do you think cheats make the game better and they should be used?

i completed the game 2 two times and i want to play it with full of random cheats from the start to end this time, what do you think about this? do you think this is a good idea?

Game play should be normal.

The "Cheats" orignally were backdoors for game testers to reach levels, or try out equipment.

Then somebody found or released them to the public.

It seems rare now for a game to be released without the children first asking what are the cheats.

I think they should be held by the publisher, never released as come-on to buyers.

IF a player is going to Cheat, it should be AFTER first playing the game, as much as the ability of the player allows.

AND  there should be real penalties if cheats are used.

The pedestrian riot cheat activates the Madd Dogg glitch which makes that mission impossible to complete so try to avoid that.

Otherwise feel free to experiment with cheats and have fun.

  • “The missions Burning DesireLife's a BeachPhoto Opportunity, and Madd Doggcannot be completed if too many cheats have been used before the mission.” Copied from gta wiki. does this mean just before this missions or generally at some point before starting these missions

From GTA Wiki: "As earlier, the pedestrian hate and riot cheats are permanent and cannot be reversed if the game is saved while the cheat is active. These pedestrian-related cheats can hinder progress during missions."

I would avoid cheats that alter pedestrian behavior altogether but I think other cheats are fine.

@lil weasel real penalties? would i be committing crimes if i use cheats?

wat?  Com'on. Cheats are a part of gta which makes gameplay a lot more fun or more hazardous either way. It's only a crime in similar ways if your in a speedrun which is part of a restrict rule while doing one. But in your case no, not even close. Like I said cheats are a part of gta and SA's cheats were fun as hell and still are. Though as others mention already stay away from the riot cheat until you finish the game. And I would recommend disabling any cheats you have inputed just in case. I've always done this for as long as I could remember. The game disables most of the cheats you have inputed when you save (excluding riot mode, peds riot etc...) but I always did just to make sure.

sometimes i’m not able to switch the weapons. may cheats have caused this? i can’t even use parachute when jumping in the middle of air, even the game can’t switch it for me. only way to fix this is loading another file, if i save and load the saved file it still works. can someone help me with this? i play the remastered xbox version

Using pedestrian cheats and saving the game causes problems with these missions. This happens because once the cheat has been deactivated flags for the behavior of some of the actors do not reset. Such as Madd Dog. This is not intentional, it's simply developer oversight.

The rest of the cheats do not have any adverse effect on the game regardless of how many you used or how many times you have saved your game. As far as opinion goes, you play your video games however you want. It's no one's business what you do with your video games and no one is impressed that you beat a video game without cheats. People just like to give others a hard time around here.

"oversight" or developer Penalty for Cheating, Rockstar does not say.

It's oversight. Orion and others found the problem in the games code a while back. It's a flag reset issue with some of the non playable characters.

Cheats exist in the game code for a reason. The devs let them for us so we can have fun. I admit, my very first playthroughs of several GTA games were cheat-filled, but nowadays that's not the case and I usually play with cheats solely because I don't replay storylines anymore.

Cheats are there because probably developers used them for debug stuff quickly. Also, just for fun.

Ignore the purists, cheats are great. You've played through a couple of times, so why not? Have one cheat-filled save and another real one. Go for it. I do recommend you complete the game 100% first just so you have one full experience. Otherwise, nobody can dictate the real way to play because there's no such thing. What matters is you have fun.

To answer question though, cheats don't necessarily make the game better in a literal fashion. As stated, a couple of the cheats can be harmful to your save to the detriment of progress. However, that doesn't mean they aren't entertaining.

Back when I was a kid I'd use cheat codes to deal with missions that would be harder otherwise (invincibility, full ammo, etc.),but as i got older I got better at playing games,so I didn't need to do that anymore. Now I like to play through the story first, and when that's done, then I like to have fun with cheat codes.

To be on topic, indeed cheats makes the game funnier but can be dangerous as well. Since some cheats can't be deactivated. Also, I have a theory...

I think cheats were supposed to be NOT used by the enduser. And that's why rockstar didn't release the cheat combinations themselves in any gta game. Why? Because those are hardcoded and written backwards into the game executable. And you need to reverse it to obtain them obviously. So, indeed was some kind of tool to debug stuff quick as @gts. said.

It's a romantic idea that the cheats were put there for us to have fun but it's highly unlikely. Cheats like these never come from an official source, but when they're leaked there's bugger all they can do about it. I've seen some of the methods used to brute force ways into cheat combinations and it's very impressive. They're not just given away with the instruction manual, and that's why certain cheats were only found months following release. I do believe that the cheats for some vehicles weren't readily available alongside other more common codes like an instant $250,000.

Indeed. So much so, that between GTA III and SA they made cheats trickier to bruteforce, but I'm sure at some point they just did that to have some fun with the hackers. If Rockstar was really worried about hackers finding cheats and if they truly were intended only for debugging, they would remove them from the game. Nowadays they're neatly integrated into their games and revealed, or even unlocked (RDR).

I think it was random as they were being bruteforced. Only recently the true key combinations (on PC) for some cheats were found, i.e. they're not meant to be random letters but an actual phrase. But the random letters work due to programming magic. :D

I still wondered why the drive cars on water cheat was removed for the PC. It's always been exclusive to the original PS2 versions. Couldn't really make out the reason and driving miles into the ocean doesn't really do anything or have affect. Unless it's creating more gang territory throughout the map. Never tried this method on PC nor the original Xbox so I can't say it's exclusive to PS2 on that part.

The drive cars on water cheat was fixed on PC in the SilentPatch. It was possibly a mistake when converting the cheat strings, idk.

The cheat is on pc by default but rockstar forgot to add a cheat combination to activate/deactivate it. That's why is absent from the pc version.

@Big_Smiley that works for me on xbox 360 remastered version

On the remastered yes for whatever reason. I have three verions of it. Original PS2, OG Xbox and the 360 version. But I lost my original Xbox copy long ago somewhere in the closets or something, lol. I was referring to the original xbox release. But it looks like @Inadequate answered my question for the PC part.

The cheat codes are very useful and make the game funnier, if you have trouble finding a fast bike, if you're about to die &/or run out of ammo in a mission for example.

Yeah, that makes more sense.

For anybody interested, Vadim M made a video about some alternative versions of cheats which is a nice little dive behind the scenes.

Cheats can make you explore the game from other angles. They are especially fun to use for console players who don't have access to mods. Having loads of varied cheats is what I'm missing in IV/V as well. I mostly use them in free mode for fun though. Especially the pedestrian behavior cheats.

Back at the day I used cheats like a dick to complete missions (PS2), my hand muscles even memorized the most important, I would active them automatically. At some point though, I just stopped because it wasn't enough rewarding, yeah I completed III, VC, VCS and SA cheating but I wasn't feeling good at all. Then I played all again without using any and achieved the real experience of the game. Nowadays I don't remember any but I still use them for fun, but not in missions. Cheats shouldn't be used to make the game easier because it loses its appeal.
