The many flaws and missed opportunities of GTA 5

Ok, i'm perhaps 5 years in late about this topic, but i feel that is correct to share my thoughts about this game so that, maybe in the next installment of the series we will have a better game experience, and also to make someone realize the problems of this game.

First of all the map is utterly flawed and a lot of space is wasted. One third of the game area is occupied by these gigantic mountain ranges that serve no purpose at all. Mount Josiah is the worst, it has no roads, no landmarks, no settlement, nothing, it's just a gigantic hill, if you look at the map and watch the enormous blank space over Zancudo you can really imagine a good town located there. Mount Chiliad is too big, if it was smaller there would have been more space for more forest, more desert, or even an airstrip.

Also regarding the map: sore highway system, it may sound stupid but one of the main problems regarding GTA 5 map is how poorly done are the Highways and roads in general. if you look back at San Andreas and GTA 4, you can see how much more developed freeways were, in San Andreas you had to plan your route accordingly to not get lost, road trips felt much more enjoyable because of the many intersections and locations freeway leaded. GTA 4 freeways were much more detailed: Freeway had tolls, intersections, overpasses even underground tunnels. In GTA 5 the highway system is just one freeway that surround the whole map, it doesn't have any infrastructure and traveling on it feels boring since you already know were it takes. There was certainly room for more freeways, sacrificing

some pointless landmark to have Mulholland intersection have have at least one more freeway at the center of the map.

Last point about Map issues, there are only TWO usable airports. The map is so vast and big and traveling in planes is so enjoyable, but you can't land anywhere in not at L.S or in the desert, i mean WTF? GTA SA had 4 airports! Also Fort Zancudo is completely useless, it should have been a joint use airport like in the beta version, if they really want an airbase, why not using The Aircraft carrier form GTA Online?

Now about story, i believe that's more of a personal opinion if it was better than GTA 4's eccetera, but is undeniable the absence of character evolution regarding Franklin and Trevor, their personality never changes considerably during the game. Indeed Micheal is the only character that has a bit of an evolution and that has a more developed personality.

Another flaw about Storytelling is the lack of a menacing villain that gives a threat the protagonist, previous GTA villains were written much better, had a rememberable personality and the protagonist had a reason to take them out.

After all this i want to rapidly cover other flaws about gameplay.

  1.  Lack of useful interiors: the game so much shallow in map design and rooming around is has no purpose if not to rooming around, why should you go to Paleto Bay if you can find the same interiors in L.S?
  2. Lack of Fast Foods and opportunities to do shootouts inside them, same thing about the enterable hospital.Too many unused interiors: a lot of them are enterable just during a mission, i don't find any issue in exploring them even while rooming around, it gives more things to explore to the player, and a sense togo somewhere.
  3. Lack of Safehouses: Rooming around you see so many cool mansions, bungalows or even cool apartments locations that would be amusing to buy and live in. Funny thing is that during story mode lot's of them could have been safehouses, like Trevor living in the O'Neil ranch, Franklin still living in Central LA eccetera, but for some reason the developers cutted the features of buying houses and didn't allowed you to live in more than one house.
  4. Sore wanted system, first star doesn't even exist since cops shoot you on sight as soon as you run from them, hurting a cop results in 3 stars, and fifth star is the same as the fourth one, nothing changes.
  5.  AI stupid and flawed. Pedastrians are programmed to over-react to whatever the player does. Example: sounding the horn makes people run away screaming. Cops shoot at you because of standing in front of them, even GTA 4 had a better input output reaction...
  6.  Cops and NOOSE are stupid and don't have any kind of tactic: they manage kill the player just cause their respawn time is too fast. They stand still in the middle of gunfights, they enter in buildings one by one, they scatter during shootouts and never try to flank the player. Even GTA 4 cops showed more intelligence. Games like Uncharted 2 had far better AI in terms of pathfinding, use of cover and understanding of surroundings.
  7. Cops never use any kind of tool, body armor or special weapon. In Payday 2, a game of June 2013, cops used Shields, heavy body armors and Tazers.
  8.  NOOSE are deployed in groups of 3 in FBI SUVs instead of Group of 4 in SWAT vans like in GTA 4: WFT?
  9. There are 3 kinds of cop cars in this game, but only one of them is keen to spawn, again, WTF?
  10.  Euphoria physics engine drastically downgrade compared to GTA 4 or Max Payne 3. Bodies have no weight, enemies fall down behind cover as a soon they have been hit by one bullet.
  11.  Car handling and car deformation dramatically downgraded compared to GTA 4. GTA 4's wasn't the best but at least cars deformation was good and cars were overall fun to drive. In GTA 5 all cars feel the same, have no weight and have unrealistically rigid suspensions.
  12.  Lack of submissions like vigilante, paramedic eccetera, (taxi driver sucks).
  13.  Lack of gyms (same problem of gta 4).

