Toll roads are a tourist trap

Recommended Posts

As most of you guys know already, I live in Québec, the french-speaking province of Canada. I live in a small city which is pretty much the northernmost city of importance in the whole of eastern Canada (there are other small cities/villages north from here but none are larger than my town). To give you an idea, you cannot go from my city to the main population centre while using only highways. You MUST use small countryside roads to reach the rest of Canada, there is no such thing as a continuous highway that connects my city to the rest of the country. In fact, we sometimes get completely cut-off from the outside world during the heaviest snowstorms because sometimes all or almost all roads become closed. All this to explain that for my whole life I had never driven on a road that had more than two lanes on both directions, and I thought that driving on a road was simple regardless of where you are in the world.

In July I drove to Ontario for the first time. This is when I realised how little I knew.

I experienced 6-lanes highways, people constantly cutting me off, and the craziness of exits going all over the place, and thank god I had Google Maps. I once took an exit to be greeted my a crowd of people in some sort of bus stop looking at me super confused. Apparently there are lanes only for buses??? wtfff. One day some idiot crashed into my bumper on some sort of 2-lane (2 per side = 4 lanes total) suburban 4-way intersection. In Québec we are very courteous so of course I get out to ask him if he was okay and offer help but NOPE this dude HITS AND RUNS. I'm like "wtffff why is he going away, he must be some sort of fugitive" so of course I do the normal thing that everyone does, which is chase the fugitive down. I reverse into incoming traffic, turn in the intersection, still on reverse, while being honked at by everybody (had a big Québec flag attached on the passenger window the whole time), continue down the road chasing the hit-and-run guy in reverse, do a J-Turn inside one lane with cars on the left lane and obstacles on the right, and finally catch up to the guy. Turns out he was just some indian dude and that hit-and-run sh*t is "normal" in these big cities. okayyy.

But regardless of all that stuff, the one thing that I didn't know even existed are toll roads. This was a totally alien concept to me. I didn't know until today that these existed. I have to pay to use a road? How f*cking silly is that? I realised that they existed today because I received mail from Ontario, that mail being a bill of 56.56$ for using the 407 Highway. I didn't see any sign in Ontario that said "you will be billed for using this road". That is a f*cking tourist trap. f*ck toll roads. I was not even aware of the existence of roads that you have to pay to use, how should I have known about this? What are your thoughts?

That's your fault.

Well, I didn't know these even existed, how should I have known? And there were no signs on the road indicating that either.

You can tell your GPS no toll roads.

There's also troll bridges too. You have to cross the the troll's palm with silver and they/zee will let you cross the river.

In my case they didn't. Probably due to the fact that the nearest toll road is almost 100 km away from here. Which is why I didn't know that they existed until yesterday.

Well, now I know why there were 14 seasons of Canada's Worst Driver.

You actually reversed into oncoming traffic to chase this dude down?  Take the plates and call the cops, you literally committed a felony by just doing that...

Next time just call the police, file a report, give them vehicle info (including license plate numbers if you get it), and call your insurance company. Down here in the U.S., there's always a possibility that chasing someone down like that could lead to severe road rage and/or getting shot at.

A couple hundred bucks in damage on a car is easier to fix than a gunshot wound.

I try not to but if I have to go to New Jersey I pay nothing to cross the bridge.  You only pay the toll when entering Philadelphia from New Jersey.  We do that to discourage NJ people from coming over.  :)

It's not the first time I read about someone chasing a "hit-and-runner". Is that like, a normal thing?

A quick google maps search shows signage at all of the onramps I looked at.

I do hate toll roads. I don't think they're tourist traps though.

Yes, but I am not a native english speaker, the word "toll" was not in my vocabulary. I simply disregarded those signs.

Speaking of... How is that movie not on bluray yet??...

So let me get this straight: you got charged for using a clearly signposted toll road and it's someone else's fault that you didn't understand what "toll" or the signs meant?
