RDR2 PC Specifications Speculation

Recommended Posts

Spider-Vice

Based on how RDR2 runs and looks on the consoles, what do you think the specs for RDR2 PC will be? Will it have raytracing and all the fancy Nvidia (and futurely AMD?) bells and whistles, will it require a beast of a computer to run even at minimum specs?

Discuss away and post your speculated specs.

We know Grand Theft Auto 5 runs quite well on PC so we can only hope that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be the same. Ray tracing would be a nice feature to have.

I'm gonna say GTA V's Recommended will be RDR2's Minimum. GTX 660, older i5 and 8 gigs of RAM. Seems reasonable.

I can see 1080p 60 FPS being perfectly achievable with 1000 series cards. I know people game on much more than that these days though, so I can't speak to higher resolutions. I'm not convinced it'll be a huge performance hog, to be honest. It can't be worse than AC Odyssey. It literally can't be. Quote me on it in a couple months. :p

The R* dev at SIGGRAPH did say their new graphics stuff is pretty scalable so even if it looks lower resolution (light shafts, particles, etc) maybe the minimum specs could be lower than we think.

I think a 1060 or 1070 will be fine.

PS4 version is extremely well optimized, full native 1080p on what is essentially an old Radeon 7870.

So I expect Radeon 7870 / R9 270X,  Geforce GTX 950 Ti / GTX 1050 in minimum spec,

Either some older i5 or new quad core i3's in minimum / Ryzen 3 1200 8 gb RAM minimum.

As for recommend I expect Geforce GTX 970 / 1060,  Radeon RX 580

i5 7600 or Ryzen 5 1600X / 2600, 16 GB of RAM.

Would be great.

Got an i7 2600k and a GTX 970. GTA5 still runs decently on it when you turn VSync off, so RDR2 might be playable enough visually to be enjoyable :)

I'm just gonna say what I've observed this generation, 1080p 60 fps on GTX 970 is possible on every single game, either in the same or slightly higher settings than PS4 version of a game.

So I expect the same settings as PS4 in RDR2 at stable 60 fps in 1080p or perhaps slightly higher settings? Mainly shadows and textures. I love this GPU ;)

All I want is 1080p 30 fps on GTX 1050 Ti and Pentium G4560. Settings like PS4 would be great but I'll be satisfied even with lowest settings.

I used to rock a 1050ti that thing powered through a lot of games, not a bad card at all!

That GPU is stronger than PS4, I think PS4 settings at 1080p with locked 30 fps is a given.

My i5-4670k is almost at 100% use when playing GTA V and i get some stutter and low FPS especially in the city. I don't really think it'll hold up for RDR2.

I had the same issues on the i5 3570K, RDR2 is less CPU heavy except the big city. I think they will do a better job this time.

I’ve currently also got a i5 4670k oc’d at 4.4ghz, I do aim for an upgrade end of the year first half of next year for titles such as Cyberpunk 2077. As for gpu I’m still rockin a 1070 mini!

Well mine is not OC since i was having issues but i'm rocking a 1070 too, i should be fine for graphics but in terms of smoothness it's not sure. I wanna upgrade to Ryzen but i won't have enough money to buy the game if i do.

Make sure you're using anything but a 1600 MHz RAM, it makes a big differences in GTA V lows. 1866 is okay, 2133 is even better and your CPU is fine for the game. I've used to play on 4790k without any specific issues. SP in RDR 2 will be more than satisfying for you I think. If you have spare cash and want to postpone upgrade while keep playing V, sell your RAM and get faster chips.

I expect the game to be playable on 980 GTX/ 1060 with a mix of high and very high settings in 1080p. Genuinely thrilled to see how 1080 Ti will show itself in this game.

I have 235€ but if I were to buy a new CPU/motherboard and RAM sticks,I'll have 0€ to buy the game afterwards which is kinda stupid when you think about it because it's this game that causes me to upgrade.

Feel you. As I said, don't upgrade yet: try the performance first. Trading in your current RAM for a faster DDR3 may help you with GTA right now and the costs should be laughably low.

I think it will. The RDR2 timecycle files have these values....

<gi_bounding_box_center_x>
<gi_bounding_box_center_y>
<gi_bounding_box_center_z>

GI as you may know stands for global illumination. Stuff like ray tracing and path tracing are algorithms used in global illumination.

There's also this...

 <reflection_occlusion_ao_influence>
 <reflection_occlusion_num_samples>
 <reflection_occlusion_ray_length>

Let's hope they announce the PC version soon.

They are using raymarching for lighting and timecyc if you watch their SIGGRAPH presentation so it might not be for real-time tracing. Also, if I may ask, where is this progress being made for the RDR2 files?

Nice. Still doubting it's ever coming? Just ask @Spider-Vice (don't do a ban roulette tho).

They have separate lines for raymarching and stuff. Example below.

   <local_atmosphere_cloud_detail_noise_high_y>
   <local_atmosphere_cloud_voxel_density_reduction>
   <local_atmosphere_cloud_raymarch_added_precision>
   <local_atmosphere_cloud_raymarch_added_steplength>

Is there something else that can give away the fact that there's a PC version?

Unfortunately not. I've searched high and low through the files for clues. The gameconfig.xml only lists PS4 and Xbox One configuration overrides.

Good news is that all the files are in a similar format to GTAV so porting the game to PC shouldn't be too difficult for them.

Side-note: The internal name is "rdr3" and is referenced throughout multiple files.

            <DebugProjectName>rdr3</DebugProjectName>
            <DebugProjectPath>x:\rdr3\art\</DebugProjectPath>
            <DebugArtPath>x:\rdr3\art\</DebugArtPath>
            <DebugAssetsPath>x:\rdr3\assets\</DebugAssetsPath>
            <DebugCarRecordingsPath>x:\rdr3\assets\recordings\car</DebugCarRecordingsPath>
            <DebugScriptsPath>X:\rdr3\script\dev\_build\debug\</DebugScriptsPath>

That's sad. It'll be easier for previous GTA V modders too I guess. Well from a technical point of view it is RDR3.

DebugCarRecordingsPath? Might be for the NPC's wagon but it's strange to let it be called like that but then again, they know what is what and they have docs so...
