When you can't adjust your camera follow distance (or whatever it's called) in a game. I've always liked how in GTA and RDR you can adjust your view so that it's first person or a few varieties of distances away from the back of your character by just clicking a button a few times. I've been playing a game called Warframe lately and I like it a lot but there is no adjustment like that. The only thing you can change is whether your character is on the left or the right and your camera distance between you and them is set in stone. Bugs me. Especially when I'm playing a larger character because then when I'm aiming a gun, they obstruct half of the damn screen.

Hats off to whoever at R* figured out that players ideally need 'close', 'medium' and 'far' settings for third-person camera - and a cookie for whoever decided, on top of that, that players should be able to pick on-foot and vehicle camera settings independently of one another! :rah:

For some reason, I've always preferred max/'far' cam for vehicles in GTA, but the in-between 'medium' one for on-foot - and it's cool that, even now, GTAO remembers that, and so I can get in and out of cars in third-person, and it swaps between seamlessly without fail. Well, mostly without fail - it's been years since an update added a bug whereby exiting certain activities sets your on-foot camera distance to match your vehicle camera distance, but I just need to hit the button three times, and everything's back as it should be.

i hate when developers have a fetish for killing off a protagonist from a previous game for no good reason. 🙃

Been playing Gears 5 in co-op recently and having to constantly open a bunch of doors with your partner that block you off from where you were previously gets pretty annoying. I believe they're there to hide loading screens between areas, but I'm not sure why they're so frequent. Open-world games don't seem to have a problem just having the player move around in huge areas without interruptions like this.

And I thought Johnny K's and Shepard's death couldn't be topped.

At least they got karma with all the bad reviews, paying for all that 10/10 can only get you so far 🤣

...ooh, new one that's popped up several times in the last few days, and I hate it:

Youtubers and "influencers" doing characters/cameos in games. :turn:

Lego DC Super-Villains has a character (previously voiced by the great Dee Bradley Baker) played by Greg Miller. Jesse Cox and others have their own sidequests and appearances in Cyberpunk 2077. "Ninja" (ffs... :rol:) and some others are in the 'GTAO movie in all but name' film "Free Guy".

It's bad enough when film/TV stars get booked for things like that, and take jobs from full-time voice actors (and aren't as good at voice acting as full-time voice actors, either - it's a different discipline, and folks who can do both, like Mark Hamill, are relatively rare exceptions) - but these guys are just getting booked because they're social media celebs, regardless of whether or not they can act at all.

Combine that with the fact that they're not expected to blend in (because the whole point is so that you notice "hey - it's that Influencer™ you like!"), and it's basically the human equivalent of obnoxious product placement. :barf:

AI that has unlimited ammo, why on earth is this still even an issue in a majority of games?

Allies who pretend to shoot but do no damage to rival AI's, their only shooting to make themselves look remotely even useful.

Games with cutscenes that are unable to be skipped.

Game DLC that is overpriced

Minor nitpick at developers but focusing on quantity over quality, I have a digital game on the PS4 where it just gets stuck at the intro logo and it has been reported by others for a long time now and still hasn't been fixed, what is the point of introducing new content if players can't even get beyond the loading screen?

I try to watch credits when I can - some of these people put years of their lives into that project, the least I can do is glance at their name on a wall of text - but c'mon, nearly an hour of credits? I skip that and watch it on YouTube when I want to.

I think that if there's a settlement creation or capture feature, once they're yours there should be no enemy attacks on that settlement. All it does is interrupt gameplay, like in San Andreas of Fallout 4, you could be exploring the map at your leisure when all of a sudden, a settlement is under attack, or the Ballas are attacking your turf. It's especially annoying is SA as it flashes red in the map menu.

All it does is force you to stop what you're doing to deal with this petty BS. Maybe a compromise could be that there's a chance for enemies to attack while you're there, that wouldn't be so bad, but even then it's a balancing act, and a hard one at that so I'd prefer if they just left it alone.

As a completionist of every game I play, Missable or Skippable missions/sidequests/collectibles just irks me the most.

Any developers that do these are assholes, especially when the playtime for the game lasts over tens of hours. If I completed the whole story and the remaining side quests, only to find out that my chance of earning a 100% completion for the game is ruined, I would probably get a stroke trying to redo every single thing.

Please don't ask why can't I just forget about it and move on, it's part of my OCD and my perfectionistic ego.

Mute main character. It's not GTA III era anymore, technology is much more advanced today. It makes your presence to be a witness of a story, rather than a character that make the story.

"Overcrowded" UI, especially from Ubisoft games.

When npc's or peds are overly talkative, some chatter or comments directed at your character can be good for immersion, too much is annoying, I was playing Fallout 4 and went into a bar, about 4 different comments to my character, one telling you to leave them alone, when I was just passing by a fair distance away. Dishournable mention to the "f*ck me in the ass" and "midget f*ckers 22" guys from Gta V

A lot of people would say it’s a way of injecting your own “personality” into them, but I disagree.

