RDR2 sales down massively - only 1 million in 3 months

Recommended Posts

Isuck100%

Take Two had their earnings call today and announced that RDR2 has shipped 25 million units. The game had already shipped 23 million units as of the end of 2018, and they announced 24 million units through Q1 2019. That means it's only been selling 1 million units every 3 months, which seems crazy low to me. GTA V is still doing about 15 million per year!

I don't know jack about how video game sales trend, but a million is still not a paltry number.

Here's my thought--everyone who was going to buy it new has done so. There are probably a number of others who are waiting to buy used, to save some bucks. The blemish of RDR Online doesn't help either.

This. Being able to shift a million copies over a three month period over a half a year after launch is not bad going at all.

It just looks really bad when you compare it to an absolute monster like GTA.

Absolutely, for most games it would be great. But for a flagship Rockstar game, the “second biggest entertainment launch of all time”, it seems very low to me.

Here's the thing, like movies, video game sales don't typically have great legs, by that I mean they don't typically sell in large numbers months after launch. The vast majority of sales are usually in the first 2-3 months. The ones that buck that trend are the exceptions and are pretty rare but saying that this generation has seen that change a little with the rise of games as a service, there's games out right now that launched years ago that have seen monthly average user counts hit record highs years after the initial launch due to the on-going support for the game, GTAO is a very good example of this.

RDR2 has probably struggled in this area because RDO so far has been disappointing and lacks content and things to do. This may change with the summer update that is out soon, RDR2 sales might pick up a bit more over the rest of the year once that update drops. The PC launch will also help a lot as well, whenever that is.

Only one million!? I still find that successful. I mean, the fact that RDR is so successful is a credit to Rockstar's quality and advertisement, because I personally find it crazy that a dead genre such as the Western can be so popular today. Barely any other publisher wants to touch it for a reason, its a dead genre. And yet Rockstar have done wonders with it.

I'm not trying to shill for Rockstar here, I have my criticisms, but RDR2 is a massive success.

RDR2 had a massive launch, that is for sure but there is no denying that it's underperforming from a sales perspective ever since, especially for Rockstar's standards. I mean if I look at recent UK sales charts, RDR2 is already falling behind GTAV again, the game is even outside the top 10. The PC version will help but sadly, I don't see it selling more than 35 million copies a lifetime, when everything is said and done. RDO won't help either, it's just not that attractive of an online experience. They should have just kept RDR1's simple multiplayer for RDR2. The GTAO route just doesn't work with this specific setting.

RDR2 was never going to come close to the GTA sales as it just ain’t nowhere near as popular...

RDR2 has been a huge success for Rockstar and seeing the game being outsold in the UK charts by GTA V 9 months later does not really matter at all.

This game is a huge success. In 9 month RDR2 is already the third best selling game ever for Rockstar, tied with GTA IV, and I bet it will surpass SA sales by the end of the year.

You should also take into account that in 9 months RDR2 sold almost 23% of total GTA V sales in 6 years, which one was available in 5 platforms and not 2 as RDR2. It's a huge number for a franchise that isn't as mainstream as GTA.

In May 2014, GTAV sold 33 million copies, that's approximately 8 months after release on two platforms (PS4/XB1 versions weren't a thing at the time)

RDR2 sold 25 million copies in 9 months after release on two platforms.

It's still a success for T2/Rockstar as the game became the "second highest-grossing entertainment launch" title.

R* still have RDR2 PC to release in the holiday season which would surely boost their sales.

Also, Rockstar Games is one of the confirmed developers for Google Stadia service, a new platform to boost their sales.

While GTAV is a monster and generating lots of money for Rockstar/T2, RDR2 has a lot of potential for the future.

Roughly 463 copies an hour is not bad.

I don't think they need to worry about sales for this game at all😂

It's been a huge success.

Not surprising. The Red Dead series will never be as successful as GTA since the western genre is a bit of a niche.

Perfect time to release PC version so they reach 30 million sales by year's end.

Lol

99% of games released can only dream of underperforming as successfully as RDR2

reminds me of movie forums where people say something bombed because it only scraped past a billion dollars at the box office, or people who use some home-made maths to demonstrate why such-and-such will never get a sequel because it only make 2.5x its budget or something and then get surprised when a sequel is announced

That tends to happen when you leave your best asset to die and focus all your energy on a worthless pile of sh*t like Online.

RDR didn't sell as well as GTA IV so...don't know why you expected this to outsell GTA V...

The big question though is how much RDRII cost to make and advertise, especially if it took 8 years to make.
