Alternate way of speaking (how to?)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, is there a name for this alternate way of talking in english or does anyone know how to talk like this?

It usually happens when you first meet a new stranger and they talk in a way where they don't use nouns to reveal names, places, products, etc but use enough words to let you know what they're talking about.

It also happens when you're with a group of people and want to let a friend know something about another without them knowing what you're really saying.

Is there a name for this way of talking or books that teach you this?

I might be wrong, but those are two completely different examples with completely different methods. For the first one, it just sounds like somebody being needlessly vague to sound mysterious. I don't know of anybody doing that unless they're trying to hint at something. For the second one, that just comes from being close with somebody to a point where they can read between your lines. I don't know of any books specifically but I suppose there's little stopping you from setting up a code.

If you're interested, look up books about body language. A lot of it seems like pseudoscience but there's some good stuff out there, none of this "if they look right it means they're lying" horseradish.

People talk like this usually to not reveal much about what they were doing at such and such location. It's like mind tricks?

For example. If I asked someone what were they doing in that room and they don't want to reveal exactly what they were doing inside of there they will reply with a mumbo jumbo sentence to implant a HINT of what they were doing ( be it nasty, etc) but they wouldn't tell you word for word.

Or another one is when there's a drug deal going on and the dealer wants to conceal his intentions and protect himself of what he does in case the buyer is an undercover cop he'd talk in this mumbo jumbo manner way.

edit: i don't know why it's showing up as quoted

It's just the art of being able to cover your words. Again, I don't know of any books that could teach you how to do it because it's all circumstantial and regional. It depends entirely on what you're doing, and where you're doing it. You've given two very specific examples, and it would depend entirely on how large your vocabulary is, how quick witted you are, how confident you are and all kinds of other variables.

Me, between trust and privacy.