For some games such as Doom a mute character isn’t that much of a problem since Doom games have next to nothing of semblance of a story, but for others it’s a bigger deal IMO.

For GTA III it was understandable since it was the first 3D GTA and it kind of fitted with the game’s theme and tone, but nowadays I expect much more. It’s why I don’t like most RPGs that force me to create my own character because usually they’re mute or if they do have voice acting it’s usually the most generic, bare minimum effort.

At the end of the day I want to experience a character’s fleshed out personality, what he/she likes/dislikes etc. It’s  impossible to do that with a mute character because it feels like it wants you to pretend what they must be thinking.

I used to do that when I was about 5 years old when I had action figures I used to play with.

Probably why I prefer linear games that avoid this. I really dislike replaying areas or revisiting things I've already seen before.

They just get in the way. I refuse to play Resident Evil 4 again because as awesome as that game is, I don't want to deal with "LEON! HELP!!"

So you don't like any resident evil game?

Y'know...

Installing games on my console.

I remember when you could just buy a game, pop it into your console and play it. I own way more games than I play and its because they take like 45 minutes to install, so if I want to play, oh say, Skyrim, I cant just sit down and play it, I have to wait like an hour

I dunno, I dont like installing games, I didnt like the concept when it first became a thing either

For sake of convenience it’s a bit of a pain, but then again I remember some games on PS4 that installed in no time sometimes instantly.

I also remember on 360 when it was possible to play games off disc or install them, but I usually favoured installing them as they generally ran better off the hard drive.

I do miss the days when we could just throw a game in and play straight away, but truthfully most games don’t take that long to install or at least in my experience. However I’m not a fan of unnecessarily large updates that are sometimes bigger than the game itself.

I refuse to put any of the new COD games on my PS5 for that reason.

Reward systems that are purely based on RNG

Untradeable Items in multiplayer RPG games

Forced hunger and thirst mechanics

Horrible extreme political correctness

Bad driving physics/handling or bad controls overall if moving with a char

Repetetiveness

Subscriptions to get QoL that should be in games for free

Microtransactions for P2W

Too many DLC's that cost money (example all "The Sims" games) i would never under any circumstances pay a cent for games like this

Unbalanced Weapons/Skills/Vehicles whatever mechanics that only really let you play in one way to achieve the best possible thing to do

Game worlds where everything looks the same

No custom radio station if there is a ingame radio

Annoying UI and hud sounds where everything makes a click or other noise and you can't turn it off

When you near the end of the game and every enemy become bullet sponges. Dijinn from Uncharted 3 and Doomsday Heist final come to mind.

Unlimited enemies. It’s just laziness.

When you enter an area with enemies unaware of your presence  yet you’ve just made a ton of noise equal to a Metallica concert in the previous room.

Having to follow an NPC who walks at the same speed as Flash from Zootopia. Even worse is if you quickly go to the destination and turn around, they’re further back waiting for you to walk next to them.

Cutscenes that can’t be skipped. The Arkham series were the absolute worst at this. Every time you died, you’d have to watch a five second scene of that person mocking you. Every. Single. Time. Not just in one game but across all four.

Excessive collectibles.

Day one patches.

i hate when games are excessively marketed and overhyped, and gamers start drinking the koolaid, only for the game to inevitably become disappointing

anthem, alien, mass effect 3, no man's sky, mass effect andromeda (again?!), watch dogs, GTA V, and now cyberpunk 2077.

when will you people learn.

To be fair hasn't No Man's Sky managed to turn it around though? I know this game was shredded on release, but seems to be looked upon more highly now as the developers worked and improved it over time.

Anyway I'd probably throw in Marvel's: Avengers on your list too. Fallout 76 also.

  • Massive updates that don't actually fix anything of note or add anything new
  • Bugged trophies. I try my best to go for platinum, but sh*t like this makes me feel like I've wasted my time
  • Microtransactions. Must I go on?

Developing the game for 7 years, delaying it multiple times and releasing it just as broken as an alpha or beta. This annoys me.

Multiplayer trophies/achievements can be a big pet peeve of mine, depending on the type of game. I am totally fine with their inclusion in competitive titles (shooters/fighting games/etc.), as multiplayer is the meat of those games anyway.  On the other hand, they have no business in games that are single player focused. You're basically SOL if a game's servers are taken down before being able to earn said trophies (i.e. Shadow of Mordor or the original PS3 releases of The Last of Us and the Uncharted games).

I’m not much of a achievement/trophy hunter, but multiplayer ones are pointless in games where they’re impossible to obtain in older ones.

Speaking of achievements and trophies I really dislike the ones that are either way too easy or so hard it makes me wonder how anyone puts in the time to try and get them. I rarely go out of way to get them, but sometimes when I scroll through the lists I roll my eyes at some of the requirements.

game devs focusing on story more than gameplay

So that when a game has a compelling and well-written storyline, the gameplay tends to be unrewarding, shallow, restrictive and repetitive
