC commands to verify (and eventually) repair windows system files, then (again) verify the game's local files, then (again) run the game and see what happens.

Guess what??   Problem still there - as expected.

Here my last answer in my support ticket:

-----

Hello, This case is really getting weird now...you completely ignore the fact that a lot of other users have exactly the same problem - with other hardware and other software constellations.

Nevertheless: i (AGAIN) ran the SFC command (like almost every day during the last week) and it (AGAIN) found NO PROBLEM.

I verified the game's files ONCE AGAIN, like i did yesterday, the day before yesterday and so on.

There are no integrity problems within the game's files.

And: before you ask me to completely re-install the whole game - i did that last week - the problem reoccurred.

And: YES, i also used the windows DISM commands to check my system - my windows is CLEAN.

And: NO, i am not going to re-install my windows.

I think it's about time to stop keeping customers busy with useless advices. I also think you have enough information to wake up your programmers to fix the problem, many customers will be more than happy and will eventually invest more money in Rockstar games in future. Currently, i won't.

So, the problem is still alive and i am waiting for some more advice or, even better, a fix for this annoying problem.

A LOT of other customers with the SAME problem do the same.

Thank you.

-----

OPEN TICKETS, guys!

Like always, sometimes after 1h or 15-30min.

Maybe social club is causing the error and not the game itself, even though the faulting module is listed as the game. At some point my game was crashing every 20 minutes, and after deleting local profile in the social club overlay and restarting the game, it ran fine for the rest of the day (until I restarted my PC). Now I just delete local profile every time I start the game, and I have a lot less crashes.

edit: And yes, I tried about every fix people suggest for error 0xc0000005, even wiped my whole PC and downloaded the latest Windows build from Microsoft, installed nVidia driver 399.24, and the game still managed to crash. No other game does this to me.

Some people claimed that booting windows in legacy mode fixed the crash for them. The cause of the crash is social club/tunables/anti cheat related, since if you put the social club in offline mode, the game will never crash in single player.

Edit: forget what I said regarding legacy mode, it doesn't work either

Rockstar now asked me to play GTA5 in story mode and check whether the problem also occurs there.

I did so, went into story mode, played for about 20 minutes, put the game in pause mode to have a drink, when i returned the game had crashed with exactly the same error according to windows eventlog.   Tried again, same crash after 10 minutes storymode play.

Did someone observe that as well?

yes, if you are experiencing crashes during online, the game will eventually crash during sp as well. The problem seems to be Social Club related, since putting the social club in offline mode prevents every crash from happening. You should try that as well

And if you should get SP to work in Offline Mode, report this as well. I still follow every useless suggestion made by support even knowing that it won't help, just to stress with every answer that I'm now almost 30 hours into story mode with not a single crash in offline mode.

It's just typical R* logic that in order to activate offline mode, the game must be activated online first - every f*****g single time I'm in a fresh windows session. So activating it once via steam and SC isn't enough? Thanks, LOLstar 🖕

With the new Win10 Updates KB4514359 + KB4515384

I started the game each time with the command lines -verify (Check game installation for problems and repair any issues found. (Disc and non-Steam digital versions only. For Steam versions, you can verify game cache to accomplish the same check.) and  -noChunkedDownload (Forces patches to be downloaded all at once instead of in chunks.)

Single Player (Social Club Off/Online) works fine +4-6h tested the last 3 days

GTA Online works better, but crashes still happen very often. The first 3 hours, exactly 60min after game launching, the game crashed. Fullscreen, Window Mode, Borderless Window Mode. The 4th try took 80min, before I was tired. GN😴

Regarding transactions, I found something strange today while playing sp with social club off, not sure if it's related. Anyways when you go up and buy some soda from the drink machines, you do get some invalid transactions. Like wtf? I tough that error was only online related

this is another reason why companies should stick their sh*tty DRMs up theirs, this trash only hurts legit paying consumers, do you think pirates have a single problem with the game not allowing them to play offline? this company became so pathethic lol

This also happens in singleplayer if social club is online. Note that it won't charge the dollar as well. Meanwhile my online character can buy soda without any issues - provided she makes it to the machine before the game crashes :p

There's really something wrong with the game since the casino update. I'm just surprised it's not affecting all pc players - it seems it's only windows 10 related.

I noticed the exact same issue and have reported this to Rockstar Support. Here's the link. During their chat they kept on advising me to change my router/internet settings but nothing helped. I opened a ticket eventually and they're planning to investigate the issue but they want a whole video of the issue while a screenshot already clearly shows the problem. I encountered 2 others on the Steam forum having the same issue.

I'm also experiencing these crashes (2 times by now) with the following log: "Exit code 0xc0000005 indicates a game crash (STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION)"

A huge problem is that they're very random, I need to play for quite a while and I'm still not sure whether it will occur or not.

Has anyone disabled Fullscreen Optimizations of the GTA5.exe file? (right-click -> Properties -> Compatibility tab)

This is not an issue with the game itself but with your computer the 0xc0000005 error is a Application Error 0xc0000005 (Access Violation) error is usually caused by your computer not being able to correctly process the files and settings required to run a particular program or installation. ... System File Checker (SFC) is a utility in Windows that scans for corrupted Windows system files

No, you are not fully right. Access violation is showing that you are trying to reach some address that is not belong to you, so you have no rights to access it. That is all that this error is about. It is not "your files corrupt!" or "your hardware is bad!" - it is just "hey, you have no permission to get that!". And so there is many reasons for that.

Yes, access violation can occur due to bad memory or bad disk - but in that case this problem will affect every process including OS. Everything in your system will crash include system itself if you have bad memory or corrupted files. Not just only one application. You windows log will be all red due to applications crashes. But it is not our case here.

Also problem can occur due to software error: for example, easiest way to get access violation error is to read memory you just freed up. This is example of same error fixed by Visual Studio patch:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2635973/fix-0xc0000005-error-when-you-open-a-visual-studio-solution-in-a-local\

And btw, "fix" in your video is just placebo. Or stupid clickbait. You can't fix anything by just removing SoftwareDistribution folder: this folder used only for windows update distribution, nothing more. Same for catroot and catroot2 - it can affect only failed windows update, nothing more.

So dude showing you some useless actions and saying you - hey, I fixed it! And you getting this bullsh*t here saying that this is the fix. But instead you should read, what exactly this dumb dumb did and what the results of hist actions. He just restarted some update services and cleaned windows update folders - do you really thing that can help gta5 stop crashing? :)

Well considering there is only ONE thread on here regarding this issue how was I suppose to know this is a "Massive Issue" I don't unless it's being talked about on here which it isn't

Second off if you google the error it tells you the same error that I mentioned which is why I suggested the fix I did as you can see above

Here are some recent links regarding this crash with the same error code. Some threads are huge (on Steam for example) and are full of people with the same problem.

I have or had the same issue for weeks. Yesterday I found out that Windows "updated" my Intel I217 LAN driver at the end of July, to a Microsoft version from 2018.

I installed the latest Intel driver and so far no crash yet.

EDIT: unfortunately after 1hour it crashed again....

I'm sorry for that, but for me it's the same disaster. Like everyday with GTA Online. Once the game crashes after 15-30minutes any you try the next tip. Now, the game works +30min, 60min and boom. Next tip let the game work maybe for 3hrs, before you quit the game by YOURSELF. And you think for tomorrow: "Hm, maybe the issues are gone!" On the next day, the same settings from the day before, but the game crashes 45min, and the frustation starts from the beginning.

It's realy random. The time, the things you do in game (even no input trigger crashes), the settings (game or OS). I have no idea what to do!