I know it's a long article, but i think i exposed the most valid reasons of why GTA 5 isn't the best GTA game and the series has to change direction, i'm not saying GTA 5 is a bad game (compare it to MAFIA 3 or Watchdogs), but i think that too many people tend to overestimate it, what do you believe about this points?

I've a couple of corrections and linked a gta 5 map done with me with added locations.

We are expected to use this thread for any complaints:

As for your points, I think they have been discussed to death by now and always felt that these kind point only scratch the surface of GTA V's problem.

We need to understand the special point of video gaming in general is the level of freedom it offers to the player. This is what differentiates it from books and movies. Problem with GTA V (and also some modern games) is they keep taking away the control from the players. You get a huge detailed map but you aren't allowed to enter buildings, it shows how little interactive the world is around us. Trevor kills Johnny in a cutscene, you just have to accept that, you don't get to have a say in that at all. Previous GTA games most of the time involved the players in what is happening but GTA V was very much, you just forced to sit in a locked cart, enjoy the view but you aren't allowed to leave the ride. Just swallow whatever Rockstar puts in your mouth.

Secondly the game has one of the worst reward system I ever seen. You do ton of missions and for what? What rewards you get for Towing Tonya's sh*t? What do hangouts or even getting a 100% competition give you? Some heists don't even pay you anything and others pay you too little. And even if you rely on heists for cash, you still need to manipulate the stock market to get all of the stuff available in the game.

They also take away power fantasy from you as well, I wanted to kill the Tennis Coach, Martin Madrazo or do heists on my own terms rather than being an FBI's bitch but noooo, that's too much Rockstar says, flying a crop duster into a military plane is more believable....yea right.

As for your point on story, yea it seems like the game is written by different people that it keeps changing and involving random things happening without any fixed themes. GTA III was about revenge, VC was about taking over a city as a crime boss and becoming your own boss, SA was about CJ growing up and understanding that family is important, IV was about accepting that your actions have consequences and you have to face them rather than running away, L&TD was about Johnny's last ride as he finally moves on from everything, TBOGT was about not letting luxury take you away from those you care about.

But GTA V doesn't really have a theme, it has no real direction and why most of its characters don't evolve. This is why it has weird features like being able to ride stuff in the Pier yet you can't buy food off vendors.

Furthermore, there is a lot of gameplay issues with GTA V yet it sucks because Online doesn't share these problems. So the excuse that Rockstar can't make a good game anymore doesn't work, they could and they did. For some reason the developers of GTA V wanted to have it all, for GTA V to go every direction and be the game that has everything but it seems they overestimated the limits of current gen consoles and we ended up having a half-eaten GTA game. A game that has identity crisis that can't decide what it wanna be.

Thanks, as a novice i am i didn't know about the complaining thread, do you suggest to delete this post and post it there, or to keep it here?

BTW i agree with you about the lack of free will in the story and mission approach. In fact there are two types of games that differ substantially in game design. Sandbox ones and Story-guided ones. examples: Minecraft and Metal Gear 5 vs Max Payne 3 and The Last of Us. Being an open world GTA 5 should be some sort of hybrid, use the story to force the player into action, letting him using all his imagination and freedom over the open world to make him achieve his goals as he pleases. GTA 5 is complete incoherence about this, the world is enormous and vivid but not interactive at all. You are forced to play the mission as the developer liked, and you can't never take the initiative. For instance in the mission Minor Turbolence, my fav mission of the game (since is a ripoff of Uncharted 3 plane scene), Trevor takes control of the plane just for being intercepted by USAF, there you have no control at all, the plane will crash no matter what, you can't surrender or land anywhere, you simply fly until the dialogue stops and you can move in the next sequence. this pattern repeats itself in almost every mission!

Also i don't think is useless to complain about this topics, complaining isn't a bad thing if used to improve the vision of the product or hypothetically improve it. The purpose of this post was to deconstruct every problem of this game in just one shot. Also i wanted to share solutions about problems in GTA 5 map, like having a city in place of Mount Josiah, a freeway in the middle, the aircraft carrier eccetera.

Let's keep it until mods decides to close it. Threads like these are the prolly only things that get any action around this section of the forum. But I would suggest you post in the Official complaint thread so it may be bumped to the front page, might keep us occupied for a week hopefully instead of another thread like this popping up.

Oh I agree, GTA V's flaws should be highlighted as much as its strong points. This game had the potential of being the greatest GTA game ever made but it sure falls very short in the main areas. However, people here have been complaining a lot about GTA V, I think we once had 3 complaints thread in a single week once. Even the biggest critics of V around here are starting to get tired of these threads. Personally I enjoy these discussion.

Now if only the mods could make official complaints thread sticky, we might get less repetition of these kind of threads.

So you're suggesting to post this topic on the official complain thread, but also to keep it here waiting to be removed? Also, who is "mods"?

I'm suggesting to post more points over at the official complaint threads. Better to promote that thread. But I wouldn't suggesting copy/pasting this topic over there.

Mods are Moderators, administrators that look over the forum and remove/lock threads as they see fit.
