RDR2 PC Specifications Speculation

What's the difference between DirectX11 and DirectX12 and what could it means for performance in the PC version of the game? There's also Vulkan but it seems like it's not used as much in games compare to DirectX.

DirectX 12 allows lower-level access to the hardware, usually benefits weaker CPU's as the bottleneck might not be as big. It also allows access to the latest DirectX tech like DXR (raytracing) among other stuff. DX12 if well optimised is usually faster and it's now the standard for most games.

So i guess that if you have a old-gen I5 or something even older, DX12 is a must if it's well optimized which i'm pretty sure would be the case for RDR2. That's actually nice (on paper at least).

Sure, try some of the recent games with decent DX12 support and without it, big open areas with a lot of draw calls will cripple strong i5's processors in DX11 mode and it will be much smoother in DX12 mode.

Let's just hope DX12 implementation is good in RDR2, big city will definitely benefit from DX12 support.

I don't think i own games with DX12 support and even if i do i'm not sure they are well implemented.

EDIT; I was correct, i don't own any games with DX12 support. Going to watch comparison videos.

I just concluded my upgrade to a Ryzen 5 3600, so I'm just waiting for RDR2 now. Huge generational upgrade coming from an i5 3570K, it's an exponential speed upgrade, my God  . All my GPU bottlenecks caused by the CPU are gone.

What GPU do you have? I'm planning to upgrade with a Ryzen 5 2600. Just going from DDR3 to DDR4 makes a huge difference.

I have an overclocked GTX 1060, it's still a pretty good performer at 1080p very high settings. Not necessarily 60 FPS in some modern games but still. At least I can upgrade to a much higher end GPU now down the line.

I own BF1 which has DX12 support and for many people, me included, wasn't that good. I think that now DX12 is better tho so I'm not worried that much.

Good job man! I hope I can find a job before RDR2 so that I can afford a good upgrade, currently I can buy just a GPU which would make a big bottleneck.
I'm planning on upgrading to an i7 8700K, 16GB DDR4 2933MHz and an RTX 2060.

The Division 2 with DX 12 - 45-60+ fps

The Division 2 with DX 11 - 28-40 fps

Specs: FX 6300 and a GTX 1060 6GB

DX12 is a boon for all CPU bottlenecked users.

New games definitely run well with DX12.

Newer technologies never works instantly, on the paper it sounds great but the first few months/years are always a mess especially when talking about a graphics API, devs need to fix it and then games devs need to master it to truly make it work the way it's intended to.

That made me laugh, it took them three months after the release of GTA IV to announce it on PC. It was a terrible port at release and still is on some configs. It's been 9 months, 3 weeks and 6 days since the release of RDR2 and we're yet to have an announcement while GTA IV on PC was announced and released 7 months and 4 days after the release on console. It was a bad version but at least the announcement didn't take that long to come.

Just make it run at 60fps at 1080p with a GTX 980/6700K and I am perfectly fine with it!

I cannot really upgrade my GPU if I want to boot on macOS as well 😭

About DX12, they might be already testing it for Xbox.

I do not know if releasing an engine update is a thing they do on console.

DX12 is already in the console versions but it's not used and i don't even think they'll even gain performance from it since they already have a customized API to improve performance

It’s kinda becoming ridiculous for them.

I think that this behavior is not professional, first of all the president ot Take Two (if I’m not wrong on the role) said that there would be no downside; second, people expect a PC version so say something!

Yep. It shows how much the company really cares for its fans when it is refusing to comment about the PC version at all.

I think we'll be very surprised when the official requirements will be out. Just like we were with GTAV.

I've upgraded my PC to support future games (2060 SUPER, Ryzen 3600, 16GB RAM). I'm hoping I won't need to upgrade for like 5 years.

I'd upgrade too but I don't really wanna spend all my savings. I want to buy good stuff that are good for at least 4/5 years.
